Chapter 1: The Dark Stone, The Heir Covenant
Serena
Tonight, Blackthorn will watch me place my hands on the sacred stone for the sixth time.
Six years of treatments, herbs that tasted like dirt, healers who lowered their voices when they thought I couldn't hear them. Six years of being told, without anyone quite saying it, that I might be the one thing wrong with this marriage.
I wake with a sharp twist low in my stomach and barely make it to the bathroom before I'm sick.
When it stops, I stay on my knees, one hand on the basin, the other pressed to my stomach.
*Not today. Please, not today of all days.*
I splash water on my face and look up. Same tired eyes, same pale skin.
*Except my cycle is late.*
Two weeks late. In six years, through every failed treatment, it has never once been late.
"You don't know anything yet," I tell my reflection. "Find out first."
Mira knocks a few minutes later, one look at my face and her smile disappears.
"What happened?"
I pull her inside and shut the door. "I need you to get me something."
"What kind of something?"
"A pregnancy test." I glance at the door. "A human one, you know I can't go to the healers. Not before tonight."
She doesn't ask why. She's back within the hour, a small paper bag under her coat, and squeezes my hand once before slipping back out.
I lock the bathroom door even though there's no one left to keep out and take the test.
Minutes pass and then there are two red lines, clear as anything. For several seconds, I simply stare.
"Two lines," I whisper, just to hear it out loud.
I press a hand flat to my stomach. The room seems to tilt around me as my knees give out, and I sit on the edge of the bathtub.
Two lines.
A smile breaks across my face before I can stop it. After six long years, I’m finally pregnant.
My first instinct is to find Kael, tell him before anything else happens today. I’m halfway to the door when I stop.
*Wait.*
He has spent six years defending me in front of men twice his age. Telling them he chose me, not whatever children I might someday give him.
"Tonight," I say quietly. "Let him walk into that courtyard and watch the stone light up in front of everyone who's ever doubted us."
I wrap the test in cloth and tuck it into the hidden pocket sewn against my ribs. It stays there all morning, small and solid, and it makes me a little less afraid.
...
Kael finds me an hour before the ceremony, adjusting his collar in the mirror. He catches my reflection watching him.
"You're shaking," he says, crossing the room, his hands settling on my shoulders.
"I'm fine."
"Serena." He tips my chin up. "Whatever happens tonight, nothing changes. I don't care what that stone does or doesn't do."
*Tell him. Tell him now.*
The horn sounds outside, low and long. The summons.
The moment slips away, I press my hand briefly to my ribs. *Let the stone say it first.*
...
The courtyard is already crowded when we arrive. Torches lining the path, elders in formal robes, half of Blackthorn's most influential families clustered near the front.
Lyra Arden is exactly where she always is, standing tall among the elder families, sharp eyes already tracking Kael.
She has never hidden what she thinks of me, or what she thinks Kael should have done years ago.
I look away.
*Not tonight. I won't let her ruin this one.*
Elder Corwin steps forward. "Six years ago, Alpha Kael took Serena Vaughn as his Luna." He pauses just long enough to make the silence uncomfortable. "Tonight marks the sixth year Blackthorn has waited for an heir."
My cheeks burn as a ripple of murmurs moves through the crowd.
"Six years is a long time for a pack to wait," he continues. "Some would say too long."
"That's enough." Kael's voice cuts across the courtyard, and Corwin's mouth snaps shut.
I walk to the sacred stone alone, the way tradition demands, and press both palms flat against its cold surface.
*Light. Just give them light, I'm pregnant, let them all see it.*
Nothing.
I pull my hands back, wait, try again. Still nothing.
"Serena." Mira's voice, low and urgent, right behind me. Her hand closes around my wrist. "Stop. Everyone's watching."
I hadn't realized I'd reached for the stone more than a third time.
The whispers start before I've fully lowered my hand. *Barren. Rejected. Useless.* Words I’ve spent years pretending I couldn’t hear now spoken openly through the crowd.
I press my free hand flat against my ribs, feeling the shape of the test through the fabric.
*Two lines. I saw two lines. Then why didn't the stone know?*
My mind races for an explanation, but every thought crashes into the same impossible question.
Elder Corwin's voice cuts through the murmuring. "Six consecutive failed ceremonies, by Blackthorn law, that activates the Heir Covenant."
The courtyard goes utterly silent.
"An Alpha without an heir after six years," he announces, "may be required to take a temporary Blood Consort for one hundred days, in order to secure the succession Blackthorn requires.”
My blood runs cold, “No, no.”
"No." Kael's voice is immediate, absolute. "I refuse the Covenant."
"With respect, Alpha—"
"There is no 'with respect' in this." He doesn't even look at the elder. "I said no."
"The law doesn't ask for your permission, Kael," Corwin says, quieter now, which somehow makes it worse. "It asks for your compliance."
Voices rise over one another. Weakened alliances. Nervous families. A leadership too exposed to survive a challenge. I stand frozen at the center of it, listening to my marriage get picked apart in front of the entire pack.
*He'll win. He always wins this argument.*
Then he goes quiet.
He turns toward me, and there's something in his face I've never seen there before. Regret, raw and unguarded, then gone the next instant.
*No. Kael, look at them. Don't let them do this.*
