The university of the German town of Münsterstadt – which many called Musterstadt, or exemplary town – had an exemplary Biology Faculty, and in that faculty there was an exemplary professor, although his name was not Mustermann, as you might expect, but Ostermann. He was studying cases of atavism among humans, and was particularly interested in phenomena such as excessive facial and body hair, multiple nippled-ness and the presence of tails. At one time the professor had thought of adding “excessive sexuality” to his list, but then imagined all too vividly how many maniacs he would have to welcome and study, and that soon put paid to his idea.
