Chapter Two

1494 Words
Stacie’s POV Dandelions. I was in a field full of them , running around clad in a short peach floral dress. Someone was chasing after me, he had the most beautiful smile in the world on his face, his laughter was musical to the ears, he finally caught me and twirled me midair while I giggled, my heart lit with joy but suddenly, blood began to sip from my body to his and he dropped me. ‘Murderer!’ He yelled, pointing accusatory fingers at me and the field of dandelions suddenly turned into a morgue and I saw corpses all around me, frozen with horrific looks on their faces. I woke up with a scream covered with sweat. A strong arm pulled me into an embrace and for a moment, I melted in the warmth. “I see you’re awake Mrs Forbes.” Doctor Kyle's voice boomed, and this made me realize I was in Jason’s embrace. I pulled away from him in fright and he frowned slightly. “You’ve been unconscious for three days because you lost too much blood and you’re lucky Mr. Forbes brought you to the hospital in time.” Doctor Kyle added. I cleared my throat and laid back in bed. “How’s she doing now Doc?” Jason asked, worriedly and I fought the urge to roll my eyes. Jason always pretended to care about me publicly but when we’re alone? I drowned in the hell he plunged me into, this way, no one except of course the naods and Doctor Kyle who always treates my injuries would believe he’d ever hurt me nor will they take me seriously if I confessed to how badly he treats me, this is all part of my punishment. Before the Doctor could answer, he got a distress call and had to rush out. Jason roughly grabbed my arm, digging his nails in my flesh until it bled and I winced. “You think you’re sleek and wise? You’re not allowed to die until you fully atone for your parent’s sins, so cut the crap!” he spat viciously. A tear slid down my face, the details of that night fresh in my memory. Jason and I met seven years ago when Nancy dumped him, we fell in love and got married five years ago but three years later, my mother had a health crisis and as my Dad drove at high speed to the hospital, he accidentally hit Jason’s Mother, killing her instantly at the spot. Mom died of a heart attack as Dad was convicted of murder, he later took his own life in prison and for two years, Jason blamed me and made my life a living hell. “I’m sorry.” I muttered under my breath but he guffawed, his phone rang and he left. I was left alone, with my thoughts. The tragedy changed my life. I had also discovered then that I had last stage leukaemia and recently, the doctor said I had less than a year left to live. I kept this all a secret from Jason, I needed to be his emotional punching bag. Later that evening, I was discharged and instructed to get plenty of rest which was ironic knowing well that Jason would disregard it but there was more shocking news. “Congratulations, you’re three months pregnant.” Doctor Kyle had revealed. I watched Jason fake a smile but deep down things are about to get worse. “Did you plan to trap me with the baby? You’re one desperate bit*h aren’t you? Exactly what I expected from the daughter of murderers.” Jason cursed the moment we stepped out of the hospital. He was silent throughout the ride back home and he wouldn’t even look me in the eye. When I got back to my room, I crashed to the ground and cried, how was I to solve this issue? I cried myself to sleep and by evening when I was sure Jason had left home, to obviously be with Nancy whom he didn’t hesitate to flaunt and use to torment me, I snuck back to the hospital to see Doctor Kyle. “How long do I have left?” I asked him, deadpan serious. He sighed and showed me the results of the test I had secretly taken. “Six months at most.” My heart broke. “Will my baby live?” I asked shakily, my hand caressing my belly. “WIth the right medications and precautions, yes.” I heaved a sigh of relief. That night, as I laid in bed, I contemplated aborting the baby, i don’t want to bring a child into a world where the father despises the mother whose parents murdered his. Three and a half months ago, Jason came home drunk and forced himself on me, I was so preoccupied with preparing for my death that I didn't notice another life was growing inside of me, I fell asleep, indecisive. The next day, Jason came home, straight to my room, holding a plate of pancakes and orange juice; my favorite. “We’re expecting a baby, take care of yourself.” Jason instructed me with the kind of kindness I hadn't seen in years. For the next three months, Jason treated me with care, respect and so much love that I totally relaxed and thought everything was back to normal and that he had forgiven me. At first I was skeptical but as the days turned to weeks, I gave in but I soon realized my instincts were right. “Here’s your morning vitamin.” Jason said as he handed over some pills and a glass of water to me, I happily took them routinely but felt lightheaded afterwards and I was pretty dizzy. “I feel dizzy.” I told Jason but he wore an indifferent look. “I know, don't fight it.” He responded and as I reached out to touch him, I felt myself slip away and I fell asleep. The next time I opened my eyes, I was surrounded by doctors and in a hospital room. There was a high pitched ringing in my head and I looked down to see that I was clad in a hospital gown, beside me on a bed lay Nancy. “What's happening?” I asked no one in particular. Jason walked in, hands in pocket, a cold vibe emitting from him. “Nancy needs a kidney and you're the perfect match. Your kidney was healthy but in an optimal state now that the baby inside of you is developed so don't create a fuss and let her have it.” I opened my mouth and couldn't say a word, it was as if I was in a trance but the beeping of machines around indicated that this was reality. “The baby,” I breathed. “You'll kill the baby.” “Nancy needs this.” He insisted, looking towards her direction, I could see the love that was once in his eyes for me directed at her. I understood what was going on but at the moment, what I was worried about was not him but the last strand of hope that kept me alive for this long. “It's your baby as well! She's our daughter. “ I yelled at him, tears streaming down my face. He cast me a dirty look. “You think I'll have a child with the daughter of the person who murdered my mom? I can't even bear to look at your face, what makes you think I want to have a daughter with you, besides; Nancy is pregnant with my child.” Every word he said shattered my heart to pieces, I could feel my breath hitching, he walked over to Nancy and kissed her forehead, assuring her with words. “Everything will be fine, I promise.” I felt a cold liquid trickle in my vein and my vision began to fog up, it was anesthesia. I looked at Doctor Kyle, my last hope but his head was hung low. “Please, save my daughter.” I pleaded, my voice cracking. I could feel my consciousness slipping away, I wanted to hold on to it, to my flesh and blood but there was nothing anyone could do and I could only watch helplessly; myself being wheeled into the theatre. I grabbed Jason’s hand as if my life depended on it, clinging to what’s left of my consciousness. “Please don’t do this to our daughter, punish me for my sins,” I muttered, staring at him, at the him I love with everything inside of me. “She’s our daughter.” I reminded him, my speech slurring. As my consciousness slipped away from me, I clutched my stomach, tears falling from my face. Jason was resolved to go ahead with the plan. ‘I'm sorry my baby, mommy failed to protect you.”
