12 Joe “I will need to verify this sir. It might take a few minutes.” The bank teller’s eyes opened wide when I handed her the check, but then her professionalism kicked in. “Would you mind taking a seat in the lobby? I’ll come get you once I’m finished.” The lobby was empty, except for security guards and employees. I settled into a chair, grabbing a magazine off the table in front of me, which I promptly ignored. It was a distraction to keep my hands busy, because ever since I woke up this morning I’d been consumed with the suspicion that my mother had played a trick on me. She had cancelled the check, or hell, used a fake one for all I knew.
