Pumpkin head
-Our story begins in Ireland with a man, a man whom the locals used to call stingy Jack. Jack was a hard-drinking Irishman, quite a freeloader, and a very mean man. -Professor Noēl Croner gave us a puzzled look. We were attentive and fascinated with what he was going to tell. -Although Professor Croner's story began in Ireland, the truth is that we are in Jazak City. This is one of the 135 cities in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires. It is part of the urban agglomeration of Greater Buenos Aires, it is the largest city that borders the city of Buen Neshamá and the most populated in the entire province.
About Professor Croner, what you should know about him is that he's a 5th grade history teacher, I don't know if it's because of his profession or because he just loved telling stories, but he takes advantage of every October (coming closer to the date of Halloween), to tell legends to the students that I had each year. He is a man in his 30s, light skinned (vanilla color) with a Garibaldi beard with a black beard with some gray hair, his beard matches his long hair with shaved sides combed with gel and a low half bun.
-The aforementioned makes it clear the type of person he was, but in addition to all that he was also very cunning and cunning, in fact, he used tricks to deceive or commit minor crimes. So much so that Jack was also known as the most roguish Irishman. -Professor Croner tells us.-He was so cunning that he managed to do something that will seem impossible to them and that is that Jack managed to deceive the devil himself. Jack was being chased by some villagers who he had stolen from, I mean gold, jewels and other belongings, and when he met the devil.
Of course, Professor Croner not only told Halloween legends, he did the same approaching each holiday, he always told legends related to the date that is celebrated, last week he told the legend of the first night of witches. Today it was the turn of the legend of Jack-o-Lantern.
-The devil told Jack that the moment of his death had come and that his soul belonged to him by right, to say this the devil was based on the life full of sins that Jack had had.-Professor Croner commented while putting a hand in his pants pocket. Professor Croner took his hand out of his closed pocket in a fist, this he did so that his students couldn't see what he had taken out.
-However, the thief delayed his luck by using his glibness to tempt the tempter, he managed to convince the devil to transform into a coin. -Says Professor Croner showing his students a silver coin.
That was what the professor had taken out of his pocket, an ancient silver coin.
-Jack managed to tempt the devil to punish the villagers who persecuted him, he would have achieved it by claiming that those villagers were faithful to God, and that made the devil unable to resist playing a trick on them. Jack told the devil (who could take any form) to turn himself into a coin with which he would pay for the stolen goods; later, when the coin/devil mysteriously disappeared, the villagers would fight each other to find out who had stolen it. -Professor Croner explained to us.
-The devil agreed to the proposal immediately to punish those villagers by turning into a silver coin, and Jack caught him putting it in his pocket, since inside he had a crucifix. -At the end of explaining that, Professor Croner put the coin back in his pocket.
Professor Croner was a kind of Showman when telling his stories. He always accompanied his narration with some small performance, and that delighted his students.
I don't know what students he may have had before and after, but we eagerly awaited the stories that Professor Croner told each holiday.
-To free himself, the devil granted Jack 10 more years of life, and he accepted, but obviously not everything ends here, because that experience made Jack reconsider, he went from being a freeloader to a person who helped his neighbors. -Professor Croner told his attentive and fascinated students. -In this way little by little Jack went from being a hated person to a very loved person, and trusted, he even became the night watchman of the city. As a night watchman, Jack was in charge of watching the streets at night, regulating public lighting and opening doors for neighbors.
This legend was one of Professor Croner's favorites, that is due to his strong religious beliefs that made him like legends where god or the devil (or both) are mentioned.
-Unluckily for Jack, ten years later, Satan went looking for Jack for good, as part of his deal. -Said Professor Croner.-Upon meeting the devil again, he asked him to go to an apple tree and take one last apple before he died. Jack used his smooth talk again with which he convinced the demon and they went to a forest.
Capturing the children's attention was a difficult thing that only Professor Croner could achieve.
-The devil climbed the tree to pick an apple and Jack surrounded the entire tree with crucifixes, leaving the devil trapped for the second time. This angered the devil greatly, as a mere mortal whom he considered inferior had deceived him and not a Jack humiliated the devil twice. -Professor Croner told us raising two fingers.-Jack asked him that in exchange for freeing his soul it could never be touched by the devil, and he accepted to free himself. Jack kept helping as many people as he could until one day he finally died, just like any other living thing.
The professor was silent for a moment, of course it was understandable; Talking about death is not something that anyone likes.
