Week 1: How to create an initial outline
Step One: Ideas
First Idea:
A girl had lived her whole life below the fog. She was offered a once in a lifetime chance to live above it in a Metropolis with the social elites.
Second Idea:
The Metropolis' new Governess will do anything to keep the impoverished inferiors below the fog from mixing with the notable social elites above the fog.
Step Two: Plot
Devin, an orphan living in the confined, foul-smelling slums below the fog finds out that her father was the previous Governor of the city above the fog and he left her everything in his will including his last wish for her to join the social elites.
Governess Justine Williams feels as if the poor people below the fog would undo everything her great grandfather has done to keep the two different worlds apart.
1. Why was Devin living below the fog?
She did not have social elite status when she was born because her mother was from below the fog. Her father felt she would be safer living away from those who would do anything for power and status. She was considered an orphan and raised below the fog where living conditions were unjust because of the lack of fresh air and sunlight.
2. Why will the Governess do anything to prevent people below the fog from living above it?
Her great grandfather created technology to separate the two different worlds with a thick layer of poisonous fog. For decades, no one questioned the order of things but, with the mysterious death of Devin's father, who wanted to remove the fog, tensions are running high on both sides of the fog.
3. Why did Devin's father make his last wish for her to live above the fog?
He had discovered some information that could start a revolution; secrets that eventually got him killed. He felt as if Devin needed to know the truth and he thought she could make them all listen to her since she's from below the fog.
Step Three: Scenes, supporting characters, and logic
Scene One: Devin's home
Following the death of her father, Devin is visited by two guards and an attorney to escort her to her fathers estate above the fog. She is presented with a letter that he wrote before his death, detailing how he had someone looking after her her entire life. He goes on tell her that living above the fog isn't as amazing as it seems.
Scene Two: The Governess' estate
Governess Justine Williams meets Devin at her estate for an on camera interview. When the cameras are rolling the Governess is extremely generous to Devin but when they aren't she tells her why she doesn't like "her kind" and that Devin doesn't belong above the fog. She goes on to tell her she will always be watching. Devin felt extremely unwelcomed and belittled but decides its for the best not to make enemies on her first day above the fog if she intends to stay.
Scene Three: Devin's Estate
Devin meets Carol, the woman who has been watching over her from a distance ever since she was born. Carol then presents Devin with a series of audio files and video recordings made specifically for her from her father, detailing the secrets he has found out. He gives her and Carol's son Connor, the mission he had failed. They have to destroy the fog and the destabilizing social hierarchy that separates the two worlds. Devin is told that her father was killed to protect these secrets and is motivated to make a change.
