Chapter 1
"The seventeen-year-old who was responsible for the assault and murder of Lindsey Rowlen has finally been granted bail of $250 000 after six months of him being detained. Last week he was transferred to XX Juvenile Correctional Center. His hearing is still unknown at the moment. The family-"
Ledger, Gina's father, turned the TV off.
"Kids these days." He sighed deeply before opening his phone.
His daughter walked in a few seconds later. "Dad!" She shouted as she entered her father's office.
"Yes, honey?" He put his phone down.
"I need a new phone." She spoke angrily with her arms crossed against her chest. She flicked her long baby pink hair away from her face.
"A new phone?" She nodded. "Why? I just bought you that one last month."
"He won't stop calling and texting again." Her father sighed.
"You've been changing phones every month for the past six months now. Don't you think it's enough? He will still get a hold of your phone number no matter how many times you change it."
"Then what am I supposed to do? He won't leave me alone. I'm sick and tired of him! Ugh!" She stormed out of the office and went to her room.
He immediately called again. She looked at her phone annoyed.
"Piece of sh*t Stephen" She had saved him like that.
She answered the call. "Leave me alone!" She then hung up before he could say anything, he immediately called again. She answered again. "Why don't you get it, it's over between us. It's been over for the past six months. Get over it."
"Listen here, Gina. I get that you were being emotional because of your period but I'm done being patient with you."
"The f*ck!"
"We never officially broke up so stop acting up. And stop changing your phone number every month, you know I will still find it."
"Leave me alone! I don't f*cking like you anymore! To be honest, I never liked you. You're only good for status."
"I'm to ignore that since you're being emotional again."
"Ugh! F*ck!" She threw the phone across the room. "AGH!" She shrieked from the top of her lungs. There was a sudden knock on her bedroom door. "What?!"
The door opened a little. It was the kitchen lady, Miss Ruth. "Miss, Henry has asked for you. He is waiting by the car." The old lady spoke softly with her head down.
"Fine. I get it." The old lady nodded before closing the door and leaving.
Gina wore her shoes, took her bag and left the room. She went downstairs and found the driver, Henry, waiting by the car. "Sorry for keeping you waiting. " She apologized with her arms crossed on her chest.
"It is okay, miss." He nodded with his head down.
She got in the van. He closed the door before going to the driver side. He got in then they droved away. Once they got to her school she climbed out of the car still pissed. She saw Stephen from the corner of her eye as he approached her.
"Why didn't you answer my calls last night?" He asked sounding pissed like usual.
"And why the f*ck would I, you're nothing to me."
He yanked her close to him. "I told you to stop bullshitting. What happened in the past is in the past. Live in the present, would ya."
She pushed him back. "You too. I f*cking hate you!" She went into the building. Her "friends" came to her once she reached her locker.
"Hey, girl." Sabrina greeted as she, Liz and Lexi pulled her into their embraces.
"Hi, guys."
"And what happened to you this early in the morning?" Liz asked. They could all tell that Gina was pissed.
"It's nothing. Don't worry about it." Gina took out the needed books before they left the corridor. They went to their first class. The other girls usually sit in the back while she sits alone in the middle of the class or at the front.
The rest of the day went by with just classes and getting annoyed by her ex, Stephen. Once she got home she ranted to her dad about Stephen and that she doesn't know if she can take it anymore.
"Seriously, dad! Can't you do anything about this? You are my father after all. You can't just let me suffer like this for SIX F*CKING MONTHS and not do anything."
"Sweety, you know it's not that easy. You know how his parents are. They are also as stubborn as him. They don't even want to know what their son is up to. I tried to talk to them and they just said kids will be kids and that I should let you two solve it on your own."
"Ugh! f**k! Why did I even date such a loser who can't get over a small breakup."
Her father faced his lawyer, Stewart, frustrated. "Um, if I may..." Stewart cautiously uttered. "How about using someone to scare him?"
Her father lifted his left eye brow. "What do you mean?" Both Gina and her father faced Stewart.
"If talking has failed you, miss, why not try to scare him away from you? It could help."
"Hmm..." Her father uttered while rubbing his goatee. He thought for a second. "That could work but it has to be someone really scary. Someone even rich and influential people like him get scared of."
