Chapter 6: Maddison

It was what looked like a two-story luxury log cabin. The home had large floor-to-ceiling picture windows. Large wooden post with a roof covering that extended down the walkway leading up to the large glass doors. I could see a beautiful stone chimney climbing along the going all up the side of the cabin. I stood there in awe at what I was seeing, only to come to by hearing a man and woman fussing. The woman's voice was elevated. Before I could come into my bearings, a petite woman with a very round belly was standing in front of me, anger spewing out of her. “Who the hell are you? What are you doing with my mate?” The accusation heavy in her words. I could see Jackson smiling at her while Tristan stared at me, eyes wide. “Don’t look at them, look at me, who are you? Don’t you know they have only one mate and that is me? I may be pregnant and human, but I’ll still whoop your ass if you try me?” I returned my attention to the woman. “I’m sorry, my name is Maddison, and trust me, I DO NOT want your mates, that would be gross.” Her eyes nearly bulged out of her head, hearing me calling her mate gross. “Maddison? Maddie? Oh my goddess, it is you!” Before I can react to the tiny and heavily pregnant woman in front of me, I hear my name being called before strong arms envelop me in a tight hug. By the smell, it's Tristan. He finally came out of his stupor. “Hey Tristan, maybe introduce me to your mate before she kills me. Jackson didn’t seem to think that was important,” I say as he lets me go. “Right, right. We just got you back. We don’t want our mate to kill you.” He laughs. I missed them. “Liz, honey, this is our baby sister, Maddison. Maddie this is our beautiful mate, Liz.” He finally clears the air. “I’ve always wanted a sister,” I said to her as I tried to break the tension. Her face is frozen before she reaches to give me a hug, her round belly poking into my stomach. My wolf purrs when we feel a kick. “Nice to meet you, Maddie. I’m sorry for threatening you. These werewolf hormones from the babies are making me a little bit hostile. I’m normally not so aggressive and territorial.” Liz apologizes. “It's okay. I like that you will throw down for my brothers, and I am happy you are their mate,” I explained to her. “Oh, before I forget, I brought you some éclairs that I made at my bakery yesterday,” I said, turning back to the car to grab them. Her smile is wide when I hand over the box. “You bake? We are definitely going to get along. Come inside, let's eat these while the men cook up dinner, and you can tell me all about yourself before the Alpha gets here.” At the mention of the Alpha coming over to dinner, my heart rate spikes. We walk inside, and the inside is as beautiful as the outside, but unfortunately, I can't focus on anything other than the fact she said the Alpha would join us for dinner. “The Alpha? Is he coming for dinner here?” I can tell there is panic in my voice. I level it out immediately. “Is that normal for you guys? Having dinner with the Alpha, I mean.” I try to sound more nonchalant than I feel. “Um, not actually. Well, I mean not all the time. He’s friends with Tristan and Jackson, but he’s also been busy.” She looks at me and then looks around before leaning in and asking quietly if I could keep a secret. I nod, and she then proceeds to tell me a fact that blows my mind and angers me all at once. “The Alpha has been busy these past few years. He has this she-wolf that he “plays” with, if you know what I mean. I can hear them when they talk, the Alpha and my mates. When he comes over with his beta and gamma, and they have boys' night, no topic is off limits. Well, one night he said that he had a fated mate. That his fated mate had disappeared the night before he was supposed to claim her, and he'd been searching for her ever since. Apparently, this female that he’s been “playing” with is not his mate but just a way to sate his Alpha needs. Ever since they were seventeen.” She said all in one breath before breaking one of the éclairs in half and shoving it into her mouth. She laid back on the couch, her auburn hair fanning behind her. Her green eyes lock onto mine, and she says something that rocks me for the second time. Letting me know that even though she’s human, nothing gets past her. “You know, you disappeared from the pack a long time ago. About the same time as the alpha has been looking for his mate. Isn’t that interesting?” My wolf bristles from her perception. I was about to reply when I heard my brother open the door. In walks the Alpha, my fated mate. Then and there, I decided I would treat this as if I didn't know him. He's already destroyed my life once, and I won't let him get the best of me again.