-But when he went to enter heaven, Saint Peter did not let him enter, since he had led a very sinful life. Of course, his life had been too sinful for him to enter heaven; however, the devil had promised not to take his soul, and thus he was also left out of hell. -Professor Croner said pointing with his left hand to his right and, with his right hand to his left. -Luckily for Jack, changing his life before dying left him in a state of purgatory.
-What's that? -My best friend Lara Orea asked Professor Croner.
- Good question Laura. Purgatory is the state of those who die in friendship with God, but, although they are sure of their eternal salvation, they still need purification to enter eternal bliss.-Professor Croner replied to Lara.-Being rejected by heaven and hell was condemned to roam the shadows of the earth as a spirit until it is purified. Jack wondered how he could see where he was going, since there was no light at all.
Professor Croner placing his hand in front of his eyes and shaking it up and down.
-At that moment the devil saw the opportunity to make fun of Jack, and threw him an ember that would never stop burning, because it was an ember of fire from hell.-Professor Croner said as he settled down, he paused and went to the desk to look for a chalk.-But god also entered the scene to give him a turnip, which Jack hollowed out, put the ember inside and began to wander aimlessly around the world to find a place where he could finally rest until he was accepted by heaven .
Professor Croner when he approached the blackboard holding the chalk with his thumb and middle fingers.
With his chalk, Professor Croner began to write a name on the blackboard.
-Then he became known as Jack-o'-Lantern or Lantern Jack. -Professor Croner said when he finished writing "Jack o' Lantern" on the blackboard.
-Jack's lantern both here and in Ireland and Scotland was a turnip carved with Jack's gloomy face, which they used to place in windows to drive away the devil and all evil spirits from their homes; In the north of Spain, turnips were also hollowed out and candles were placed to mark the path for the souls towards their return to the light and rest with God.-Professor Croner explained ending his story.
-Why do you see in the cartoons that they use Pumpkins? -I asked curiously. I am Deborah Sorsone. When I finished asking that my classmates held their laughter, it must have been very funny what I asked. Of course the teacher ignored them and looked at me.
-According to legend, Halloween originated in Ireland and its pumpkin icon called Jack's lantern was once a turnip. Which they decorated as now is done with pumpkins. -Professor Croner answered me. -It was when they emigrated to America, that the pumpkin became famous and not the turnip. This was due to the temperatures, which were not conducive to growing turnips, so in those American cartoons you see that they do it with pumpkins and not with turnips.
-What do we want pumpkins for? Here we have the pumpkin head-said a child sitting at the next table. The boy was Walter Greendle, he is a typical silly boy who always found pleasure in making fun of others. He is a fool who was amused by that, although apparently not only he was amused, in fact, the other roommates began to laugh at that mockery.
Pumpkin Head was the nickname with which I was always teased by my peers. Next to me, sharing the desk, is my best friend Lara. The two of us turned to see Walter who was laughing with the other fools in the room.
-Walter Greendle Do you want to earn a punishment?-Professor Croner asked Walter.
-No teacher, I was playing. -Walter replied to Professor Croner. At that moment the bell rings announcing that classes are over. "It's time to go,"-Professor Croner exclaimed.
For the teachers in that group, it is not surprising that at some point a student in that group bothers me, and it is that they also bothered the other students, but for some reason they bothered me more persistently. That is his favorite game, moreover, it seemed that the students in that group were looking forward to two things: one is the stories that Croner tells and another is to annoy me. It actually seems like "the tease Deborah game" is what they look forward to even more than the Professor Croner stories. Leaving school Lara and I went together, like every day, since we were going in the same direction, in fact, Lara lives 6 blocks from the school and I lived 4. That made Lara go with me to the school and that we also return together.
We did almost everything together, Lara sat next to me in class, also during lunch time and at recess we walked down the hall together.
-What did you think of the legend he told today about Halloween?.-I asked my best friend.
-It was interesting, although I didn't like it that much. -Lara replied.
-I loved it, in fact I think it's my favorite.-I exclaimed while walking next to her.-What is your favorite story?
Lara looked at me again, making a gesture that indicated she was thinking.
-I liked it when he told the story of the first night of witches.
-Really?. -Ask something incredulous.
-And why wouldn't it be serious?. -Lara asked me walking next to me.
-It's just that I don't think that's a very interesting story, it doesn't have fantasy or anything paranormal.-I replied walking next to her.
-What makes me like that story is what he said about the people who were accused of being witches burned to death is something that makes one reflect on the ignorance of the people.-Lara explained.
-You're right about that. -I told her.
-Maybe what you don't like is that it doesn't have ghosts or monsters, but it's a true story. -Lara replied.
-Just because it's a true story doesn't mean there isn't a ghost or two. -I answered smiling.
Lara giggled playfully.