"Exactly, sir."
"Okay but who?" She asked. There was a sudden knock on the office door. They all faced the door.
"Come in." The door slowly opened. Miss Ruth was standing at the door.
"Sorry to bother, sir. Dinner is ready." She spoke respectfully with her head kept low.
"Alright. We'll be down in a few." Hugh spoke with a gentle smile on his face. "Stewart, we'll chat tomorrow morning." The lawyer nodded before taking his stuff and leaving. "Let's go have dinner, darling." He pulled Gina under his arm as they left the office.
He smirked because he had a risky but great idea.
The next morning he called Steward over once Gina had left for school. "Alright," he started speaking as he went and sat on his office chair. "I've put some thought into your idea and I think I have the perfect solution to Gina's problem."
"Oh?" Stewart sat down on the couch.
"How about using a juvenile?"
"Um, what?"
"Yeah. The person has to be scary and most importantly, easy to control. We could use someone who wants to leave the center badly that they'd do anything."
"Hmm." Stewart thought for a moment. "That's not a bad idea. Risky, but not bad. The question is, who though?"
"That's for you to search for. I want someone who isn't just scary but also looks scary."
"Alright." Stewart opened his laptop and started browsing. He opened a few files and searched for juvenile delinquents that are around the age of seventeen and eighteen. "Oh. Sir, I think I have an idea of who to use." He shut his laptop.
"Who?"
"The kid that was taken to XX Juvenile Correctional Center last week."
"Why him?"
"Apparently, his case was never investigated and he might be a victim of corruption." Hugh raised his left eyebrow. "We could offer to prove his innocence in exchange for him pretending to be your daughter's boyfriend. He fits into the category we're looking for and his records show that he's obedient. He'll be very easy to control. And he's the same age as Gina"
"Alright. Let's give him a try. I take it you can get the paperwork done and get him out." Stewart nodded.
Ledger spontaneously decided to go visit him the same day to present the offer in person. It took an hour to get to the correctional center.
"1443, you have a visitor!" The guard yelled after hitting the bars with his baton.
1443 only looked at the guard surprised. The only people he knew were his father and grandma so having a visitor surprised him. He put his book down before getting up from his bed. His cellmates avoided eye contact as he left the cell. The guard put the handcuffs on him before letting him out and taking him to the visiting area.
1443 frowned after seeing an unfamiliar man waiting for him. "Hello." The man greeted him with a slight smile. 1443 looked at the guards and cameras confused before sitting down. "I see they treat you like real criminals here instead of kids that need rehabilitation." Hugh pointed at the handcuffs.
"Who are you?" 1443 asked as he sat comfortably in his chair.
"My name is Ledger Verlice."
"Ledger Verlice?"
"Yes. The Ledger Verlice."
"Why is the "great" Ledger Verlice paying me a visit?"
"You see, I saw that you're turning eighteen this year. Your trial date might come after you've turned eighteen so you will be trialed as an adult. Considering your crimes, you might never see the outside world ever again."
"And what's that got to do with you?" 1443 asked with an eyebrow raised.
"You see," Hugh rested his arms on the table. "I want you to do something for me."
"What's that?"
"I want you to pose as my daughter's boyfriend." 1443's brow raised.
"What?"
"You see, there's someone bothering my daughter and I want you to scare him off by acting as her boyfriend-"
"You're rich and powerful enough, why not threaten that person yourself?"
"If it were that simple, don't you think I would've done that already? Look, I'm offering to get you out of this place. Aren't you suppose to take the offer without hesitation?"
1443 thought for a moment. 'For this rich and powerful man to come to a prison and ask for help from a kid must mean his daughter is being bothered by someone who is equally as powerful or more than him. I'm not getting involved in this snobfest.'
"No thanks. I don't want to be involved in any of your "businesses", sir." 1443 lowered his brow to show that he had no interest in this offer.
Hugh smirked after hearing 1443 refuse his offer. "You didn't kill her, did you?" 1443's brow lifted once again. "I know very well that you had nothing to do with the death of that girl. Heck, you didn't even know her." 1443 face slowly showed annoyance. "I can easily prove it, you know."
"Why me? There are many kids here who've done way less than me."
