Amelia Hart adjusted the straps of her worn backpack as she stood at the gates of Westbridge University. The morning air was cool, but her palms were sweaty. This was her final year. For most students, university was a place of freedom, friendship, and unforgettable memories. For Amelia, it was survival. As a scholarship student from a struggling family, she couldn't afford mistakes. Every grade mattered. Every class mattered. Every second mattered. "Focus," she whispered to herself. "Mr. King, your first class begins in twenty minutes," one of them reminded him. Lucas ignored him. Instead, he walked toward the main building. The crowd instantly parted for him. Like always. Amelia hurried through the hallway while checking her class schedule. She wasn't paying attention. Neither was Lucas. The collision happened in seconds. Bang! Books flew everywhere. Papers scattered across the floor. Amelia stumbled backward. "Oh no!" She immediately dropped to her knees and started gathering her notes. "I'm so sorry," she said quickly. The hallway fell silent. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved. Amelia looked up. And froze. Standing in front of her was Lucas King. The Lucas King. The most feared student on campus. His dark eyes narrowed. The students watching looked terrified for her. Everyone knew Lucas hated being touched. Amelia's heart nearly stopped. "I-I didn't see you," she stammered. Lucas stared at her for several seconds. "Well, Amelia Hart, try not to walk into people next time." The students gasped. Lucas King was actually talking to her. Amelia quickly gathered the rest of her books. "Sorry." Without waiting another second, she rushed away. Lucas watched her disappear around the corner. His best friend, Ethan, appeared beside him. "You let her go?" Lucas shrugged. "She's different." Ethan laughed. "Different?" Lucas looked toward the hallway where Amelia had vanished. For the first time in months, something had caught his attention. And he couldn't explain why. Later that afternoon, Amelia sat beneath a tree near the library, studying. She thought the strange encounter was over. She was wrong. A shadow appeared over her book. She looked up. Lucas King stood there. Again. Amelia's stomach dropped. "What do you want?" she asked carefully. Lucas smirked. "Interesting." "What is?" "You aren't pretending to like me." Amelia closed her textbook. "Maybe because I don't know you." For a second, Lucas looked surprised. Then he laughed. A real laugh. Something almost nobody on campus had ever heard. "You've got courage, Amelia Hart." "I've got studying to do." Lucas stared at her for a moment before turning away. "See you around." As he walked off, Amelia felt a strange chill.
