You're Cheating On Me With A Man?
SUE
I unlocked the front door and set my bag down beside me as I stepped into the house. I smiled, thinking about the surprise.
I had taken a whole week off work to book a luxury staycation for David and me. We had been together for three years, and our anniversary was coming up. I wanted to give him something special. I took off my shoes at the entryway and set my keys on the console table.
The house was too quiet. Then, as I walked down the hallway, I started to hear something coming from our bedroom, and I stopped in my tracks.
It sounded like heavy breathing and deep, guttural moans. My heart did a sudden, uncomfortable flip.
David was supposed to be at work for another three hours.
I walked closer, my bare feet making no sound on the floor. The bedroom door was left open.
I heard the slapping of skin against skin before I saw it. Then I heard David's voice.
He was moaning loudly, a high, strained sound I had never heard him make before.
I pushed the door open.
The sight hit me like a physical blow. David was on his hands and knees, his back arched, another man behind him.
The man gripped David's hips tightly, driving into him with fast, heavy thrusts. David's eyes were closed, his head thrown back.
I froze. My stomach dropped so fast it felt like I had missed a step going downstairs. My mouth went dry. My ears started to ring.
"David?" My voice was barely a whisper, but they heard it.
They stopped instantly.
The stranger froze, still inside my boyfriend. David snapped his eyes open and looked at me.
His face went pale.
"Sue," David gasped, scrambling forward to pull the bedsheet over himself.
The other man stepped back, completely naked, showing no shame as he grabbed a pair of boxers from the floor.
"What the hell is this?" I screamed, the shock finally turning into anger.
Tears burned the corners of my eyes, but I refused to let them fall yet. "You are with a man in our bed? You are cheating on me with a man?"
Instead of looking guilty, David's face hardened. He stood up, wrapping the blanket around his waist, and stepped between me and the stranger.
"What are you doing home early?" David shouted back, his voice booming in the small room. "You weren't supposed to be here! You sneak around my house and spy on me?"
"Your house?" I yelled, my voice cracking. "I pay the rent! Get this piece of garbage out of my sight right now!"
I lunged forward, grabbing the stranger's arm. His skin was hot and wet with sweat. I tried to pull him toward the door, wanting him gone, wanting the filth out of my space.
"Get out! Pack your clothes and get the f**k out of my house!"
David grabbed my wrist, squeezing it tightly until I let go of the man. He shoved me back a step. "Don't touch him, Sue! Leave him alone!"
I looked at David, then at the stranger, who was calmly putting on his jeans. The stranger didn't look worried at all. He looked amused. I looked back at David's defensive posture, the way his body shielded the other man from me. In that split second, a cold truth washed over me.
He wasn't sorry. He didn't care about my broken heart. If it came down to a choice right now, David was going to choose him. He had already chosen him.
"You're protecting him?" I whispered. "You're taking his side?"
"Just shut up and get out of the room so we can finish talking," David snapped, turning his back on me to help the man find his shirt.
The disrespect was the final straw. Something inside me snapped.
"No," I said. "Both of you are leaving. Right now."
"Sue, don't be dramatic," David said, turning around with a scowl.
"I am not being dramatic. Get your things and get out of my house, David. We are done."
David laughed. "You're kicking me out? Over this? You're being ridiculous."
"I said get out!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.
The stranger quickly grabbed his shoes and keys, sliding past me in the hallway without saying a word. He practically ran down the stairs. David watched him go, then turned on me, his eyes full of rage. He didn't bother packing a bag. He just grabbed his wallet, his phone, and his jacket from the chair.
He walked up to me, stopping just inches from my face.
"You will regret this, Sue," David hissed, his teeth clenched. "You think you can handle this place on your own? You're making the biggest mistake of your life. You'll be begging me to come back by the end of the week."
"Go to hell," I said.
He pushed past me, walking down the stairs and slamming the front door behind him.
The moment the lock clicked, my knees gave out. I sank onto the floor of the hallway. The tears I had been holding back flooded out. I sobbed so hard my chest ached, my body shaking.
Three years of my life, gone in a single afternoon. The staycation brochures were still in my purse. The images of what I had just seen flashed behind my eyelids every time I closed them.
I cried until my throat was raw and my eyes were swollen shut. The afternoon light turned into night. I finally dragged myself off the floor. I needed to wash the smell of him out of my house.
I walked to the kitchen, grabbed a trash bag, and started with his side of the closet first. His shirts. His shoes. The cologne he never let me touch. I threw all of it in without folding, without thinking. My hands moved faster than my mind could keep up with.
Then I picked up my phone and blocked his number. I did not cry when I did it. That surprised me more than anything else that day.
