From the hidden room, right behind the meeting place, I heard the horrors these men spoke. The walls were so thin, the doors too light failed to stop my ears from hearing these absurd things.
They were planning to murder me in cold blood—why? Because of some power balance?!
I wanted to go home, I wanted to go back to the beginning before it all started. The cafe I had been working at was better. The insults the wolves threw at me when I worked there was a joke to what was being said there.
"s**t, Jesus Christ," I muttered and paced back and forth. Sarah must have taken offense to this because she stirred slightly. Maybe it was because they served different gods from the humans.
"Can we go home?" I asked Sarah restlessly. Edgar Frost had promised me he would do something but it wasn't looking very good for me.
She watched me and smiled briefly. Even I could see that she didn't like the development, and I asked a difficult question.
"My lady, let's hope that something good comes out from this meeting," Sarah said instead.
Voices were raised outside the room and I stared within the spaces at the door. Edgar Frost had stepped between his sons, because they wanted to fight.
I strained to listen, because it was an interesting development since I got here.
"I stand with my son, Ethan on keeping the vessel—no, woman alive. She hasn't done anything wrong, she never chose for it to happen to her," Edgar spoke calmly.
"Father, we have to look at it outside a sentimental perspective. It is true that she hasn't done anything, but keeping something that possesses that kind of power puts us in massive danger," Nathan insisted. He turned at the table. "My fellow noble men, what if this vessel falls in the wrong hands? What if....what if the vessel has a change of heart?"
"That's a valid point." Alpha Rutherford pointed and nodded.
"Yeah!" There was noise as a rowdy argument followed from all members of the table.
"What if the Ravensclaw pack is trying to strengthen their ranks? What if they are trying to launch an offensive on other packs to gain more power and territory?" An Alpha from the lower pack had said.
"I can assure you that it is a little too late to try to forcefully seize territories from other packs," Edgar chuckled. He moved slightly to the left, away from the little line of vision the cracks provided and I started tilting my head to follow.
"If I wanted to claim your territories, I would have done that a long time ago! The alliance was very fragile then and I outnumbered everyone here. But I suggested the alliance to ensure peace within our packs, so you are very much wrong?" Edgar appeared in my field of vision. He leaned over the Alpha that had talked. "Do you even think that I can't raid your pack, even with that power?"
The alpha was silent and said nothing else. "Forgive me, it was a slip of the tongue." The Ravensclaw name was that big.
He stepped back again and pointed straight at the door I peaked from. "If you still doubt me, why don't you take a look at the vessel? Why don't you see how harmless this young woman is?"
"My lady, it's time to move out," Sarah was at my side and leading me outside. She removed the veil I wore, so that my face was out for everyone to see.
The door flew open and I walked into unfamiliar territory. I kept my face down, I was too nervous. The table was completely silent. I could sense the spectators watching silently, like a tiger stalking its prey in the jungle.
"Hold your head up," Sarah whispered. She laid a hand on my shoulder.
I raised my head up, and my heart shot up. There were different emotions written on the faces of the council members along the table. There was visible hate, because they sensed I wasn't like them, some looked terrified, like I was the most hideous creature while some looked at me with interest. I think my palm became really sweaty.
"It's just a young girl," someone echoed above. That seemed to start a lowered murmur among the people.
I stopped just close enough to Edgar. Ethan glanced at me once and took a step closer.
"You see for yourself? Why should I be willing to kill a young woman to satisfy ourselves?" He turned to Nathan. "You say I shouldn't be sentimental, is that how shallow you have become?"
"Father, I'm the chairman here, I'm doing it for the good of our pack—"
"By killing an innocent girl?" Ethan jumped in. "I think you are really selfish, especially when you don't have proof of her going rogue in the future." He looked at me and nodded. For a moment, I felt calm.
"Argh! That's it! We will conduct a vote!" Nathan was adamant. He walked around the table. "Don't let them sweet talk you! She's a threat to our own very existence!"
That startled me. The table seemed quiet divided on the matter.
"That won't be necessary, because I'm ready to stand on my decision no matter the outcome. Taking a vote is useless," Ethan said. "Rachael's life wouldn't be bargained on this table like some livestock. Take a vote? That's very low."
"Fine!" Alpha Rutherford slammed his fat hand on the table. "I stand by Alpha Edgar and Ethan with the decision."
"Surely you can't be doing this—"
"Yes I am, I will take him for his word. I've known this man for a long time, and he is never wrong. I will only accept this if you can promise that she won't be a threat to us, that you can keep her well away from evil hands, Ethan," he demanded.
Ethan raised his head up. "Yes, I will. That's why I took her in, right?"
The Alpha nodded and turned back to the table. "I think that should be enough."
My heart returned to its righteous place in my chest and I gave a sigh of relief.
Edgar leaned closer to me and Sarah. "Go back to the room, we will be finishing things here." He whispered.
Sarah held my hand and led me back, while the men continued their discussion at the table. I went in first and placed my hands on my knees. My maid locked the door behind me and I raised my head up.
"Sarah, that was crazy—"
A man I remember seeing somewhere waited in the room. I became very uncomfortable the moment I saw him. The ominous aura that oozed from his body told me he wasn't my friend.
Wearing an expensive suit with intense geled hair, he spoke to me. "Hello, Rachael Quincy. I'm Sirius Jaeger."
