Meanwhile, Barbara pressed the call button for the doctor and asked, "Doctor, how is my baby?"
The doctor sighed and said, "You fell too hard. The baby is gone. Fortunately, you are still young and can still have more children."
This answer was actually within Barbara's expectation, but she still felt an emptiness in her heart.
It was her first child. Even though its birth was not anticipated by her father, it still had accompanied her for three months.
Barbara felt a heartache so intense she could hardly breathe. When the four members of the Gordon family arrived, they saw her clutching her chest in pain.
Ignoring her expression, Caitlin went to her first and grabbed Barbara's hand. "Barbara, why are you still here? It was just a fall. Do you need to rest for so long? Tell Jasper to remove the news, then get back here and cook for us! For your father's sake, I'll give you another chance!"
Barbara shook off her hand in disgust. "Andrew and I have broken up. I will not go back to the Gordon family. Find yourselves a nanny to do your chores."
Caitlin was about to grab her sleeve again, but the doctor stopped her. "Please behave yourself, ma'am. This is a hospital. This lady just had a miscarriage and needs to rest."
The faces of the three members of the Gordon family instantly turned pale.
"I'm sorry, Barbara, I didn't know you were pregnant. If I knew, I would never..." Andrew wanted to reach out and take Barbara's hand, but she coldly dodged it.
"Maybe it didn't want to be born into a family where it wasn't wanted by its own grandfather," Barbara said.
Andrew's lips trembled as he said, "Barbara, it's fine, We can still have children, as long as you take good care of yourself..."
"Andrew!" Daniela shouted, her voice trembling.
Andrew looked at Barbara, then at Daniela, feeling tormented.
"No need to struggle. We've already broken up. If you want to have children, have them with Miss Wilson." Barbara didn't even bother to look at him. Andrew had disappointed her enough times; she would not forgive him again.
"Barbara, I've seen all the effort you've put into the Gordon family all these years. Men make mistakes. Can you give Andrew another chance? Please, I'm begging you!" Kolton stepped in to mediate.
However, Caitlin couldn't stand to see Andrew and Kolton groveling to Barbara who used to be subservient to her.
"Barbara, I don't think you're anything good either. Jasper is always on your side. You two must have been hooking up for a while! I wonder if the child was Andrew's!"
Barbara, filled with anger, couldn't believe Caitlin could be so shameless. She endured the discomfort and slapped her across the face.
"You dare hit me!" Caitlin wailed. She was a shrew after all, and making a scene was her forte. Doctors, nurses, and patients passing by all looked over.
Andrew and Kolton found it utterly humiliating and dragged her away, shutting her up.
"Madam, slander is a serious offense punishable by law."
Jasper, accompanied by three subordinates, was wheeled into the room in a wheelchair.
Jasper smiled slightly, but his entire being exuded an air of authority that instantly silenced Caitlin, who was arrogant.
Kolton immediately put on a fawning smile. "Mr. Mcmillan, please excuse this scene. It's all a misunderstanding. I'll take my wife out right away."
Jasper didn't even spare him a glance. "All of you, leave. I have matters to discuss with Miss Hart."
Andrew was reluctant to leave but was dragged out by Jasper's subordinates. Before leaving, he kept looking back at Barbara, but she was too busy observing Jasper to notice his gaze.
Barbara studied Jasper. The man before her had a high nose bridge, deep-set eyes, and chiseled features. His calm gaze was unreadable, making it impossible for her to guess his thoughts. Despite being in a wheelchair, he gave off an aura of imposing height.
For some reason, even though Jasper seemed cold and aloof, Barbara felt like she had met him somewhere before as she felt a strange sense of familiarity.
"Mr. Mcmillan, may I ask if we've met before?"
Jasper chuckled softly, his gaze fixed on Barbara's eyes, which were filled with confusion. "This is our first meeting, Miss Hart."
Barbara became even more puzzled, but she quickly remembered the important matter at hand.
"Mr. Mcmillan, thank you so much for your help. I don't know how to repay you. But right now... I've just been through so much. I don't want to get married yet, and I'm not ready for a new relationship. If there's anything else I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask."
Jasper pursed his lips, seemingly amused by her reaction. "As a matter of fact, there is something you can help me with."
*****
Sitting in the low-key yet luxurious Rolls-Royce Ghost, Barbara felt a sense of unreality. Just moments ago, she was confronting the Gordon family, and now she was peacefully riding in a luxury car, driving along a winding mountain road.
After half an hour's drive, the car stopped in front of a simple yet elegant villa. The place was serene and tranquil, its mere sight calming Barbara's soul.
The front yard of the villa was planted with various fruits and vegetables. Perhaps the vegetable garden was taken into consideration during the construction, as it didn't seem out of place with the villa at all.
Jasper got out of the car, leaving his subordinates behind, and let Barbara wheel him into the front yard.
An old woman with gray hair was patiently picking flowers, the scene a picture of tranquility. She hadn't noticed the two of them approaching.
"Grandma, I'm home."
