The next couple of days passed in strained silence, much to Kaeva’s amazement. They spoke only when necessary, and the words were terse. Kaeva buried himself in household tasks and his books. Eddie ate, showered, helped clean up, and spent most of his time on the porch or next to the water. He stayed in sight, though. Kaeva never even had to remind Eddie not to wander too far. In fact, quite the opposite happened: every time Kaeva woke up after nodding off in his chair, Eddie was there. Not close enough for Kaeva to yell, but near enough to make Kaeva uncomfortable. Once, while Kaeva had been cooking, he could have sworn Eddie brushed his shoulder.
