When I managed to open my eyes a little, the lights seemed so bright out of nowhere. It was like someone had turned the dimmer switch up full blast in the time it took me to blink. It was so bright, I couldn't get my eyelids to comply with my requests to open them. I couldn't feel David anymore. His lips were no longer burning into my skin and I missed the feeling more than I had missed anything before. The pain had eased, but my stomach was burning with pain. Every time I even considered movement, the pain squealed through my stomach. Still much better than it had been before, at least. I wondered if the man-child paramedic had given me something for the pain. As I finally managed to flutter my eyes open a little, everything looked different. Everything seemed white and bright.
