They sold me to settle a debt that was never mine.

My family threw me into the Velvet Eclipse. My fiancé didn't fight for me. I spent three weeks in that place being treated like something with a price tag.

I did not break.

Then Vincenzo Moretti walked in and bought me.

He is ruthless, untouchable, and completely closed off from anything that looks like feeling. He built an empire on top of old grief and he has never once let anyone close enough to threaten it.

Until me.

Now I am living inside his world, breaking his rules, and carrying a secret about my past that neither of us knows yet.

My ex wants me back. A dangerous rival thinks I am the key to his empire. And the family that sold me is coming.

He bought me thinking I was something he could contain.

He has no idea what I actually am.

chapter 1: shattered Illusion
I should have known something was wrong when Marcus stopped holding my hand. He used to reach for it under the table without thinking, warm fingers finding mine like it was muscle memory, like I was something he needed close. Tonight his hands stayed in his lap and he kept his eyes on the door and I told myself I was being paranoid. I told myself that a lot back then. The emerald dress had taken me forty minutes to pick out. He had called it my future queen look the last time I wore it, had kissed my knuckles and said forever like it was the easiest word in the world, and I had believed him. That was the thing about me back then. I believed people when they said forever because I had already lost one family before I was old enough to understand what losing meant, and the idea that it could happen twice never seriously occurred to me. It should have. Elena Harrington rose from the head of the table and the room went quiet the way rooms do when the person standing up is the kind of person who expects quiet. She had that effect, she always had, and I used to find it impressive, I used to find a lot of things about this family impressive. "Tonight," she said, "we welcome back what was always meant to be." The doors opened. The girl who walked in had Elena's cheekbones and Elena's posture and the specific kind of confidence that comes from knowing exactly where you belong. She looked like she had been built for this room and for this family. She looked like everything I had spent seventeen years trying to become. "Bianca," Elena said, and her voice was warmer than I had heard it in years. I sat very still. My brain was doing that thing it does when information arrives that it is not ready to process, sort of spinning in place, reaching for something solid to hold onto. Bianca. The biological daughter, the one who had been gone so long she had become more story than person, but why now, why tonight, why was Marcus still not looking at me. "Marcus." I kept my voice low. "What is going on." He did not answer, he was looking at Bianca with that small careful smile I used to think he saved only for me. Something cold moved through my chest. Elena sat back down. She picked up her wine glass, looked at it for a moment, then set it down with a soft deliberate click that somehow cut through every other sound in the room. "Elara," she said. "This arrangement no longer serves the family." I laughed, I actually laughed, because the alternative was to understand what she had just said and I was not ready to do that yet. "Sorry. What?" "The adoption was always conditional. You understood that." "I was five years old." She did not react to that. Not even a flicker, I had seen her face move through joy and grief and cold fury over the years and I had thought I knew every expression she was capable of. I had never seen this one before, this one was nothing, this one was the face she wore when she was looking at something that had already stopped mattering. "The paperwork is in order," she said. "You'll want to read it." Someone slid documents across the table toward me. I looked down at them because I did not know what else to do. Conditional adoption, asset clause, my own signature at the bottom, seventeen years old, signed at a ceremony I remembered as the happiest day of my life. I had not understood what I was signing, I had been holding Elena's hand and trying not to cry from happiness and I had signed whatever they put in front of me because I trusted them. I had trusted them. "Marcus." My voice came out smaller than I wanted it to. He was the last card I had and I knew it and I hated that I knew it. "Say something. Please." He finally looked at me. His eyes were tired in a way that told me this was not a surprise to him, that he had known, that he had sat next to me all evening with his hands in his lap and let me walk into this room in my emerald dress thinking tonight was a celebration. "Bianca is the right choice," he said. "For the family name." The thing about a betrayal that has been planned is that it lands differently than one that is accidental. There is a specific kind of pain that comes from realizing the people you loved were never confused about what they were doing. They just waited until the timing was right. I pushed back from the table. My legs were shaking but I made them hold me. "I want to hear you say it," I said to Elena. My voice surprised me, It was steadier than I felt. "Not the legal version. Not the arrangement. I want to hear you say what you are actually doing right now." For the first time that evening something moved across her face. Not guilt. Something colder than guilt. Acknowledgment, maybe. Recognition that I was still in the room. "We are settling a debt," she said. "You are how we are settling it." I heard the words and I understood them. My body understood them before my mind did, a wave of something physical moving through me, nausea or grief or both twisted together until I could not tell where one ended and the other started. Two security guards stepped forward. Men I had known since I was a child. I looked at their faces and found nothing there that I recognized. "Don't." I stepped back. "Don't touch me." They touched me anyway. I fought. I want to be clear about that. I did not go quietly. I knocked a wine glass off the table and watched red spread across the white cloth and I kept fighting until the effort of it became less about getting free and more about making sure they understood it had cost them something to do this to me. It still cost them nothing. They took my necklace in the hallway, my earrings on the stairs, my engagement ring at the front door, one of them just pulling it off my finger without ceremony, dropping it into his jacket pocket like it was a set of keys. The cold hit me at once. My dress was torn at the shoulder and my hands were empty. A black SUV was waiting. Of course it was. I did not beg again. I had begged inside and it had changed nothing and I was already learning, faster than I wanted to, that begging was something I was going to have to stop doing if I wanted to survive whatever came next. The door slammed shut while the car moved. I watched the Harrington house shrink through the back window until it was just lit windows in the dark and then nothing at all. The man in the front passenger seat glanced back at me in the mirror. Scar across his cheek, with bored eyes. "Welcome to the rest of your life, princess," he said. "Try not to break too quickly." I looked at my bare left hand in my lap. I was already thinking about what I was going to do to every single one of them when I got out of wherever they were taking me. I did not know yet how long that would take. I did not know yet who would be standing next to me when it happened. But I knew, sitting in the back of that car with a torn dress and nothing left to lose, that I was not going to break. Not for them. Not ever.
