Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Tragic Mistake "Keep running! Don't stop!" Rozy's voice trembled with urgency as she cast a fearful glance over her shoulder into the dense shadows of the looming woods. Pain shot through her leg, a painful reminder of their desperate escape. Caleb, determined but skeptical, closed the distance between them, his scowl etched with doubt. "Do you really think they're after us? It could be just a harmless creature," he murmured, his voice filled with uncertainty. "I wish it were that simple, Caleb, but we can't take any chances. We have to assume they're right behind us," Rozy replied, her voice strained. The sound of rustling leaves and distant howls echoed through the night, intensifying her sense of urgency. Every fiber of her being screamed for them to flee, to find safety in the unforgiving darkness. She pushed through the fatigue, her heart pounding in her chest, while her wounded leg protested with each step. With the pursuing creatures closing in, Rozy knew they needed a plan. They couldn't outrun their hunters forever. As much as she yearned for a moment's respite, she made a split-second decision. Instead of continuing their frantic flight, she turned to face their unknown adversaries, her eyes ablaze with determination. Caleb, caught off guard, mirrored her resolve, his confusion temporarily replaced by unwavering loyalty. "Who are you? Why are you chasing us?" Rozy's voice rang out, cutting through the night's oppressive silence. A sinister chuckle filled the air as a tall figure stepped forward from the shadows. It was Abbott, his eyes gleaming with malice. "No need for introductions. Your fate is sealed," he sneered, his voice dripping with venom. A surge of anger coursed through Caleb, his voice laced with defiance. "You think you can take us down that easily? We won't go down without a fight," he spat, his tone defiant and unyielding. Rozy's mind raced, searching for a glimmer of hope amidst the encroaching danger. They needed to buy themselves time, a chance to understand their pursuers' motives and find a way to survive. She reached out, placing a steady hand on Caleb's shoulder, silently urging him to temper his rage. "Caleb, hold on. Perhaps there's a reason behind their pursuit. Let's give them a chance to explain," Rozy implored, her voice tinged with a mix of caution and curiosity. Abbott's gaze shifted, and for a moment, doubt flickered across his face. He reluctantly stepped forward, his voice colder but tinged with a hint of curiosity. "We suspect you of being rogue werewolves. Our orders, direct from the Alpha, are to exterminate any rogue we encounter. If you can prove your allegiance to a pack, we won't harm you," he revealed, his words laced with a trace of uncertainty. A glimmer of hope ignited within Rozy. This was their opportunity to clear their names, to prove their innocence. She searched her memories, desperately grasping at any evidence that might convince their pursuers of their true nature. "We belong to the Zorić pack!" Caleb interjected, a flicker of hope dancing in his eyes as he met Rozy's gaze. Abbott's face contorted with disbelief. "Zorić pack? Never heard of it. Your words alone won't sway us. Provide some proof if you want to live," he demanded, his voice laced with skepticism. Caleb's hand shot up, pointing to a distinct mark on his palm, bearing the name "Zorić." "This mark is a testament to my loyalty. It was etched by a skilled artist, capable of deceiving even the most discerning eye," he explained, a touch of pride coloring his words. As the silence lingered, Rozy held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest. The mark on Caleb's hand seemed to cast a spell, challenging their pursuers to see beyond their assumptions. After what felt like an eternity, a hesitant nod came from John, his doubt giving way to a begrudging acceptance. "Let's go, Abbott. It seems they might be telling the truth," he relented, his voice laced with lingering uncertainty. A mixture of relief and cautious optimism washed over Rozy as she listened to their retreating footsteps. Their lives, at least for now, were spared. Turning to Caleb, she couldn't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude and curiosity. "How did you manage to obtain that mark on your hand?" Caleb flashed her a wry smile, pride shimmering in his eyes. "I sought out a skilled tattoo artist who crafted this mark. It seems our pursuers couldn't discern its authenticity," he revealed, a touch of satisfaction tingeing his voice. "But we can't relax just yet. Our lives are still in danger." Rozy nodded in agreement, her mind refocusing on the task at hand. The mission they had embarked on was far from over. The true motives behind the Lycan king's decree weighed heavily on her mind, pushing her to uncover the truth. "The Lycan king's order to hunt down rogue wolves... I can't fathom why. What have we done to deserve such a fate?" Rozy pondered, frustration seeping into her voice. Caleb's grip tightened on her shoulder, offering silent comfort and understanding. "The answer lies within us, Rozy. We hold the key. We must uncover the truth and put an end to this madness," he reassured her, his voice resonating with determination. Rozy's gaze met Caleb's, gratitude and determination burning in her eyes. "I'm fortunate to have you as a friend, Caleb. Together, we'll face whatever comes our way." "And I'm equally fortunate to have you by my side, Rozy. We'll face this challenge head-on," Caleb replied, his voice filled with unwavering resolve. As their conversation came to an end, the stillness of the night shattered. Without warning, Abbott launched a surprise attack on Caleb, his claws ripping through his flesh. Rozy's world froze in a horrifying tableau as she witnessed her closest companion falling before her eyes. Anguish tore through her, mingling