Chapter 15

CLAIRE Everyone there was happy to see me, I was passed around with hugs and kisses, while the affection was appreciated, but very unnecessary. Occupying the space next to one of the ladies, frowning slightly when her unfamiliar scent registered to my sense of smell. However the longer I look at her, the more her facial features click in my head. I recalled meeting her once, Fiona. The reason her scent smelled strange at first was because she’s a were-shifter. As if sensing her gaze on me, she turned and I looked away from her to focus on Caroline, settling down. While the conversation started, my thoughts drift back to my conversation with Camille and the meeting I was most interested in— the Alphas council meeting. Putting a pause on my thoughts when I noticed none of the ladies there were wearing any of their extravagant dresses. I blinked, suddenly aware of the eyes on me. “What do you say Lady Claire? A little party to celebrate your return.” Caroline asked, beaming at me. “As long as I don’t have to host it, the healer insists I stay on bedrest. It took a lot of effort to convince everyone back at home to let me come to this meeting, they insist I take Camille along.” I motioned toward her where she was standing a few feet away from us talking to Caroline’s sister. “You don’t need to worry about the planning, leave everything to me. You know how good I’m with these things.” Replied Caroline, laughing a little. The conversation shifted to another topic and I stood up to pour myself a drink from the lined up table where Esther and Camille stood, talking about something that involved Kale. I’m certain it has something to do with the reason why he has been running away from her. Caroline came up to me as I was pouring myself a glass of cold pineapple juice… I think. Pausing, I looked at her, giving her a questioning look. “You seemed very absent minded during the briefing earlier and I want you to know you can leave if you want to. Just having one of you show up today means a lot. We understand how difficult…” I cut her off by asking a question. “How did your mate die again?” Taken aback by my question, she blinked rapidly. “I believe you know how Sean died Lady Claire, you were around on that fateful day.” “I didn’t mean to bring up a painful memory, Lady Caroline so forgive me. Lately, I have been living in fear. I do not understand how everyone seems so calm about the fact that humans are now living among us now. This island was created for a reason, so we wouldn’t hurt them and vice versa but things are changing now.” “What do you mean? Did the council reveal their plans to you while you were held captive?” Her eyes widened a bit, causing her to dart a quick look around to make sure no one was listening to our conversation. “Unfortunately, I don’t recall what happened to me at the institute except that I can’t shake off the sense of fright I feel whenever I’m in close proximity with a human.” Someone gasped from behind us, turning around, we came face to face with Nadia. Another lady on the council, we’ve spoken a few times in the past and she just happened to be one of the people that wasn’t welcoming to Freya when she first arrived. “Are you implying there’s a possibility that the council are humans? I know it!” Nadia hissed, not bothering to lower her voice. “What? No!” I disagree. “You know it’s wrong to intrude on a private conversation, I never said the council are humans.” Camille rushed to my side, her expression was one of confusion. “I think we will take our leave now, the council is a very triggering topic for Claire.” Without waiting for me to say goodbye, she half dragged me out of there to our waiting car. “Claire, what has gotten into you?” She demanded, pinning me with a look that would make a weak minded creature such as humans confess. She’s a breeder, I wasn’t sure if she knew that yet. But the fierce determination, the protective way she had taken charge in there and shut everyone up, couldn’t be mistaken. She reminded me of Morgana so much at that moment. “What are you talking about?” I feign confusion. “Your resentment toward humans, at first I thought I was imagining it. Trisha thought something was off and she sent me here to keep an eye on you. Jet told us that the awful doctor who did all that experiment on you is a human and I understand why you would hate her but resent every human?” She shook her head, her tone filled with disapproval. “Saying Gianna is a doctor is putting in mildy, that b***h torture me! She messed with my head, put me through hell because she wanted me to shift. I want her and all the humans gone!” “What?” She sucked in a sharp breath. “You do remember! You remember everything that happened to you at the lab, have you been messing with us all these time? Claiming to be Flaire?” I rolled my eyes. “Will you let that go already? That might actually be the one thing I’m not lying about. I’m Flaire and it doesn’t change the fact that I’m Claire. So tell me, are you going to tell Trisha what you just discovered?” “I’m trying to understand you. You want Gianna, Heather and the council dead right? How does that include the humans in the Beta mansion? You realize they are victims of what you went through?” “Because the Beta mansion belongs to Hunter and I! For something one of them did, I don’t feel a connection to my wolf and I may never feel it. Do you know what I mean? So I’m sorry if I don’t want the humans in my space because everytime I see them, I’m reminded of what they took away from me.” Seeing the way understanding crossed her eyes, I almost smiled. With tears rolling down her face, Camille pulled me into her embrace. Hugging her in return, I wipe the single tear that rolled down my face. The ride back home was more merry, Camille tried helping me not to get into my head by telling me random things that had been happening in the pack that I was unaware of. However, on reaching home we were surprised to find Trisha outside the Beta mansion, consoling a human from losing her freaking mind. Before I could as what’s going on, several guards rushed out and informed her they couldn’t find anything. Most of the humans were now being rushed back in by the guards while one still remained clinging to Trisha. “Now what?” I inquired, my gaze fleeting back and forth between Camille and Trisha as she passed the woman to her. She pulled me aside, away from the house. “She insisted something startled her. Something that matches the same description the woman from earlier gave, do you think it’s something we should be worried about?” Glancing back at Camille to make sure she was watching us, I reached for her hands. “You were right to be worried about me. I realize I’m being harsh on humans because of the hell I was put through by the sick doctor who experimented on me.” I informed her. “Oh Claire…” she squeezed my hand. “No matter what it is, you can always talk to me okay? I will be here to listen.” Once the lady calmed down, Camille let her return inside and joined us. “I’m worried we might have another problem on our hands, Nadia started a rumour that the council are humans, misunderstanding what Claire meant. If the words get out, I don’t think any of them will be safe here.” “f**k!” Trisha cussed, pacing her fingers through her locs. “I feel so useless without my abilities. Claire, you are the next person in charge, what do you suggest we do?” “My suggestions are, you should focus on taking care of Nadia and making sure the news doesn’t spread. Camille will focus on hiring more staff so the refugees wouldn’t attempt any life threatening situation and I will focus on the Alphas meeting that’s coming up.” “That makes sense, I will go right away.” Trisha agreed before walking away. Satisfied with the task I have given them and knowing it’s going to distract them for some time, I went to the training room. Pulling out the same sword I injured Hunter with, I admire the sharp lengthy blade, loving the feel of it in my hands. Swiping the sharp edge of the sword along my palm, watching the cut widened along the stroke of the blade, I smiled with satisfaction. Before the sword left my skin, the wound started to close up, the healing taking place rapidly. I have never felt so strong in my entire life, no wonder the council wanted me to shift badly, someone knows the kind of wolf I am. Sophie must have told them I was the white wolf!
