The Runaway
Chapter 1
It was just another day. She woke up at five thirty like every morning and she went through her daily routine. Shower, brush her teeth and hair, dress and leave. She usually stopped to get breakfast on her way. She has an obsession with Caramel Frappes and bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits.
LeighAnn Savage raced down the stairs of the building she lived in. She was not an average person by any means. In fact, she was not considered a person at all. Werewolf. That was her classification, yet she didnt let the humans she lived around or worked with know that. She had gone to great lengths to hide who she was. She dyed her hair and eyebrows, and gotten non-prescription colored contacts to hide the color of her eyes. She even changed her grammar to fit in with the humans she dealt with on a daily basis.
LeighAnn was born into a Beta Family, and immediately stood out. Her hair was a deep silver with matching eyebrows. Her eyes were a bright purple, with specks of yellow, red, and black. She was short, only reaching a whopping 5'3" while the rest of her family was 5'7" and above. She was the only daughter to Alexis and Haygen Savage, and like most only daughters, she was extremely outspoken.
Her brothers were all born with brunette hair like their parents. Alexis and Haygen were mesmerized by the sight of LeighAnn when she was born, and they viewed her as a gift from the Moon Goddess. They treated her like glass from the time she was born until she was nine.
Staton, her oldest brother had suggested that she start training to defend herself. Her father was hesitant, but he finally agreed after numerous reasons given for her training. From that day on, she trained and went to school. She was pushed to her limits and given new heights to achieve. She trained everyday, until the day she left all of them behind. LeighAnn had become a rogue, but didnt wander aimlessly. She knew exactly where she was going. The human world. She had learned the history and all about the culture of the humans while in school. The wars, the tragedies, and the successes. Her curiosity was peaked.
*Flashback*
"Father, I want to be able to choose my own destiny. Why do you try to demand me to marry someone that I have never met and have no interest in meeting, let alone marrying?" She pleaded with her father and in tears. LeighAnn hardly ever cried anymore, her training had given her many situations where she learned not to cry, and she had almost mastered it. This time was not ones of those moments.
"LeighAnn this is best for our pack. Ever since we lost Alpha Jameson and his family I have been in charge. It has been hard, and we need an Alpha to lead, not a Beta. Marrying into the Eason family is the way to make sure our pack succeeds." He was angry and sad all at the same time. "Our Moon Goddess is in control, but at this point with true mates being so limited, you do not get a say when it comes to these decisions."
"I refuse. I am not an object you can just give away at your own whim. You cannot make me marry a complete stranger!" She yelled at him as she ran out of the living room, down the hallway and out the front door of the packhouse.
"LeighAnn!" Her mother yelled while coming out of the kitchen. LeighAnn slammed the door behind her.
She immediately shifted the moment she hit the ground. Clothes be damned. She knew what she had to do, and she was sad to do it. She was going to lose her closest friends, and beloved pack members. Her wolf whimpered in the back of her mind and LeighAnn took off. She was willing to do almost anything for her pack, but not this. She would not be stuck with someone who would most likely mistreat her, and make her regret marrying him every single day. LeighAnn just couldnt understand why her father wouldnt take his place as Alpha. It is the usual move when a pack loses their Alpha that the Beta who is the right hand man will move into his place, which also creates a new era of Alphas, but her father never would. This was very rare that an Alpha and their entire family would die, but unfortunately it did happen.
The pack had been attacked by rogues. The Alpha family had been on a picnic the day of the attack and Alpha Jameson was the main target. No one ever understood why, he had never done anything to any others that was unfair or unjust and his family became a liability. The rogues slaughtered all five of them when Alpha Jameson failed to defend them. The funeral was such a sad time for everyone, and LeighAnn was beyond upset. She had taken care of his twins and oldest daughter when Alpha Jameson and his Luna Emlei went out on dates. She loved those kids like they were her siblings and coming to the realization they were gone was almost more than she could bare. She had stayed away from everyone that whole summer. When it came time to go back to school, her parents pushed for her to do it, and she went along with it. She needed to see what friends she had left, and so she went to school everyday.
*Present*
LeighAnn pulled up into the parking lot and sat in her car. Thirty minutes early, like always. She had been working at this government facility for three years and she loved her job. She got to play with primates, and she had formed a few working friendships along the way. She sat in her car admiring the sun rise that had begun, and she thought back to where she was three years ago when she had left her pack. She smiled, she had come a long way, buying her car, getting her own apartment, and finally looking into possibly just dating here and there. It was a struggle when she first ventured into the human world. She had been on her own for a month and she hadnt been able to find a job or a place to stay and she was desperate. It seemed fate was on her side when she walked into the Center Cafe to seek out a job.
Sophia Kilburn was sitting in the far corner of the cafe when she spotted a young girl, dirty silver hair, torn clothes, and black circles around her eyes walk into the cafe. She felt sorry for the girl, and for some reason she felt a small pull towards the girl to help her. Sophia took her in, got her cleaned up, fed, and let her rest. A week after LeighAnn moved in with Sophia, there was a job opening and Sophia pushed LeighAnn to apply. LeighAnn thought the job was ironic, working with primates and being a werewolf, but she went to the interview anyways. Less than a week later, LeighAnn was being offered the job.
Sophia was so excited and filled with joy, and she celebrated with LeighAnn. Sophia was the assistant to the director of the government facility that her and LeighAnn would both be working at and she was extremely happy for LeighAnn. She just had one thing bothering her ever since she let her move in, and the night before LeighAnn started her job, she finally got the courage to ask her the one question that had been running in her mind since the day they met.
"LeighAnn, can I ask you to please explain the color of your eyes, and your hair?" Sophia was inquisitive, and she didnt look like she wanted to harm LeighAnn.
LeighAnn sighed, "Are you sure that you want to know everything? Its a really long story." Sophia nodded her head, and thats when LeighAnn sighed again and began with the day she was born.
