We go up onto the surface as a brigade and overhear a conversation: “How can we become a happy country? Should we lose the war, or what?” There, on the surface, they think their life is worse than ours! Today, for a change, they sent me to sweep the forest. There are many fallen leaves left from the winter, and they have to be swept away… On TV there is a report about an Australian business man Mr. McKidney. He supplies this little Russian town with artificial kidneys because there is a uranium mine here and all the workers’ kidneys are depleted.