with an overwhelming surge of rage. "No!" Rozy's cry echoed through the night, a symphony of pain and desperation. Blinded by a haze of fury and sorrow, Rozy's hands tightened around the hilt of her silver sword. Her body moved with instinctual precision, her vision honed in on Abbott. In a whirlwind of vengeance, she lunged forward, driving the blade through his heart. Abbott crumpled to the ground, lifeless, leaving only John standing, his face drained of all confidence. John's eyes widened, his lips parting in a feeble attempt to speak. But before any words escaped, Rozy's wrath consumed her. With a swift strike, she silenced him, ending his torment. Her chest heaved, tears blending with sweat on her dirt-streaked face. The bodies of their assailants lay still at her feet, a grim testament to the battle fought and the lives lost. Grief washed over Rozy, threatening to drown her spirit. But she refused to surrender. Cradling Caleb's lifeless body, she whispered a solemn vow. "I won't let your sacrifice be in vain Rozy started walking towards her safe house and she didn’t know where else to go. The Rogue wolves have created a long and wide tunnel deep inside the mountain to protect their safety. Rozy enters the mountain with her heavy footsteps. Her black eyes turned red due to anger as well as the pain she was carrying. She wasn’t tall enough but the dimple on her face made her more beautiful. She was sweating as she was carrying Caleb’s body on her. Her life seemed shattered to her in a moment but she kept recalling the promise she had made to Caleb. Rozy marched towards her safe house, driven by a mix of anger and sorrow. The tunnel, a sanctuary built by the Rogue wolves, welcomed her with its vast expanse. She maneuvered through the dimly lit corridors, her determination eclipsing the darkness. Caleb's lifeless body weighed heavy on her, a constant reminder of the promises she had made. Navigating the labyrinthine tunnel, Rozy finally reached Caleb's room. She gently laid him on the bed, ensuring he was at peace. The luxury surrounding her felt incongruous amidst her grief. Pushing forward, she sought out Jared, their leader, prepared to face the repercussions of her actions. Her footsteps faltered as she entered his room, finding him engrossed in paperwork. "What brings you here at this time?" Jared's voice pierced the air, laced with irritation. Rozy kept her gaze down, her voice filled with remorse as she recounted the events that led to Caleb's demise. "There were two werewolves who suspected us of being rogue wolves. We tried to evade them, but they swiftly killed Caleb." Jared's bewildered expression turned to shock. "What did you do?" he asked, rising from his chair. "I killed them," Rozy confessed nervously. "I couldn't just stand there and let them kill us." Annoyance crept into Jared's voice. "I didn't expect you to surrender, but you could have evaded them. Now we face the risk of exposure, without the talented Caleb to assist us." Caught in her own guilt, Rozy defended herself abruptly. "I am not asking for your understanding. I couldn't let them kill us without a fight." Jared's tone turned stern. "I've warned you time and again to avoid crowded places. Your foolish mistake has cost us a valuable member. I'm afraid you must leave our civilization. We cannot risk more lives because of you." Aunt Capri, who had been silently observing, interjected, pleading with Jared to forgive Rozy. Disappointment etched on her scarred face, Aunt Capri's voice carried the weight of years spent caring for Rozy. Jared's irritation flared, raising his voice. "How many times have you apologized on her behalf? I cannot tolerate her anymore. It's a matter of our safety." Tears streaming down her face, Rozy turned to her aunt. "I didn't do it intentionally. I am a fool who failed to save Caleb's life. I don't deserve to remain in this holy place." Aunt Capri's love for Rozy was evident, as she declared, "If she leaves, then I will join her. I cannot bear to see her face the world alone." Rozy implored her aunt, tears blurring her vision. "Aunt, it's my mistake to bear, not yours. Please stay here. If you truly love me, listen to me." Her heart heavy with sorrow, Aunt Capri replied, "Take care of yourself, my child, and stay on the righteous path." Rozy turned to Jared, beseeching him for one last favor. "Please allow me to stay until we perform a ritual for Caleb and pray for his peace in heaven." Jared's commanding voice rang out. "Fine, but you must not linger any longer and never return to this tunnel." "I understand," Rozy replied, her voice heavy with the weight of acceptance. With Jared's departure, Rozy began packing her belongings. Regret washed over her as she pondered the absence of her parents and the hardships she had faced alone. Clad in a black dress, she arrived at the graveyard for Caleb's funeral. As flames consumed his body, tears mingled with the whispers of the crowd. "She is the reason Caleb is dead." "Thank goodness she's leaving. Who knows how many more deaths she would bring?" "I think Jared should have ended her life. He has shown her too much mercy." Overwhelmed by emotions, Rozy prepared to leave. Yet, Aunt Capri's reminder of a box from the storage room lingered in her mind. Irritated by the dust, she entered the room, frantically searching until she found the yellow box. With the intention to open it, she was interrupted by Jared passing by. She stowed the box in her bag and made her way to the tunnel's exit. At the entrance, her friends and Aunt Capri bid her farewell. Hugs were shared, promises made, and tears flowed freely. Rozy waved to Jared, her resolve unwavering. She embarked on her mission, ready to face any obstacle. The mysterious box burned with curiosity, but its secrets remained locked. Determined, she set her sights on the exit of the forest, unsure of what awaited her.
