CHAPTER 40 During the next three weeks, I lived alone in the apartment that Chris had vacated. He came by a few times, mostly while I was at work, and if I happened to be home, he didn’t talk much. He avoided my gaze, and his only topics concerned things that we had to divide and those that he couldn’t find. I was relieved when I found myself a new place. It wasn’t big but plenty for one person. It was a downstairs flat in a converted townhouse, and it was basically just a corridor with the rooms scattered along it.
