chapter One
Stacie’s POV I am the daughter of murderers. My life was perfect. I married a man who adored me until one rainy night; my father, while rushing my mother to the hospital, didn't see where he was driving and hit Katrina; Jason's mother. She died on the spot and my parents were convicted of murder, mom died too while my dad committed suicide in prison. Now, the man I love swears to make me pay for my parent's sin. Trust me, he wanted interest on the payment. “Are you done faking your illness?” Jason’s gruff voice cut through my thoughts and a pain shot from the back of my head as I attempted to sit up. “Jason.” I winced but he snickered instead and c****d his head sideways. “Do you realize that your little stunt almost cost me a multi-million dollar contract?” he threw, angrily. I forced myself to sit up and hissed quietly, ignoring the pain. It came back to me, how I went grocery shopping because Jason had told me he’d be having guests over for lunch that afternoon but I passed out in the mall. “Mr. Forbes.” A man called out and I instantly recognized him; he’s the Forbes’ family Doctor. “How’s she doing?” Jason asked, impatiently. “Mrs Forbes is out of the woods, she fainted due to stress and severe anemia, she should have some rest and take these medications, she’ll be fine in no time.” Doctor Kyle explained. I watched Jason’s face twist into an ugly frown and the Doctor took this as his cue to leave. “What do you think you’re doing? fainting in public? Are you trying to ruin my reputation publicly? Rest for a while and ensure lunch is prepared, my business associate would be here by lunchtime as planned.” Jason commanded as if none of the Doctor’s words were important and worth adhering to. “Okay.” I responded, my throat parched. He stared at me for a moment then walked away as if I disgusted him. I smiled sadly watching him leave and I collapsed back on the bed as I was too weak to stay seated. “I’ll go get the medications so you can take them.” Bertha, my maid and only friend I have informed me, I hadn't noticed she was standing there all along. “Hmm.” I muttered. Half an hour later, she returned with the meds and I took them, feeling drowsy, I dozed off and didn’t know for how long I slept but was awake by Bertha’s panicked voice. “Miss Stacie, it’s almost time for lunch, Master Jason will be back soon.” Despite my drowsiness, I immediately leapt to my feet and dashed towards the kitchen. Bertha trailed right behind, I glanced at the clock and saw that I had just two hours before Jason arrived and the dishes he ordered me to prepare would take about three hours. I immediately got to work and Bertha was the only one who helped me; the rest of the maids were prohibited from helping. I did everything as fast as I could, ignoring the dizziness that clouded my consciousness. Two and a half hours later, I could hear Jason’s voice in the dining room bragging about how his wife was the best cook in the world. “They’re here.” Bertha whispered, as if speaking up would get her killed. I nodded shakily and motioned for her to leave and like a routine, I put on a smile, got the apron off and went to the dining room. “Darling, you’re home.” I said, with a wide smile on my face. Jason stood up and hugged me briefly, placing a kiss on my cheeks. “If it isn’t my beautiful wife, I smell something delicious and my business associates must be eager to have a taste too.” He responded, placing a hand on my waist and grinning ear to ear. “Of course, the food's ready, it’ll be served in a minute.” I assured him then turned around to address the men, as if controlled. I walked back to the kitchen and dished out the food myself. “Why is Mrs Forbes doing all this menial work herself? There’s at least a dozen maids in the house.” One of the men pointed out. “I prefer to make my husband’s meal and serve them myself, that way, he feels every love I put into making it.” I lied and Jason seemed pleased at how I salvaged the situation. I excused myself to go to the kitchen, I felt weak but I didn’t dare to leave. An hour and half later, I could hear Jason bidding the men goodbye or something and I exhaled in relief, it was all over. I went to get the dirty plates and washed them. The men had praised my cooking and how Jason was taking care of me. If only they knew. I heard clanging of heels and turned around to see Nancy; Jason’s secretary whom the whole world knew is his first love who left him for a richer man years ago but is somehow now working for him, she had a smug look on her face. “Heard you made a very delicious lasagna, are there any leftovers?” She mockingly asked. I scoffed and ignored her. “Didn’t you hear her?” Jason’s voice rang and I secretly rolled my eyes. “There’s only some soup left, the lasagna is finished and the soup is still on the stove.” I replied, calmly, knowing how dramatic Jason can be. “Serve her some of the soup.” He commanded and without arguing, I did as I was told and as I gave it to her, she intentionally held it light and it poured on my hand, scalding me. I winced, crying out in pain. “Cut the crap and clean this mess, I don’t care if it takes you all the time in the world, make her some lasagna!” Jason barked at me. I slightly flinched and began to clean up, after all, I was used to things like this. Jason’s phone rang and he excused himself to receive the call, Nancy stepped on my hand as I picked up shards of the broken bowl cursing the shards to pierce my skin and as I began to bleed out, she reached for my hair and grabbed a handful of it and I could feel my vision blur. “Let go of me!” I cried out, I saw from the corner of my eye, Jason approached and suddenly she let go of me and threw herself to the floor and began sobbing. Jason was obviously displeased by this and rushed to help her. “She pushed me.” Nancy cried, pointing at me. I snickered, already exhausted but Jason fumed in anger and as I opened my mouth to speak, I felt my head spin, my legs turned to jelly and I collapsed to the ground, a high pitch ringing in my head and Jason towered over me, calling out my name. He scooped me in his arms, I heard a note of panic in his tone as I slowly began to lose my grip on consciousness, i had never seen him this scared, not ever since that night two years ago, the night that made the man i married, the Jason would die for me turn into a monster who would torture my every waking hour, overnight. As he ran, my blood left a trail and I closed my eyes, embracing the darkness.
