Inez McIntosh was abandoned as a child with her younger sister Esmeralda Levy by her mother at the age of nine while Esmeralda was only six years of age. They were raised by their grandmother Susan along with her miserable husband Harold who was only related to the girls by marriage.
Susan tried her best to raise her granddaughters with little to no help from Harold. She couldn't help being brutal to the girls at times. Reminding them how their b***h of a mother deserted them and how she didn't have the sense to get more information other than the names and the c**k sizes from either of their fathers.
Inez and Esmeralda wiped away their sorrows with songs of hope and salvation. The harmony from their melodic voices was enough to soothe the pain that overwhelmed their hearts. Inez convinced her little sister that they should join the church choir. "Essy you know we can do this," she protested. "Furthermore it will give me something to look forward to other than chores after school."
Esmeralda was very shy, always walking with her head down and was a girl of few words. Susan calls her a mute, because there were times when she wouldn't speak . Inez was always able to draw her sister back to reality with her favourite song,'When his wounded hands touched mine.'
Inez knew that the choir would help them escape the hell from home. From Harold...Her eighteenth birthday was only two days away and he promised her months ago to make her woman on that faithful day... something she wasn't prepared for..."Only God can help," she thought..She was praying that he would help her from this nightmare.
