CHAPTER3

Bianca lay quietly on her bed, deeply engrossed in her thoughts. The wedding was fast approaching in a few weeks, and she had yet to meet the man she would be spending the rest of her life with. “What’s he like?” she thought. “Would he like me? Oh! What if he doesn’t like me? What if he turns out to be a jerk?” she thought further. “Oh silly Bianca! Stop worrying! Would you?” She spoke out loudly. “Mom said he is breathtakingly handsome and rich; what more could a girl ask for?” She had never thought about what her future husband would look like; marriage had always been the least thing on her mind! But fate had other things in store for her. “I can do this. I must do this! It is the only way out; I can’t bear to see my parents in any pain or discomfort.” “Bianca! Bianca, honey!” Her mother called out, walking hastily into her room. “Hey Mom,” Bianca responded. “Over here.” She beckoned her mother to come over to the bed. Mrs. Williams was very excited and impatient to break the news to her daughter . “You look so happy, Mom; what's this about?” Bianca asked, smiling and earnestly hoping that her parents had figured another way out of this entire situation, or maybe Fredrick had written off the debt, she thought. After a few exciting giggles, Mrs. Williams finally spoke. “You, my beautiful daughter, will be meeting Liam Smith in two days. We need to make sure you look your best on that day. I have heard he’s an exciting young man. I am pretty sure you two will have a lot in common.” “Oh! Is that exciting news, Mom?” Bianca asked in a tone of disappointment. “Isn’t that good news?” Mrs. Williams asked with a straight face. “Bianca, are you still struggling to accept this?” her mom asked in a mild tone. “Baby, I thought we had already talked about this!” Mrs. Williams added. “Yes, I know we did, Mom, and trust me, I want to do this; for you, for us! But I can’t help but feel scared and anxious. “You shouldn’t; we are here for you, your father, and most especially, I promise to be with you all the way. We will never leave your side; we will always be here anytime you need us. Fredrick has promised your father that you are in perfectly safe hands, so there’s nothing to worry about, dear. I understand that you are anxious and scared; I was too,” she said, faking a smile. “No, Mom, it’s different for me. You and Dad were both in love; I don’t even know the man I am about to marry!” Bianca said so passionately. “I know that, child,” her mother said, reaching for her hands and holding Bianca’s hands firmly. She added, “You are our only hope right now, Bianca; please do not let us down…” Mrs. Williams said with eyes full of desperation. “I want you to see this as a duty to your family. Your father and I will forever be grateful to you for this immense sacrifice! I know it is hard, but you can do it. You are the sweetest and most selfless person I know. I know your husband will get to love you the second he sees these beautiful qualities in you. You do not have to worry! I know you will do anything for the ones you love—your family, for me. I know you wouldn’t want to see me suffer?” Mrs. Williams asked, this time with teary eyes. “No! Mom, I would never!” Bianca said, falling for her mother’s desperate act of supplication. “Then do this for me: stop worrying; nothing’s gonna go wrong, my dear. I’m with you on this, I promise. “What if he doesn’t like me, Mum? What if he already has a lover?” Bianca asked. “You shouldn’t worry about that, dear. He already agreed to the marriage long before now; that should be a good sign,” Mrs. Williams said, smiling and reaching out her hands to stroke through her daughter’s hair. “As I said, being married to the Smiths will be the best thing ever!” She added. “One day you will be by Liam’s side ruling the Smith empire. What a beautiful life!” she added again, smiling. “I do not want this beautiful life you talk about, Mum,” Bianca said, cutting her mother’s smile short. “Do you and Dad ever get to ask me what I want?” she asked. “This is what you want, Bianca!” Mrs. Williams said, slightly raising her voice. Everyone knows she barely raises her voice, just on rare occasions when she has had enough—occasions like this. Why can’t this child be reasonable? She thought silently to herself. “This marriage is what is right for you. Marriage to an extremely wealthy and influential family is what you want!” Mrs. Williams said calmly, softening her tone. “Do you know how many ladies would kill just to be in your shoes? The wife of the influential Liam Smith! This is an honor, my dear; we should be glad they chose us, and at a time like this too,” she added. “I wouldn’t want your father to discover that you are beginning to have a rethink. He would be livid with you!” she said, “Imagine the tons of business connections we’d have at our disposal. Your father will be back and better in business,” she added. “That will be if he doesn’t ruin our lives for his ego and selfish gains again,” Bianca said with a straight face. She silently and angrily cursed her father. Were it not for his greed and selfishness, she wouldn’t be in this situation right now. “Don’t talk about your father in such a manner; whatever he did was for your benefit,” her mother snapped. Bianca let out a witty laugh. “My sake!?” she asked. “How is risking and losing such a stupendous amount of money to bring down an opposing company for my sake?” she asked. “We both know he did this to boost his ego, and now I have to pay for his sins,” she said in a sad tone. In a bid to change the subject, Mrs. Williams said, “Your father asked that I see to it that you look your best on our visit to the Smiths. We mustn't leave anything to chance; you must catch the eyes of the young billionaire," she added, smiling. “Why must we visit? Shouldn't they be the ones to come over?” Her mother let out a weak laugh. “No, my dear, we do not have the resources to host such a wad of personalities. So we would have to do the visiting. "Time is upon us; we have to start preparations now!"
