PART TWO 1. The best exhibit in a museum is a person. Especially if he’s asleep and dreaming about people who find him interesting. There are not many people who would find any of us interesting in ourselves, and an exhibit who’s awake is not going to be very successful. Sleep changes things. Why aren’t portraits done of people when they’re asleep? Scientists, builders, writers, leaders… Inspiration comes in sleep and while we’re awake. In sleep it is static, which is just what an artist needs. While we’re awake, it spills over with gestures and shouts, and with actions that aren’t thought through. When an artist sees this he has to restrain himself from swallowing his own brush, and we can understand him completely. Another thing altogether, for example, is a generalissimo’s dream. Now