-You're crazy about paranormal things.
-Yes, I must admit that it scares me, for example, to watch horror movies, but I still like to watch them. -I told her walking with her.
-You're a masochist then. -Lara joked, moving her head to push back her ponytail, since it was over her shoulder.
-Horror movies are to be scared, if you don't get scared with those movies they are not really horror or they don't do it very well. -Object seeing that we were arriving at my house. At that moment I noticed that Lara was looking at me in a strange way, actually, I don't think she was looking at me. She only pays attention to my hair and after the kind of attention my hair gets at school it's not something I like.
-Because you see me that way? - I told him sullenly.
-Your hair is unique!.-He stared at how my orange hair gleamed in the sunlight. The light had a strange effect on my hair making it shine, stand out and shimmer too much.
My hair in the light stood out almost illuminating, like the flame of a lit candle on a dark night.
Lara is a slim, fair-skinned girl with a heart-shaped face. Her brown eyes that perfectly match her medium brown (light brown) hair, similar to varnished wood. She wears her hair in a ponytail style, with straight bangs.
Deborah, on the other hand, is a girl with medium fair skin (peach color), oval face with emerald green eyes, and long protruding hair.
-My hair is only unique in a good way for you. -I Told frowning slightly. -But for others my hair is only to make fun of and play practical jokes on me.
-You're an orange-haired girl, there's nothing wrong with that. -He answered turning to look at both sides to cross the street to the block of the house where I live.
-This already has me quite upset! - Protest vigorously. -They don't get tired of making me angry and it's mainly because of my hair.
There are two shades of redheads, light redheads that tend towards a more orange color or, on the contrary, a more reddish tone that is dark redheads. However, my hair was pure orange; It seems that I had applied fantasy orange dye, the bad thing is that when it was night, it was cloudy and there was no low light. If that was the case my hair was exactly the same color as a pumpkin, in fact I can tell that if they put two pumpkins next to me they would have a hard time guessing which one is my head.
The fact that her hair is the same color as a pumpkin when the light is off earned me the nickname "Pumpkin Head." That was something that I hated with all my heart besides the heavy jokes that those fools that some would call companions played on me.
-Like today they told me pumpkin head.-I reminded Lara putting a serious face.
-That was Walter. -Lara responds to Deborah, stopping next to her in front of her house. -Don't pay attention to her, her brain didn't go beyond kindergarten.
-It's not just Walter, it's everyone. -I replied putting on a serious face. -And it's not just nicknames either; the other day in class pumpkin seeds were thrown into my hair using the barrel of the pen as if it were a blowgun.
-Yes, I remember. He answered me in a curt tone.
-You see it? -I asked Lara.-I don't know why they have to make fun of me.
-You must ignore them. -Lara answered me stopping next to me when I got to my house.
-Sometimes I would like to take revenge on everyone and make them disappear. -I crossed my arms, frowning slightly.
-The best revenge will be your success. -Lara answered me. -The same boys who make fun of you today will be behind you tomorrow, and saying that they know you when you achieve what you want and they are complaining that life is unfair.
-It's the bad thing, being a good person isn't enough to be treated well, something is needed. -I told Lara, still with a serious face.
-That's why you know that karma is going to come to them some day. -Lara exclaimed with a smile.
I didn't feel like responding verbally, so I just nodded my head. Lara said goodbye to my Deborah with a smile, of course when I saw Lara walk away that smile disappeared in seconds.
-Maybe one day I'll come instead of waiting for karma. -Deborah said to myself before entering her house.
Of course, that was a recurring thought that I had, in fact, sometimes I fell asleep trying to imagine what his cries of pain would be like. I had to listen to their mocking laughter as they played their practical jokes on me every day and I think it was about time I could hear their cries of pain as they begged for their lives.
When I got home my mother was still in art school so I took the opportunity to go straight to my room. We could say that my room is my fortress or private refuge because it is the place where I can be alone and after a hard day at school (basically every day) it is something that I love. I took off my slippers and sat cross-legged on my bed to watch TV.
Normally, during the day I watch cartoons and at night I watch horror movies on my DVD. Of course, some people find it difficult to sleep when watching horror movies at night, and that's what makes scary movies fantastic!
That's what the name "scary movie" or "horror movie" as you prefer, they wouldn't be called that if they were to make people laugh.
Tonight I already knew what movie I was going to see, in fact I had already started to see the Wrong Turn saga. In fact, yesterday I saw the first and second movies, so today at night I took the opportunity to watch the third, fourth, and tomorrow I will end up watching the fifth Wrong Turn movie, since they are the only ones I like.
