The polished silver mirror in our estate no longer reflected my shadow; it had erased me long before I ever left.
When my husband, Eric, brought his deceased brother’s widow, Clara, and her child into our home, my existence dissolved. The protective devotion in his eyes shifted entirely to her. She sat at the head of the table, he held her child as his own, and their whispered late-night conversations echoed through the halls. I became a phantom in my own marriage, stripped of voice and value.
Then came the night of the dark masquerade.
While Eric gazed at Clara in open adoration, I stood pressed against the cold stone walls of the rear corridor, struggling to breathe. Out of the shadows emerged Vance—the brutal, ruthless Alpha of our rival pack. He pinned me against the masonry, his dark aura overwhelming my senses. His breath burned against my neck, his eyes black with unbridled desire. In the very place Eric chose not to look, Vance saw every fraction of my skin.
"They treat you like a ghost in your own home, little female," he purred, his voice rattling my soul. "He lets you break right in front of him."
That night, a dangerous boundary dissolved. In the shadow of my husband's neglect, I tasted the raw power, fierce passion, and lethal possessiveness of a rival King.
Yet destiny dealt a colder hand.
Our dark connection was shattered by political ambition. Pressured by the High Council to secure territory, Vance publicly announced his betrothal to a high-born Princess from a neighboring pack. To him, I was merely a temporary indulgence to satisfy his pride. The cold glance he threw my way while holding the Princess’s hand extinguished the last ember of my hope.
What Vance did not know was that I carried his secret child in my womb.
Without a word to Eric or Vance, I fled the fortress into a tempestuous, rain-drenched night. I shed my identity, my broken pride, and my past, vanishing into the most remote corners of the realm. Once dismissed as a weak, wolf-less female incapable of shifting, I forged my mind and hands into deadly weapons.
For three years, I hid. Through sleepless nights, bloody surgeries, and relentless study, I transformed myself into the realm’s most elite, legendary surgeon. No man would ever look down on me again.
Then today, the heavy oak doors of my medical clinic were nearly shattered off their hinges.
The blood-drenched body that collapsed inside was none other than Vance. A venomous claw mark tore open his chest, leaving him gasping for life. Having discovered that the realm's greatest surgeon was the woman he discarded, he had dragged himself to my doorstep.
When his eyes met mine, his shock collapsed into total helplessness. That arrogant, invincible Alpha fell to his knees on the cold clinic floor, covered in mud and gore.
"Please..." he raspingly whispered, blood bubbling at his lips. "Save me... show mercy."
Gazing down at the man who chose a princess over my worth, no pity stirred in my chest. Instead, a intoxicating thirst for retribution surged through my veins. The impulse to systematically undo him—just as he had undone me—coiled tightly around my mind.
Before I could make my choice, a deafening howl shook the very foundation of the clinic.
Eric had finally tracked my scent, driven by the humiliation of his lost property and ruined reputation. He roared outside with delayed, possessive rage, demanding my return.
Yet Eric failed to realize that above every Alpha in this realm stood a single, absolute sovereign: Kaelen, the Accursed Lycan King.
At midnight, the clinic doors swung open once more, parting under a wave of black mist and suffocating pressure. King Kaelen stepped into the room, his imposing form commanding absolute silence. With a single low growl, he forced Eric to his knees in the dirt outside. Then, with deliberate steps, he closed the distance between us.
Before the eyes of my former husband, my enemies, and the bleeding Vance on the floor, Kaelen pulled me firmly against his chest. His pitch-black gaze trailed over my skin, intense enough to burn through my garments.
"This female belongs to me now," Kaelen declared, his voice echoing across the territory like a royal decree. "She is my Luna."
He carried me away to his fortress, securing my wrists to his massive bed with cold silver chains. Expecting the violence usually promised to a defenseless victim, I steeled myself for the worst.
Yet as the accursed King leaned over me, I saw no cruelty in his golden eyes—only the raw agony of a tormented soul crying out against an ancient curse. As his touch scorched my skin, I realized the truth: the key to soothing the relentless, bloodthirsty torment in his mind lay hidden within my presence, and within my very blood.
Now, my former husband kneels outside the gates begging for audience, while the Alpha who discarded me lies helpless at my mercy. Meanwhile, I sit upon the throne of an obsessed, cursed King whose touch drives me mad.
Silver chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling of the massive bedroom cast flickering shadows against the stone walls. As the coldness of the silver chains on my wrists continued to bite into my skin, Kaelen’s heavy frame towered over me like a mountain. The storm in his golden-yellow eyes betrayed the screams of the relentless battle raging deep within his soul.
