First Meeting
I smirked at the giant male werewolf sitting across from me, who was feigning boredom. The years of studying body language for my line of work told me that his stealing glances from the corners of his eyes while he drummed his fingers on the table was a feeble attempt to have the upper hand. I internally rolled my eyes at such obvious acting and suppressed the urge to scoff at him. Instead, I kept a steady gaze to watch him squirm under my nonchalant scrutiny. Yup, this isn’t going to be fun, and I'll probably have a headache from rolling my eyes so hard I can see my own brain.
“Ahem, well let me start with introductions…” Chris said, breaking the tension. “Alpha Cole Meyers, this is my sister Minuette Larson.”
“Oh, for the love of… Chris, you may be my Alpha, but you are not going to introduce me by that name.” I interrupted. I noticed that Alpha Meyers stopped acting bored and was giving us his full attention. So the big tough alpha can feign interest.
“Minnie, c’mon. I have to use your legal name for formalities. What do you want me to say? “Hey, this here is my sis, 'The Death Adder '.” Chris mocks with a twang in his voice.
“I’ve told you not to use that nickname in public. There’s nothing "mini" about me. I swear to the Goddess, when I see Dad next time I’m going to give him a swift kick to the shins for naming me after a French song he heard once.” I sighed and turned to the impassive statue across from me. “I do apologize, Alpha Meyers. Let’s start over properly. I’m LtCol Larson of the Royal Guard. My friends call me Min or Addie. I’m sure if this agreement goes through, you can call me by either of those names.”
Alpha Meyers clears his throat and looks at me with neutral eyes. “Nice to meet you, LtCol Larson. I did not realize that you were the infamous “The Death Adder”. I have never seen you before, since you have not attended any formal functions in the last 10 years. “
“Oh, I am at those functions. I just work behind the scenes keeping their Majesties, the Royal Lycan family, safe from any threats.” I say matter-of-factly. “I honestly prefer it that way, since I don’t understand the appeal of putting on uncomfortable clothes for a giant pissing contest.”
My brother choked on the water he was drinking. He gave me a wry grin that told me he appreciated the comment but would have to give a "talking to" about it later. He inherited so much of Dad's mannerisms. I shrugged when our eyes made contact and turned back to the hulk of a man with an incredulous sheen in his forest green eyes. Hmm, I can work with this. A soft knock and the sound of the door handle turning drew all our attention to the beautiful and heavily pregnant brunette walking into the room. Chris got the dopiest smile on his face as he stood up and walked over to her. He offered his arm to her for the few steps it took to get to the empty chair next to his. He gently pulled out the chair for her and helped her sit. There was a slight flash of disappointment when she took in my attire, which was replaced by a gentle smile that I knew all too well. Her perfect Luna public mask that could get a rabid mountain lion to back down. I smiled warmly at her before I brought my face back to my usual RBF to look at Alpha Meyer.
He has what one would say are classical Romanesque features. A strong nose, square jaw, alert eyes, and well-formed lips graced his face, and jet black hair topped his head. He also boasted a broad and well-chiseled chest that was evident through the three-piece suit he wore. Most women would swoon at this, but he really wasn’t my cup of tea.
I let my mind wander to the boyish grin and sandy brown hair of my past. I unconsciously put my hand on the locket that hung on the chain around my neck and rubbed the well-worn moonstone cabochon set in the middle of it. The lady who just entered the room gently reached over and touched my elbow. I dropped my hand as I came out of my reminiscence.
“Alpha Meyers, this is my Luna, Becca Larson. She’ll be joining us for the rest of the conversation,” said Chris proudly.
“How do you do?” Becca asked gracefully, “I do apologize for being late. There was a kitchen emergency that the Omegas needed my input on. I hope you will excuse me.”
Alpha Meyers’s eyes softened at Becca and replied, “Nothing to excuse; you were taking care of your Luna duties as any good Luna should. And it seems you are expecting soon. You could not have attended. I would have understood.”
Huh, now I see what his type is. This is going to be too easy. I flashed the vicious smile that I reserve when I’m hunting and watched Alpha Meyer get taken aback. This time I audibly scoffed, which seemed to piss him off, judging from the bulging vein on his forehead. I snorted quietly, which earned me a glare from Becca.
“I assume that not much was discussed before I came in,” Becca said, giving me a pointed look. “I hope we can get back on track.”
“Of course, Luna Larson. I’m done wasting my time with senseless chatter and am eager to get back to my territory,” he replied. “In all honesty, after meeting LtCol Larson, it makes me question what the Oracle was thinking when she matched us.”
“Now there is something we both agree on.” I retort with practiced boredom in my voice. “In the spirit of being painfully truthful, I admit if it wasn’t for being commanded by their Majesties, my Alpha, and my Luna, I would not be sitting here right now. I, too, am a very busy woman. I have men to lead and mountains of paperwork waiting for me. Why don’t we just say we tried and we are not compatible”
"Um, I think what my sister-in-law means is we should discuss expectations before rushing to an agreement. Isn’t that right, Addie?” Becca says the last part through her teeth.
I sigh. “I suppose if my Luna commands, I must obey.” I give an even look across the table that makes the rest of his party stare back in shock.
“I’m glad to see you are not completely belligerent,” Alpha Meyers comments.
“Oh, I am very obedient and respectful to those who have authority over me. Since I am not a part of your pack, I don’t feel the need to be either to you.” I retort with my RBF on. I see the vein on his forehead start to bulge more. I began to wonder what it would take to make it throb. I’m hoping not much.
“I think things got off on the wrong foot here. Let’s start over.” The ever-perfect Luna tries to smooth over. I could feel the hidden rage that was seeping into my side. Thor, I’m gonna hear it from her after the meeting. “I believe my sister-in-law wants to apologize for the rude remark.”
“Yes, yes. I’m so sorry for disrespecting your position, Alpha Meyers,” I say curtly. I cheer internally as the vein starts to pulse. This is so fun.
“I accept your heartfelt apology, LtCol Larson,” He replies. “But your personality aside, I have no intention of taking on a chosen mate for my Luna. Especially one that is so advanced in her years as you are.”
“Huh, really? So is 28 too old? Does that make you a geriatric blowhard at 35?” There it is, the forehead vein throbbing begins.
“And for your information, I have no intention of taking a mate of any kind. Especially a chauvinistic pig of an Alpha that only wants a demure Luna on his arm to show off in front of people.” I hear Chris stifle a giggle, and I can feel Becca giving us a face-melting glare for a few seconds. I’m sure she has slapped her Luna smile on again quickly.
