Chapter 16

CLAIRE The following day, Trisha and Camille were occupied with the various issues that were assigned to them by me, which should keep them distracted until I get back from the Alphas meeting. Taking a few guards with me for security purposes, we left Rosewood Pack behind, heading deep into the forest. The meetings are hosted monthly in a private but very secured building you can only get into by a fancy card. Before they left, Hunter had given me the pass card, making it clear that without it, the security wouldn’t let me in. Another exciting part beside the meeting was my choice of outfit. A suit pants that screamed power, along with a matching jacket. As the car pulled into the garage with the others, I got down from the car and made the short walk to the front gate, where the pass will be used. We were searched by the security guards using a metal detector, things have really changed or perhaps Hunter hasn't told me things in a while. Before we got mated, we were close. I was his best friend, and he told me everything. Things changed between us after the first accident, we became strangers even though the mate bond was still there. It felt foreign, although I will admit it felt exciting to know him all over again. We were each other’s first, first love, first kiss and first everything. But things have changed now, I’m not the same person I used to be and Hunter deserves way better, knowing how broken he would be if he finds out I was only using the mate bond to keep myself stronger because rejecting him wasn’t an option. The soul mate bond doesn’t only represent a life long commitment but a life source. A bond that could be a source of weakness as well as power. If Hunter were to learn the truth, he would reject me, leaving me weak, vulnerable and exposed to my nemesis. If anyone is doing the rejecting, it will be me. Long after I bring the council down, drive the humans off our world, only then could I afford to be without a mate. I will leave Rosewood after everything is done, return to my birth pack to see if I could rebuild what’s left of it. Stepping into the conference room, I put a pause on my thoughts. Aware of every eye that flew in my direction at my entrance. I’m a Nova, second to a Luna, in a room full of Alphas and Lunas, no Beta in sight. I guess it's called an Alpha meeting for a reason. Usually the Alphas come with a plus one, back when he was unmated, Jet brought Hunter along. Most times, the meetings are more of social gatherings which is why they tend to bring their Lunas. Jet would prefer to go alone than to bring Morgana, he always thought her affection for him was weird. In a way, I blamed myself. If I hadn’t encouraged Jet to give a relationship with Morgana a chance perhaps she would still be alive. I disregarded the thought as soon as it occurred to me. A relationship between them was doomed to fail from the beginning. Jet is a lycan, while she was a breeder. Breeders are known to not be satisfied with one mate, meaning nature allows them to have multiple. Lycans are known to be territorial, now imagine one with control issues. It’s a pity that Morgana didn’t understand her own nature before she died. Pulling out an empty chair, I took my seat. “You… ” one of the Alphas started, addressing her. “I’m Nova Claire. Yes, I will be representing Rosewood, if that’s everyone, can we get started with the meeting?” I introduced myself, saving myself several minutes of answering unnecessary questions. “It’s a pleasure Nova Claire, I’m Drekonia, the Luna Alpha of Blue-Moon Pack.” A woman with silver hair, a firm looking smile on her face was introduced. I stared at her, a little stunned. She looked so unreal, her dark skin contrasting along with her hair, making it seemed even whiter. She also looked at me, not directly at me but my hair. “Usually if an Alpha isn’t able to make it, the Beta or Gamma shows up. Last I remember, Alpha Jet has them.” Another Alpha spoke. Matching his description from the document I have been studying for this meeting. It only took a few seconds for his identity to click, Alpha Jordan of Cresent-Moon Pack. Long blonde hair, blue eyes and a recent widower. A text book definition of a pretty boy, do people take him seriously with that face of his? Which explains why he goes out of his way to intimidate and exact dominance on someone he considers weak. “Sexiest much?” I scowled at him. “Alright both of you. It doesn’t matter who shows up, as long as she’s here to represent Rosewood.” Alpha Fitz of Black-Wolf Pack interjects into the conversation, taking his seat at the head of the table. “We are all here to