"What are you doing to me?" Kaelen whispered. His voice was muffled and wounded, like rocks grinding together. His massive, calloused hand slid down my temples to my neck. His thumb rested exactly where my jugular vein pulsed. From the outside, he was a monster who could strangle me at any moment; but the slight tremble in his touch shattered the sacrificial role my tribe had assigned to me.
"You don't pull back," he said, sparks of astonishment flashing in his eyes for the first time. "While the entire realm kneels before me, while the whispers in my mind drag me to the edge of madness... You look right into my eyes."
"Because I am not afraid of monsters," I whispered, not averting my gaze for a single second. "I grew up among monsters anyway. In that hell where my husband treated me like nothing, where my Alpha tossed me aside like an object, I tasted death a thousand times. Your chains feel light to me, King."
At my words, Kaelen's pupils dilated. A deep growl rising from his chest filled the room. As his heavy, passionate breath brushed against my lips, he buried his face in the crook of my neck. As he drew the scent of my healing, wolfless, yet pure blood into his lungs, I could feel the screams of that dark curse in his mind silencing. He was a cursed sovereign who ravaged the realm, but my presence was his only sanctuary in a sea of madness.
With a single swift motion, he grasped the locks of the silver cuffs on my wrists. The dark aura emanating from his fingertips broke the restraints effortlessly. The cold metal fell to the stone floor with a clatter. He took my freed hands and pressed them against his own broad, warm chest. His heart was beating wildly like a war drum.
"You chose to be my cage," he whispered, his lips searing my skin. "I will never let you leave this fortress. But these cuffs are not for you... You will rule this realm alongside me; you will be the only Queen who quiets my mind."
That night, the dark and intoxicating passion that lasted until dawn on the battlements of his fortress redrew the boundaries between us. This was no longer captivity; it was the beginning of a bloody alliance forged by two wounded monsters against the realm.
The following morning, the doors of the fortress's grand reception hall swung open with a resounding echo. Kaelen sat upon his throne like a living shadow. My place was right beside him, an elevated seat draped in black velvet and silver embroidery. The silver furs draped over me and the delicate crown resting upon my head gleamed like pure vengeance for the day I was abandoned as a wolfless female.
The first to be dragged through the doors by Kaelen's guards was Vance, who had been bleeding out in my clinic. The venomous wound on his chest still seeped blood beneath the bandages. Following close behind him was my former husband, Eric, his eyes darkened with fury and jealousy. When Eric saw me sitting on that throne, right beside the King, his knees buckled.
"This... This is impossible!" Eric shouted, his voice echoing through the hall. "She is my wife! A wolfless runt, a nobody! You cannot take her from me!"
Kaelen did not lift a single finger. He simply locked his gaze onto Eric. The air in the hall grew instantly dense, suffocatingly devoid of oxygen. Under the King's crushing aura, Eric collapsed to the floor coughing up blood, his chest pinned to the stone.
"Where do you find the audacity to claim what is mine, worm?" Kaelen stated, his voice rattling the bones of everyone in the room. "You made her a ghost in your own home. And now you kneel before me, a piece of filth who cannot even reach her shadow."
Then, my gaze shifted to Vance. The powerful Alpha who cast me out into the storm while pregnant three years ago, discarding me for a Princess... Now he was bleeding out before me, looking up with begging eyes.
"Surgeon..." Vance groaned, the word barely escaping his throat. "You... you can heal me. You are the best in the realm... Please."
I stepped down from my throne with measured strides. Aside from the rustle of my skirts against the stone floor, the hall was dead silent. I stood before Vance. Catching his chin with my fingers, I tilted his head up. That familiar arrogance in his eyes had entirely shattered.
"I can heal you, Vance," I said, the delicious frost in my tone sending a shiver through the entire court. "I am the only one who knows the antidote to that venom. But when you cast me aside for your Princess that night, you killed the mercy inside me as well."
I leaned in and whispered into his ear:
"I am not going to kill you. But for you to live, you will beg at the door of my clinic every single day, just like a dog begs its master. You will pay the price for every second my son and I suffered with every breath you take."
As a solitary tear slipped from Vance's eye, the murmurs rising from the hall swelled like an avalanche. Eric, meanwhile, trembled in pure terror in the corner.
Kaelen approached from behind, wrapping his massive arms around my waist and anchoring my back against his chest. As he rested his chin on my shoulder, his absolute gaze slid to the guards at the end of the hall.
"Throw the former husband into the dungeons," Kaelen commanded with freezing authority. "No shadow from my Luna's past is permitted to roam freely within this fortress."
While Kaelen's possessive touch burned against my waist, I looked at my reflection in the massive silver mirror. I was no longer a victim, a sacrificed female, or a ghost. I was a Queen who ruled the mind of a monster, holding the fate of two packs in her very hands.
This passion may have been a cage woven with golden bars, but as long as I held the key, that cage would become the ultimate hell for the entire realm.
