The Land of Kalema
Kalema was an island surrounded by hundreds of miles of sea in every direction. It was a place filled with mythical creatures where even the plants that grew from the earth held magical properties.
There were faeries in the forests that made their homes within the trunks of trees and inside holes beneath the earth. They rode on the backs of hummingbirds and other winged creatures because contrary to popular belief they did not have wings. The faeries were the most magically inclined inhabitants of the land of Kalema. Different faeries had different natural powers, for where some could talk to the animals and convince them to do their bidding others could control the elements of earth, like the wind and the rain. Once they reached a certain age and maturity, around the time they hit puberty, the faeries could even bend other things around them to their will, like time or reality for short periods. Though most usually used this power to convince the trees to bend their branches closer to the ground so the fruit would be easier for them to reach or they would whisper to the sun to remain in the sky for an extra hour so they could continue to play with their friends before the night came and ushered them back into their homes. The faeries were jovial beings full of joy and a little mischief, playing tricks on each other and on the animals around them. Being the size of a small flower made it easy for them to hide and go unnoticed and they used this to their advantage in all of their games.
Night in the forest was very different than the day. Instead of playful faeries and timid wildlife, Shifters ruled the woods after sunset. Shifters were the most versatile creatures of the land, changing themselves to adapt to whatever need or want presented itself. During the cold of winter a shifter could make itself bigger to conserve heat in the snow and willing fur to grow along their backs, arms and legs making them resemble a bear. When it was especially hot a Shifter would walk into a body of water and grow gills along it's side and webbed hands and feet so it could cool off and swim beneath the surface of the water. When being threatened or cornered they could extend their teeth to razor sharp points and it's nails to long, sturdy claws to defend itself. When food was low a shifter could even shrink itself down to the size of its young to require less food to survive. Without any modifications though a shifter was uniquely beautiful. Every Shifters eyes were violet and no matter how they changed themselves they could never change the color of their eyes. Their natural skin color was every shade of brown ranging from the sandy brown of desert sand to a rich dark coffee brown. Their natural hair was tightly coiled like wool and their bodies were very muscular. The men were usually tall and the women were shorter though they were equally as strong, usually even stronger and faster than the men.
Past the forest not too far off where soil met sand there was a beach. The sand was sparkling gold and silver, like crushed jewelry, reflecting all surrounding light throughout the day and night, whether from the midday sun or the millions of stars in the sky at night. The waters of the sea shimmered a brilliant emerald shade of green and the water was as clear as glass. Beneath its waves you'd find fish whose scales shone brighter than any crystal or jewel you could ever find beneath the earth. Crustaceans as large as whales crawled across the floors of the ocean in dazzling shades of cobalt and amethyst. Tiny fish with bodies like seahorses and fins like dragonfly wings would leap from the water to the air and float for seconds, each letting out high pitched chirps in tandem with each other. They would fill the atmosphere with a beautifully random harmony, sprinkling the air with unplanned notes beautifully connected like the ringing of dozens of wind chimes suspended in air along the horizon.
There beneath the waves you would find the mermaids. Just like the fish in the sea the bodies of the mermaids were covered in scales of every color, and their skin ranged in shades of porcelain white to deep rich ebony. Their hair never grew past a few inches, never obscuring their eyes and its color almost always mirrored the bright colors of their scales. The mermaids had their own form of magic, they could control the water around them and all living things that lived in those waters. They were content in creating large waves to ride upon and calling small fish to them so they could eat, never taking more than they needed.
Overlooking the forest and standing high above the sea was a mountain. On it's highest peaks is where you would find the dragons. Unlike the creatures of the sea and of the forest the dragons were beautiful in a fierce and terrifying way. Their scales were not sparkling and colorful nor did they reflect the rays of the sun. Instead the blues, reds and greens that covered their massive bodies were dark and matte. The only thing that would shine were their claws, their teeth and their eyes. They could fly silently and snatch up their prey without making a single sound. Nothing could pierce their flesh besides the claws and teeth of other dragons and they lived longer than any other creatures on the island, being able to live for centuries. The dragons were the most intelligent of all the creatures of the land due to living so long and sharing information amongst each other with their form of telepathy, their wisdom was unmatched. They could understand any language from any creature and though they could not speak they could imprint emotions, thoughts and images onto any living thing around them at will.
Though many other creatures lived in Kalema these were the most powerful and abundant upon the land. For thousands upon thousands of years all different manner of magical creatures lived undisturbed and within the natural order of life on land and below the sea.
That is until mankind landed on the shores of Kalema.