discuss the matter of concerns we have about Rosewood's recent charitable endeavours. Why we have nothing against helping those in need, we cannot stay quiet when they appear to be getting out of hand.” “You mean the refugees?” I pointed out, giving him a look. “You can call them refugees instead of those fancy words. We have bigger things to worry about than humans. I believe you guys are aware of the fact that I was taken captive by the council?” They collectively nodded. “Alpha Jet has been taken before too, and we have others like that in Rosewood that were captured but they are only coming heavily for people they consider useful or threat. By the way Blood-Shadow Pack was destroyed recently, several other Packs have been destroyed and you are more worried about humans inhabiting your lands?” I scoffed. “It seems to me Nova Claire hasn’t picked up a history book in a while. Isn’t Rosewood known for having a private library of ancient books…” “Among other things.” I interrupted, causing Jordan’s face to harden in anger. “You seem to have forgotten, this island was created solely to keep us away from humans.” Alpha Jordan carried on like I didn’t interrupt him. “We are not concerned about the fact that they may start a rebellion or anything. We are concerned that they don’t attract more rogues to the pack because of how much of an easy prey they are.” “Alpha Jet action is obviously clouded by the fact that he has a human mate. Never mind the news saying she’s half werewolf now, how true is that?” Another Luna Alpha asked curiously. “I’m not here to disclose personal matters for anyone’s entertainment. And I certainly didn’t come all the way here to bicker about a bunch of weak minded mundanes. Heather and a scientist called Gianna are on the loose, I want every eye looking for them.” “You’re not in a position to give orders, Nova Claire.” Drekonia cuts in. “If Jet wants her help, he asks to personally request it or send his Beta on the authorised request.” “Jet authorised the request. He couldn’t be here today because he is tracking them to the same facility I was held captive to see if they could get any information on their whereabouts or course of action. A witch and a sick scientist are on the loose, I’d tighten patrol and be on the look out.” “If Jet Authorizes your request, I see why not. Next time, a written document would be appreciated.” Alpha Fitz added. The conversation shifted to other matters after that and I felt a rush of satisfaction. With every pack on the look out for them, it’s only a matter of time before they are found. As for the humans, Alpha Jordan just unknowingly gave me an idea what to do with them. Make them the perfect prey for rogues, if Jet comes to realize how unsafe they are at the Beta mansion, he will be forced to return them to their world. How do I go about making them the target? “Nova Claire…” I blinked out of my thoughts as Drekonia appeared beside me. She extended one of the champagne glasses she was holding toward me. A waiter stopped by to pour some champagne into our glasses before moving along. “Alpha Drekonia, it’s a pleasure meeting you once again.” “It’s rare to see a white wolf.” She remarked, motioning towards the white streak in my hair. At the surprised look on my face, she smiled. “While others can’t, a white wolf recognizes each other.” “I see… will you be open to a new friendship? I believe our kind should stick together. Especially with everyone else not taking the battle against the council seriously.” “Ha… Flaire,” Drekonia remarked. Her tone suggested she knows something I didn’t and the fact that she called me Flaire? When I myself don’t understand the reason why I want to be called that. Before I could ask her any questions, she was pulled away by Alpha Fitz, who wanted to discuss some lame Pack stuff with her. I stared at her, going over our brief conversation in my head when a wave of blonde flowing hair appeared in front of me. Just great! The very person I didn’t want to see. “Drekonia might not look it but she is very much into men.” Alpha Jordan remarked, following the trace of my eyes to Drekonia. “Zayden, her mate will have your head on a platter, he’s a jealous fellow.” I rolled my eyes. “And who made you a reporter?” He chucked then in a second, his expression turned serious. “I want her dead too, that mad scientist took something precious from me, and I want her to f*****g burn…!” “What are you saying?” I inquired, intrigued by the amount of venom in his voice. The passionate hate he has for Gianna mirrors mine. “I have a proposal you might be interested in…” now, that held my attention!
