CHAPTER 1 ~ Forced to Marry
"What do you mean, Dad?"
Ellina Zamora was stunned to look at Daniel Silverman, her father. The anger that seemed suppressed was clearly visible on the glint of her innocent face. She really still didn't understand what was on her father's mind right now. Did the middle-aged man not understand how he felt?
"I don't want to marry Reynand, Dad! This is too ridiculous for me!" For the umpteenth time, Ellina refused her father's request.
Of course Ellina refused. Everyone definitely wants to marry someone they love, without any pressure from anyone. However, what happened to her? It's really unexpected.
"But what about the wedding? Are you willing to see your parents suffer the shame, huh?" said Daniel, not accepting his youngest daughter's rejection.
"It's my sister's fault, not me! Why do I have to bear all this?" Ellina protested with teary eyes. "Why don't you ever think about my feelings? Am I not your child too, huh?" She added irritably.
Any woman certainly doesn't want to be sacrificed for other people's mistakes. It's really unfair if she is the one who has to be responsible for the mistakes of Zyana, her biological sister.
"Agree or not, you still have to marry Reynand!"
"But, Dad—"
"I don't want to hear rejection from you, Ellina. Your sister has gone somewhere, while the wedding will take place in two days. The only way for the wedding to go ahead as planned is for you to take Zyana's place!" Daniel concluded at length.
There was obvious anxiety on the middle-aged man's face. He didn't know what to do to overcome the problem he was facing. This was certainly not a trivial matter for him. He didn't know the reason why his eldest daughter suddenly ran away, just two days before her wedding to Reynand.
"Why don't you just cancel the wedding? Isn't that much better than having to force me?" said Ellina, still trying to refuse her father's request. She wasn't sure she would be able to accept Reynand as her husband in the future.
For her, Reynand was still a foreign man. Even though she had known the man since she had a relationship with Zyanna. However, they still weren't that close. She found it very difficult to accept her father's one-sided decision. She also couldn't possibly be willing to marry a man who was clearly her sister's ex-boyfriend.
"Why is it so difficult for you to understand all this, Ellina? How many times do I have to say that I don't want our family's reputation to be ruined because of this problem. What will they say next? They will think I can't look after my daughter!" Daniel snapped, getting even more furious when he saw Ellina who kept rejecting him.
"But, Dad ...." Ellina didn't continue her words. She just looked sadly at Daniel, then turned to look at Brianna. Hoping that the woman who gave birth to her could help her get out of this problem.
"Ellina, help us this time. This is for our common good. I'm sure you can do it."
"But, Mom—"
"Everything will be fine, even though you are married to that man. Trust me."
Instead of getting defense, Ellina was increasingly forced by her own biological mother. This made her truly unable to refuse and avoid this bitter reality.
So, what about Zyanna? The woman who should be responsible for all this? Why did she suddenly leave? Ellina still doesn't understand what really happened in her family.
Not wanting to remain silent, Ellina immediately contacted Zyanna. However, none of them connected. In fact, even short messages and emails sent to her sister, all had the status 'Pending'.
'Arrgh! What are you doing? Why did you leave without saying goodbye? Do you deliberately want to make me a victim? Don't you know how I feel right now, huh?' Ellina grumbled to Zyanna who was clearly not in front of her.
***
In the morning, Ellina deliberately contacted Reynand and invited the man to meet at a cafe. She hoped that Reynand would cancel the marriage. The only person she can collaborate with right now is Reynand.
Even though Richard had provided another solution, she was still not sure about taking that option. Until this moment, she still didn't understand her feelings for that man. Of course she also doesn't want to make the wrong decision.
However, she will use the solution given by Richard as a second choice if Reynand cannot help find another solution.
"Sorry I disturbed your time," said Ellina, coldly. She deliberately made small talk before starting to get to the heart of the conversation.
The woman was seen sitting opposite Reynand, who had been cold since she first arrived.
The man stared at Ellina's face for a moment, before responding.
"Just get to the point. I don't have much time for small talk!" Reynand replied with confirmation.
This cold-blooded man really doesn't like small talk. It was too cliche for him. Moreover, he, who in fact is a well-known businessman, certainly dedicates more time to work than just making small talk which will only waste his time and energy.
"Well. I think you know why I asked you to come here," said Ellina leaning forward slightly, although it couldn't be denied that she felt very nervous since facing Reynand.
Even though Reynand had a long relationship with her sister, Ellina was never close to him. She even tends to dislike Reynand's character, who seems less friendly and a little arrogant.
"I don't like playing puzzles. I have a lot of important things to do. If you call me just to make small talk and talk about unimportant things, sorry, I don't have time. Excuse me!" Reynand said firmly as he got up from his seat, intending to leave the cafe.
For some reason, the man seemed very relaxed about the current situation. Ellina thinks Reynand already knows the problem they are facing. However, why did the man look as if nothing was wrong?
Is it possible for a man to appear calm when his life and reputation are on the verge of ruin, because he was almost humiliated by the woman he was supposed to marry? That's what Ellina thought.
"Wait!"
Before the man had time to take a step, Ellina held him back. This suddenly made Reynand immediately turn towards Ellina and give up his intention to leave immediately.
"Please, wait a moment. Sit down!" Ellina asked, looking expectantly.
This was the first time she begged a man. Before, how could she possibly want to do such a despicable thing.
Seeing Ellina's sad gaze, Reynand couldn't bear it and decided to sit down again. He stared coldly at Ellina's face without saying anything else, as if he was waiting for Ellina to speak first.
Ellina can breathe a sigh of relief because she can melt the man who almost drove her crazy. It turns out to be true, facing a man who is too serious like Reynand, you really have to be patient.
"I don't know what problem happened between you guys, so my sister just left before the wedding started..." said Ellina, deliberately pausing her words.
"Honestly, I feel aggrieved by this incident. I really didn't want to marry you, but my parents forced me. I hope you understand what I mean," explained Ellina again.
Ellina seemed so fluent in speaking this time. She herself couldn't believe she could speak that fluently. Even though before, she always felt nervous when she met Reynand, especially when she saw the man's gaze. However, this time she looked at Reynand with confidence, even though there was a slight tremor attacking part of her body. This was evident from her lips trembling slightly when she spoke. However, this had no effect.
"Of course I understand what you mean," Reynand answered flatly, but managed to bring a smile to Ellina's face.
"So, can you help me?" Ellina asked enthusiastically. "I've tried to refuse and ask for the marriage to be annulled, but my father refused. I hope you can cancel it yourself. Maybe my father will understand."
"Can't."
