Chapter 20The elevator dropped. Pam grabbed my arm in the dark. Neither one of us screamed. Too surprised to do much of anything, I guess. I finally reached out blindly and found the control panel. I concentrated and tried to will the elevator back into functioning.
Lights flickered back on. Our rate of descent slowed. The floor indicator came back but it was one of those old fashioned ones with a pointer indicating our level. It came to rest on the B, all the way over at the left.
“Basement?” Pam asked.
The doors dinged and slid open. Light from the elevator spread out into the hallway. I lowered my hand, but as soon as I did the lights flickered again and started to go out. I reached up with my other hand and hit the top floor button.
