"Stay back! My lady behind me!" Sarah screamed. She stood in front of me, covering me with her little body. She rattled the doorknobs we had just used but the door wouldn't open.
The name sent shivers down my spine, even though I barely knew him. He was the one that Ethan was worried about before, I remembered seeing him arrive at the mansion earlier. Now I know why.
I looked around. There was no window, except from the front door but this man had managed to make it inside.
"Oh come on, can't you just act natural around me? It's not like I'm going to kill you."
"What do you want? How do you know my surname?" I demanded. Sarah's arms were shaking, she had lost all her coolness.
"Oh, I—"
Sarah yelled. "Enough! My lady, don't speak to him—"
Something extraordinary happened before my eyes. For a second, Sirius seemed to have vanished in plain sight. He was beside me but closer to Sarah and there was a swift movement with his arm. I do not know what he did, but Sarah fell to the ground like a wood log. She was out cold.
"Can't afford to get the attention of everyone," Sirius said as he wore his gloves.
What the hell happened?
I stepped back, my legs were against the wall. "I'm going to scream," I threatened. "If you come closer, I'm going to scream—"
"No, you would not," he cut me off. There was a sick grin on his face. I realized what he meant by that. He was closer to Sarah than I was.
In other words, the time it took me to scream, he would do something really bad to Sarah. I didn't want to find out what it was. I might have thought he was bluffing, but the fear of causing someone's death got the better of me.
"You don't have to do this," I said to him. "Please, she's just a maid."
"And you don't have to leave here too, because she's just a maid," he teased me. He was amused as he observed me. I noticed he wore an eye patch over his right eye. "Come on, she's just a maid. What difference will it make? You barely even know her. Just make a run for it and save your life, because she might just be good as dead," he laughed.
I was terrified by his words. My joints felt like rusted steel bearings. My heart had never beat like that before, until today. How could he possibly joke about killing Sarah here?
"Why—why have I become something of interest to you?" I stuttered. My throat felt tight, it was a hassle talking in these conditions.
"Isn't it obvious? You have the power of the Moon Goddess! Of course, I will be naturally interested in you!" He moved closer to me and touched my hair. "Hmmm, it's true..."
I jumped back and grasped my arm. Goosebumps appeared where he had touched me. It wasn't a normal reaction from my body but rather forced. The last thing I wanted was a strange wizard touching me like an exhibit since he had been behaving like one.
"I see, you are quite the rebellious one eh? No wonder Ethan doesn't want to let you go," he smiled at me.
"You know Ethan?" Anything to stall. Maybe the others outside would come and check on me.
"Who doesn't know Ethan? " He scoffed. "Even the damned human children know who Ethan is, everyone knows Ethan."
I had to keep him talking; I couldn't let him do whatever he wanted to do to me now that Sarah was down.
"Ah, so you have been hidden for a long time? It seems your power has been quite dormant for a long time," Sirius droned.
Honestly, he knew too much about me.
"I'm guessing more white strands will appear on your hair as your power gets stronger." He stared at my hair.
Was he one of the people that Edgar had said were after me? Why wasn't he killing me then?
"Still, I can't believe that the power went to someone like you." He brought a finger to his lips and watched amusingly. "I mean, I did everything possible. I thought it could come out somewhere close to me but it went too far. And now that I'm close, it's not fully developed. The irony of everything." He glanced at his watch. "It's like the Goddess is playing games with me."
He straightened his suit. "I have real big plans for you. Everyone has high expectations, I just hope you are up to hand for it. I hope you aren't a disappointment and that your development is positive."
"I really don't know what you are talking about," I said. It was like he had been monologuing in his head, but I could hear it. "But please, don't harm Sarah and I."
Sirius just waved his hand, completely ignoring us. "I seem to be running out of time," he sighed. "Did I say you look quite familiar, like a woman from my past? Well, your parents are dead, so it can't possibly be her, right?"
I was interested in him mentioning my parents, but I wanted to leave quickly because I thought Sarah wasn't breathing again.
"Until we meet again, goodbye!" He snapped his finger and a white light enveloped us. When the light died down, he was long gone and it was only me and Sarah inside.
I went on my knees and shook Sarah. "Please get up Sarah! He's gone, get up!"
The door flew open and Ethan appeared. "What happened?" His eyes travelled down to Sarah and me on the floor. "What the hell happened?!"
I moved away as he checked Sarah's vitals. "A man appeared here—" I spoke.
"She's going to be fine, she's just knocked out cold."
"—A man named Sirius Jaeger...he just appeared and disappeared into thin air like a magician, what's going on, Ethan? You never told me there were magicians in this side of the world!." I yelled at him.
"Sirius Jaeger?" Ethan straightened up. "Are you sure of it?"
"That's what he said! That's what he said—"
Ethan left Sarah and grabbed my arm. "Are you hurt? Did he do anything to you?" He ran his around my shoulders, which should have annoyed me but I accepted it. Strangely.
"No, I'm fine, why do you care, Mr betrothed?" I was still salty.
"It's Sirius Jaeger we are talking about! We can never be careful with him!" He held my face. "Now, are you hurt?" He Was genuinely concerned.
"What's going on here?" Naomi Rutherford stood at the door.
