Chapter Twenty-Five Stanley Unwin arrived for work and drew his car up to the front of the new security gates. The man on duty in the security box saluted upon recognising him, and from his position, Unwin could see the man hitting the “open” button to allow him access. Nothing happened. Unwin frowned and glared at the man, who held his hand up in response as if trying to figure out how to operate the controls. Unwin waited, his fingers rapidly drumming the steering wheel. A woman with a pram and a toddler on a harness approached Unwin’s car from the left, obviously wishing to pass. But with his car blocking the way, she had no option other than to wait, or attempt to walk around him, which would mean her taking her charges into the street.
