Chapter 1 – The Eve of Destiny
The first rays of dawn spilled into my room, painting the walls gold and orange. Today was the day I had waited for my entire life my eighteenth birthday. My wolf stirred within me, restless and eager, mirroring the excitement thrumming through my veins.
"Finally", my wolf purred inside my mind, "you’re old enough. Can you feel it? The pull of your mate is close".
My wolf name is Emily, I got her on my thirteen birthday. It was painful at first, my whole body felt like it was breaking and on fire. After the first time, it became smooth. I can shift at will whenever I want.
I got to meet my wolf after that. She is the best. We fight sometimes but that doesn't mean we don't love each other. She is one of the best things that have ever happened to me.
I laughed softly at the familiar voice only I could hear. “I know,” I whispered. “But who could it be? I wonder if I’ll recognize him immediately, or if it will sneak up on me.”
"Oh, you’ll know", Emily replied with a sly edge. "The pull is like electricity. You won’t mistake it for anything else. And don’t get distracted, we have to be ready."
I shivered in anticipation, brushing my hair with more care than usual. The pack had always told me stories about how some wolves didn’t meet their mates until much later, while others were struck the instant their fated mate appeared. I hoped it would be the latter, though a part of me feared rejection even before it happened.
There was a soft knock at the door, and before I could call a greeting, it swung open. “Happy birthday!” My best friend bounded in, arms full of gifts and a grin that could light up the darkest forest.
My bestfriend Elina, who I have known since we were little. I have two best friends Elina and Lira. I can't remember my childhood without them, we are diapers friends. Did everything together and I can't remember any important memories without them sticking out.
“You made it!” I said, laughing, jumping up to hug her. “I was starting to think you’d gotten lost in your own pack.”
She waved a hand dismissively. “As if! I wouldn’t miss this for the world. Eighteen! Finally old enough to find your mate. Are you nervous?”
I shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. “A little. But mostly… excited. I’ve been waiting for this day forever.”
Her eyes sparkled. “I remember my eighteenth. Meeting him, My mate. I still remember that pull, like a jolt straight to my chest.” She laughed softly, shaking her head. “You’re going to feel it too. The instant you do, you’ll know.”
Elina found her mate last year. She wasn't eighteen but her mate was. He turned eighteen and realized that she was his mate. He tried to play it off until she turned eighteen but the mate bond was too strong. He ended up telling her and the rest is history.
"You’ll find him soon", Emily whispered in my head, sensing my Tracy’s excitement. "And when you do… be ready".
I glanced around my room, feeling the familiar hum of my wolf’s presence intertwined with my own anticipation. “I hope I’m ready,” I murmured. “I don’t want to mess this up.”
"Mess it up"? Emily scoffed. "You won’t. Just don’t run from the pull when it comes".
The morning drifted on in a blur of laughter, teasing, and gifts. My best friend was insistent on recounting every detail of her experience meeting her mate, emphasizing the intensity, the undeniable bond, and the way the world suddenly felt sharper and more alive once you connected. I listened, half in awe, half in daydreams about who my mate could be.
“You’re going to have your own story soon,” she said, nudging me. “And I’ll be right here to celebrate every second of it.”
I smiled, letting her words sink in. Emily twined around my nerves like a warm current. "And I’ll be here too", she reminded me. "Feeling, sensing, ready".
As the sun climbed higher, spilling light across the pack grounds outside, I couldn’t stop the thrill that surged in me. Tomorrow was my birthday celebration, but today, today was the calm before the storm, the quiet moment before destiny began to stir.
I closed my eyes and let my wolf whisper in my mind one last time. "Soon, very soon, everything will change. Are you ready for it"?
“I’ll be ready,” I answered, my heart pounding with hope and curiosity. “I can’t wait.”
And with that, I let myself drift into the day, unaware that the world I knew was on the brink of transformation, one that would lead me straight into the arms of fate, and the mate I was destined to meet.
