Chapter Four: A New Beginning The next day, Lucas woke up with a newfound determination. He knew he had to keep up appearances and find a job at a nearby restaurant. Disguised in shabby clothes, he ventured out into the vibrant city streets, hoping to secure employment without revealing his true identity. As Lucas entered the restaurant, he couldn't help but notice the judgmental stares from the staff and customers. Whispers floated through the air, accompanied by mocking chuckles. Pushing through the humiliation, Lucas approached the counter and asked to speak with the manager. The manager, Mr. Anderson, was a middle-aged man with a hardened expression, clearly unimpressed by Lucas's appearance. He looked down at him, his eyes filled with skepticism. "You think you're fit for this job?" Mr. Anderson asked, a hint of mockery in his voice. Lucas took a deep breath, fighting back the surge of emotions. "I understand that I may not look the part, sir, but I assure you, I am willing to learn and work hard." Mr. Anderson crossed his arms, observing Lucas intently. "Fine, I'll give you a chance," he grumbled, clearly unconvinced by Lucas's determination. "But remember, you'll be starting from the bottom, doing the most menial tasks." Lucas thanked Mr. Anderson for the opportunity, his heart filled with a mix of gratitude and apprehension. This was not the glamorous life he was accustomed to, but he was willing to do whatever it took to keep his true identity a secret. Over the course of the day, Lucas familiarize himself with the rules and regulations of the restaurant. He listened intently as seasoned staff members explained the rigorous procedures and high standards that were expected. Despite the demeaning tasks assigned to him, Lucas worked diligently, grateful for the chance to prove himself. As the hours ticked by, Lucas found himself caught in a flurry of activity. He couldn't help but notice the staff's constant whispers and covert glances in his direction. Curiosity piqued, he couldn't help but wonder what they were saying about him. With a brief moment of respite, Lucas approached a friendly-looking server named Oliver, hoping to glean some information. "Hey, Oliver. I noticed some of the staff whispering. Do you know what they're saying about me?" Olivier's eyes darted around, making sure no one was within earshot. She leaned in closer, her voice hushed. "Lucas, there's something you need to know," she whispered, her words dripping with urgency. "Mr. Anderson, the manager, he's not who he seems to be. Rumor has it that he's involved in some shady dealings." Lucas's eyes widened in surprise. He never imagined that the manager of this humble restaurant could have a hidden side. "What kind of shady dealings?" he asked, his curiosity piqued. Oliver hesitated, glancing over her shoulder before continuing. "I've overheard conversations between Mr. Anderson and some mysterious individuals. They talk about illegal activities, money laundering, and connections to dangerous people." Lucas's mind raced as he processed the information. He realized that his decision to work in this restaurant had inadvertently brought him face to face with a dangerous situation. Although he had no intention of getting involved in anything illicit, it seemed that fate had a different plan for him. Determined to learn more, Lucas asked Oliver if she knew any specific details about Mr. Anderson's operations. Oliver shook her head, her eyes filled with concern. "I wish I knew more, but they always speak in code. All I can say is that there are big plans in motion, plans that could harm innocent people." As the hours passed, Lucas's mind buzzed with thoughts of danger and conspiracy. He discreetly observed Mr. Anderson, noticing his interactions with certain customers, his guarded conversations, and occasional suspicious glances. It became clear that he was involved in something far more sinister than running a restaurant. Deep in thought, Lucas was startled when Mr. Anderson approached him, his stern expression replaced by an unnerving smile. "Lucas, I have a special assignment for you," he said, his voice dripping with false sweetness. "Tonight, there's a VIP event happening in our private dining room. You'll be serving a very important guest." Lucas's heart raced with a mix of excitement and fear. He had a sinking feeling that this VIP event was more than just a fancy dinner. Sensing the urgency, he agreed to the task, determined to gather more information while keeping up his yet unknown role as a restaurant employee. As the evening approached, the restaurant transformed. The private dining room was adorned with elegant decorations, creating an aura of exclusivity. Curiosity piqued, Lucas wondered who this VIP guest might be and what secrets would be unveiled. With a deep breath, Lucas stepped into the private dining room, carrying a tray of intricately arranged appetizers. The room was dimly lit, creating an atmosphere of mystery. Elegant guests filled the space, their laughter and hushed conversations adding an air of anticipation. Lucas's eyes scanned the room, searching for the VIP guest. And then, his heart skipped a beat. Sitting at the center table, their face partially concealed by the shadows, was none other than Brad Thompson. The main bully who constantly torments Lucas for his poverty and weakness. Brad Thompson was known for his dangerous lifestyle, tricky, and powerful presence. Lucas had seen him in headline news, always portrayed as a man of strength and assasination. His heart fluttered nervously as he realized he would be serving him, standing in close proximity to someone who held the key to uncovering the truth behind Mr. Anderson's illicit activities. As Lucas approached the table, he fought to maintain his composure. Thompson glanced up at him, his piercing gaze meeting him momentarily. Was it just a trick of the light, or did his eyes hold a flicker of recognition? It was impossible to tell. With a polite smile, Lucas began serving the appetizers, trying to stay attentive and unobtrusive at the same time. As the night progressed, Lucas couldn't help but sense a certain tension in the air. Whispers and furtive glances passed between Thompson and the other guests, almost as if they were engaged in a clandestine operation. Every word, every movement, spoke of something bigger than a simple dinner party. Suddenly, the room fell silent as Thompson rose from his seat. He looked around, his voice commanding everyone's attention. "Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement to make. Tonight, we gather not only for a celebration but also to expose the truth." Lucas's pulse quickened. What truth was Thompson referring to? And how did he know about the dark secrets that lurked within this restaurant? He listened intently as Thompson continued. "For too long, this establishment has been a front for illegal activities," Thompson declared, his gaze stern and unwavering. "But tonight, we bring an end to the lies and deceit. Lucas, please step forward." Stunned, Lucas froze in his place. How did he know his name? And why was he singling him out in front of everyone?
