I cant take it anymore!
" I don't know what she wants from me, Max! She's the one that lied, cheated and emptied my accounts! Now she wants my home that I worked my hands to the bone for? " Thomas is on the phone with his attorney, yelling about the most recent offer, from his soon-to-be ex-wife. " Yeah, well I'd rather burn it to the ground before I let her get her hands on it! I gave her all of me, and this is what she Does! " Thomas begged his attorney not to let him lose his home to the woman that had given him nothing. 5 years he spent begging and pleading with her for a child, and she was never "ready" for a family. Now he knows why. She never loved him, she only wanted to benefit financially. " I just can't take it anymore! I need a vacation. One where nobody can contact me with any more stress! " He threw his phone onto his bed, and then himself. His dog, Sandy, sits in the corner watching him as if she's debating whether to approach Thomas when he's in this mindset. " Come here, girl. I don't mean to frighten you by raising my voice. Daddy's just stressed out. " Sandy doesn't hesitate and takes a leap onto the bed to snuggle her best friend. "What do you think about a vacation in the woods, sandy girl?" She licks his face in excitement, tail wagging. She knows Thomas loves her more than anything, and anywhere he goes, she will be right alongside him.
Thomas opens his laptop, and begins searching for remote cabins. He finds himself looking at a cabin in Canada. Remote, right off Lake Ontario, it's perfect. And the price is even better. " What do you think about this one, Sandy? " Now he is beginning to see himself on vacation, no stress, no lawyers, no work... nothing. He picks up the phone. " Hey, it's me. I'm not going to be at work for the next two weeks. Tell my clients I have a family emergency and I will contact them when I get back into the office. Forward them to the new paralegal we just hired if they have any questions. If there are any serious problems, you can reach me by e-mail. I'll bring my computer with me. "
He makes the reservations, and jumps up off his bed. This is the first time he has smiled in weeks. The divorce has been long and hard. It's not even over yet. He just wants it to end, so he can move on with his life. He wasted so much time with her that he could've spent it in a meaningful relationship, possibly raising kids and a family. That's what he really wants; a family. When he was a young child, his parents were always fighting over money. Thomas used to stare out his window and watch the rain. " When I get older, I will have the best job, so my wife and I will never fight! " Thomas thinks about that very moment as he is packing. " Look at me now, dad. Just like you, fighting over money with a woman that never loved me. "
It's 5:00 Am. His alarm clock went off. Thomas reaches over, grabs his phone and shuts it off. He remembered that he must get up and begin his long drive to Canada. He would have flown, but he wasn't a fan of the arrangements they had for Sandy. Sandy is all he has left after the divorce. The only one that truly has unconditional love for him. Unconditional love, now that's hard to find. Thomas had some beautiful girlfriends in the past, but the more beautiful they were, the more selfish and unloving they became. Thomas would not make this mistake again, he thought. He swore to himself that the next time he met someone he would get to know them much better before he took a leap of faith the way he did with his soon-to-be ex-wife, Kayla. Kayla was beautiful, she was confident, and she was raised in a wealthy family. She never needed or wanted anything as a child. Not like Thomas. Thomas had to earn everything that he had. He grew up poor in the mountains of West Virginia. Where moonshine-fueled arguments were a common occurrence between his parents. He didn't like to think about his childhood. He liked to pretend that he was also from a well-off family, and that he never knew what real hunger felt like. That was a lie, of course. He could never tell his well-off friends from the city. He would just about die of embarrassment. Thomas was now all packed, showered and ready to go. He took Sandy out for a bathroom break, and loaded her into the car. "Are you ready to go, Sandy dear?" Sandy excitedly jumped into the vehicle, ready for any adventure Thomas would take her on. He gets into the black SUV, sets his GPS, turns his phone onto "do not disturb", and begins the long drive to Canada.
