Chapter 56: Pride and Heartbreak

The car was silent as Damon drove me home, the only sounds were the hum of the engine and the faint ticking of the turn signal. Despite the muted atmosphere, the air between us felt suffocating, heavy with unspoken words.
I couldn’t bring myself to look at him. I stared out the window instead, trying to focus on the blurred lights of the city as they zipped past. My fingers clenched my ceremonial robes tightly on my lap, as if the fabric could shield me from the storm brewing inside my chest.
My wolf whimpered softly, torn and wounded from how the day had unfolded. From the moment Esmeralda’s sharp eyes had settled on me at the estate, I knew I was out of place in their world. And Damon... he hadn’t offered much to ease that feeling.
