Chapter 1: The Boy with the Books
If Ariana Hart had known she was beautiful, her life might have been very different.
But nobody ever told her.
Or perhaps they did, and she simply never listened.
Growing up, Ariana had always been more concerned about remembering library due dates than checking her reflection in a mirror. She tied her hair into messy ponytails, wore oversized sweaters whenever the weather allowed it, and spent most lunch breaks buried in a book.
To Ariana, she was just… Ariana.
Nothing special.
Nothing remarkable.
Just another student trying to survive school.
Unfortunately, the rest of the students disagreed.
“She’s pretty.”
“Have you seen her smile?”
“I heard Ethan from Chemistry likes her.”
“No, half the boys in school like her.”
Ariana remained blissfully unaware of every single conversation.
At seventeen, she had far more important things to worry about.
Like the chemistry test she was about to fail.
Or the history project due next week.
Or the fact that she had forgotten her lunch at home.
Again.
With a sigh, she pushed open the cafeteria doors and scanned the crowded room.
Every table seemed full.
Students laughed with their friends. Athletes occupied the corner near the windows. The debate team had somehow managed to spread across two tables.
Then she spotted a single empty seat.
Across from Ethan Reed.
Ariana brightened immediately.
Perfect.
Without hesitation, she walked over.
“Can I sit here?”
Ethan looked up so quickly he nearly dropped the pen in his hand.
“W-what?”
“The seat.”
Ariana pointed.
“Can I have it?”
For a second, Ethan simply stared.
Then he cleared his throat.
“Yeah. Of course.”
“Thanks.”
She dropped into the chair and unwrapped the granola bar she’d found at the bottom of her bag.
Lunch.
Ariana’s gaze landed on the thick textbook beside him.
“Studying during lunch again?”
Ethan glanced down.
“Just reviewing.”
“For a test that’s next week?”
He shrugged.
Ariana laughed softly.
“You make the rest of us look bad.”
The sound of her laughter did strange things to Ethan’s heartbeat.
Thankfully, she didn’t seem to notice.
She never noticed.
“You’re exaggerating.”
“I’m really not.”
She took a bite of her granola bar.
Then frowned.
“You know what’s tragic?”
“What?”
“This is my lunch.”
Ethan blinked.
“A granola bar?”
“Half a granola bar.”
She held up the remaining piece.
“I forgot my lunch.”
Again.
Ethan immediately looked away before she could notice the small smile threatening to appear.
Some things never changed.
Ariana forgetting things was practically a law of nature.
Without saying a word, he pushed his untouched apple across the table.
Ariana looked down.
Then up.
Then down again.
“What’s this?”
“An apple.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“I know it’s an apple.”
“Good.”
“I’m not taking your lunch.”
“You need food.”
“So do you.”
“I’ll survive.”
Ariana studied him for a moment before accepting the apple.
“Thank you.”
Something warm settled inside Ethan’s chest.
It was ridiculous.
Completely ridiculous.
It was an apple.
Yet hearing her thank him felt like winning an award.
The conversation drifted naturally after that.
Homework.
Teachers.
Upcoming exams.
The usual things.
Nothing important.
Nothing memorable.
At least not for Ariana.
Years later, she would forget almost everything about that lunch.
The apple.
The conversation.
The way sunlight had fallen across the cafeteria windows.
All of it.
But Ethan remembered.
He remembered every detail.
Because for him, sitting across from Ariana Hart never felt ordinary.
It felt like the best part of his day.
Across the cafeteria, one of Ariana’s friends appeared beside their table.
“There you are!”
Ariana looked up.
“Oh, hey.”
“We’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
Her friend glanced between her and Ethan before grinning.
“Are we interrupting something?”
Ariana looked genuinely confused.
“Like what?”
The grin widened.
Ethan suddenly became very interested in his textbook.
“Never mind.”
Ariana shrugged.
“Okay.”
Her friend laughed.
Some people really were impossible.
After another few minutes, Ariana stood and gathered her things.
“I should go before Mrs. Dawson decides attendance is optional.”
Ethan nodded.
“See you in Chemistry.”
“See you.”
Then she smiled.
The same smile she gave everyone.
The same smile Ethan had spent years trying not to overthink.
And just like that, she was gone.
Leaving behind an empty chair.
An unfinished conversation.
And a boy who watched her walk away far longer than he should have.
Outside the cafeteria windows, autumn leaves drifted across the school grounds.
For Ariana, romance had never been a priority. While other students worried about crushes, dates, and promposals, she focused on grades, books, and her plans for the future.
She didn’t realize that Ethan’s interest in her had started long ago.
And she certainly didn’t know that, over the next few years, that quiet interest would slowly grow into something much deeper.
But that story could wait.
For now, Ariana Hart had a chemistry class to get to.
And Ethan Reed had no idea he was already falling in love.