"Well, they don't exactly fit into the category I'm looking for and you're just about perfect. Plus, it'll be easier getting you out of here because you're obviously a victim of corruption."
1443 thought hard again for a moment. "So what'll happen if I decided to take you up on that offer?"
"Well, I'll send some people to come get you once the paperwork is done. You will be taken to my house where you'll be living until your trial date so that I can keep an eye on you. You will attend the same school as my daughter and you'll act as her boyfriend while keeping her ex away from her."
1443 contemplated about whether or not to take the offer. He didn't really mind being here since it was peaceful and he had no problems since everyone kept to themselves. He decided to take the offer just for the fun of it.
"Alright." 1443 shrugged. "I'll do it."
Ledger smirked. "Alright. For now, sit tight while I set up everything." He got up. He fixed his blazer. "Alright then" Ledger left with a smirk on his face. 1443 got taken to his cell again. He was confused about what exactly he was supposed to so.
A few days passed since Ledger paid 1443 a visit. The paperwork was finally finished and 1443 could leave the center.
He found a van waiting for him in the parking lot. There were three men waiting outside the van. Once they got into the van he was made to sit in between two of the men while one drove. He sat quietly in between them with a smile on his face. The men grew anxious since they had expected him to try to escape or just cause trouble. Him being obedient made them uncomfortable.
After an hour of driving, they finally arrived at the mansion. He took in the house as he climbed out of the van. 'Hmm, not bad.' He thought to himself while observing how big and fancy the mansion was.
They took him to Ledger's office. They left right after.
"Welcome to your new home then, 1443." Ledger got out of his chair and went to stand in front of 1443. "I guess 1443 is not your tag anymore. From now on you will be called by your name, Niko Collymore, right?"
Niko squinted his eyes before nodding. "Ground rules. You are not allowed to leave the room that you'll be using without permission. You will never leave the premises of this house unattended under any circumstances. At school you will always be with Gina, my daughter, unless if you have different classes. Even then, she should always know where you are. Whatever she asks for, you do without question."
"Is that all?"
"At the moment, yes. There might be more along the way. I get you know the obvious ones."
"Alright." Niko shrugged.
"Miss Ruth will take you to your room." He nodded. He left the office and found Miss Ruth waiting for him right outside the office.
She put distance in between them because of fear. "I'll take you to your room." She spoke timidly before leaving, he followed behind her. Once he got into his room she ran back to the kitchen.
He examined the large room as he walked in. He went and checked the bathroom. "Alright." He then checked the closet, mostly school uniforms with a few other casual clothes and some of his own clothes. He then laid on the bed while facing the ceiling with a smile on his face. 'I could get used to this.'
A little later, Gina came back from school. Her father immediately briefed her about his plan to keep Stephen at bay. "No. Absolutely not. I do not accept this plan of yours."
"Come on, honey. It's currently the only thing we can do. Unless if you want to change schools during your senior year."
"Of course I don't. But bringing a r****t and murderer in the house? And you want him to pretend to be my boyfriend?!" She yelled angrily. "Have you finally gone insane, dad?"
"Look, the only person who can get him off your back is that kid. Obviously, a gangster won't work since he'll just hire more gangsters to scare him."
"No. I don't care. I'm not going to be around a f*cking criminal for who knows how long."
"I believe that he didn't do it. I'm positive he didn't do it."
"And what makes you believe that?"
"His case was never investigated. He was at the scene of the crime the moment the police arrived. He didn't even know the victim and he never gave a statement regarding any of this." Gina sighed as she raked her long pink hair back. "It'll be just a few months until I can prove his innocence."
"Why do you even need to do that?"
"Well, I did ask him to scare Stephen for you. Of course I'd have to do something for him in return." She frowned deeply. "If you want to go and meet him he's already in the spare room upstairs."
She stormed out of the office and marched to his room. She stormed in and found him laid on the bed. He propped himself up after she busted in. "Look, I'm going to be straight with you right now before it gets too late. I don't want you being comfortable around me. You'll only pretend to be my boyfriend at school and you'll do whatever I tell you. Don't you dare think about getting chummy with me and don't you f*cking think about touching me." With that, she left the room.
He only stared at the door surprised. 'Well... I guess that's the daughter. Gina, was it?'
