Lily turned and screamed into her pillow as she came hard on her fingers. Sweaty and tired she prayed for sleep. Her hunger for Trent riding her hard. This was her third orgasm.
"God I wish I had followed Trent back to his room. It might have been ok," Lily thought. Lying there by herself, she never felt more alone. Today she had gotten a glimpse of a normal life. She went on a date with a boy she liked. Not really a boy, but she felt like she was back in high school. She got to make out with him and a little more. He even told her how much he liked her.
Lily would have thought that Trent would be over her by now. She was not prepared for the level of hunger he seemed to have for her. He couldn't seem to stand being away from her and she felt the same. What did that mean?
"Probably nothing stupid, he just needs to get laid." Lily berated herself for imagining that she meant anything more than an easy lay. If only she didn't have to worry about her sisters. Didn't have to worry about endangering Trent, she could tell him what she really was. Let him make the choice to stay with her or not. But it was useless. She needed to stop worrying about things she couldn't control.
When Lily first came back to her hotel room she was bombarded with questions about her day by Mara and Sophia.
"Are you okay? Was it everything you wanted?" Sophia asks. She is dying to know how Lily handled herself with the alpha. She came back to the room a virgin. So that was a good start.
"It was amazing. He made me feel special and secure. Like no one else on Earth existed," Lily beamed.
Lily gives the details of her day. She leaves out the naughty bits in the hotel. That memory is for her alone. It will keep her warm for many nights. She ends with the wedding rehearsal.
"His friends are really sweet. The bride was gorgeous. You should have seen her red hair. Mara you would have loved it. You have a thing for gingers", Lily laughed.
"Yeah I do, something about a red beard drives me crazy!" Mara squealed.
"You're such a weirdo."
"But you love me anyway." Mara could tell that Lily was holding something back. She felt terrible for what her sister had to go through. Lily didn't ask for any of it. She didn't choose to be born with such magic. The kind that others lusted after. She was innocent. Mara had promised their parents to protect her before they died. Mara hated that she wasn't strong enough to protect Lily from this hurt.
"If you were having such a good time, why did you come back so early?" Sophia asked.
Lily went to answer and then paused. They had to leave for some reason.
"Umm. I think Trent needed to do something. No that's not right. I needed... No. A woman was there I think but she wanted Trent to stay."
"Lily you're not making any sense. What woman?" Mara asked.
"I don't know. It's weird, the harder I try to remember the more vague the memory becomes. I actually don't know why we left. But my head is all over the place. I can barely think straight."
Lily plops down on the couch. Sophia and Mara sat on the floor at her feet, wrapped in cozy blankets.
"Lily." Mara reached out and took Lily's chin in her hands. "Tell me how you really feel. Let the emotion out before it consumes you."
"I'm just...resolved. I hate what I have to do. Sad about what will never be. But then I was thinking. Somehow this might help Trent too. I have to believe that. If I can use my powers enough to finally control them. Maybe I can stop running and fight back."
"No Lily", Sophia counters. We've talked about that. No one has used these ancient magics in centuries. We can't even help you begin to learn. We're just trying to shield you so that you're not taken. We're simple. We grow things, we heal things, move energies. We meddle here and there. But we don't fight. We don't kill. The best you can hope for is stay hidden and try to live in peace. Nothing more."
"I know you believe that Sophia. But one day you won't be able to run anymore. Don't you want to know how to fight?" Lily questions.
"We did fight. We lost. Our parents lost. They would want us to survive. Don't undo everything we've done Lily. You don't have to be a hero." Sophia begs.
"You know what. Let's just take this one step at a time. The shielding." Lily just wanted this done. So she can begin mourning love lost.
'Yes. That's right." Mara interrupted."Born of blood and sacred magick. The joining of energies. It's time."
Lily, Mara, and Sophia had talked early into the morning. Helping Lily memorize the ancient words that must be spoken into the moment. Talking her through the pain and blood that would bind the magic. Not at all realizing that she was unprepared for the heartbreak to come.
Lily continued to lay wide awake close to dawn. Still begging for sleep.
***
A few floors up Trent lay awake staring at the moon. He left his balcony door open for the fresh breeze. His wolf was always restless in enclosed places. Knowing that his mate was nearby but out of reach made it worse. Trent could not believe how much the past few days had changed his life.
He thought that he was destined to live his life alone. A successful bachelor that could hop from bed to bed without a care. It was impossible for him to have a child with anyone but his mate and he didn't think he would ever have one. He never let himself get close to anyone because there was no point. He aged much slower than a normal human. He didn't want to get close to a woman just to watch her die.
It would be easy for him to find a mate if he were allowed to be around other shifters. But all of their kind had gone into hiding after they lost the war. Dark magic had corrupted their world. Turned good people into monsters. Made brothers enemies. People feared for their lives.
Then she came along. The leggy goddess with the mocha skin and green eyes. But there were problems. He was on uncharted territory. Trent had no idea what to do with a mate. Especially one that was kin. Especially one that was a virgin. If only he could talk to his father. But he was taken decades ago.
Trent sighed, running his fingers through his hair. He knew what he needed to do. There were other shifters that he kept in touch with for emergency purposes. Communication was kept to a minimum to prevent exposure. But this was important. This decision could change his whole life and he didn't want to f**k it up.
Trent rooted through his bag for this other cell phone. He always carried it with him. It was untraceable. He dialed the number. Hoping that his old friend hadn't forgotten him.
"Yeah?", came the gruff voice from the other end of the line.
"Hey old friend. Did the season end well?" Trent asked cryptically.
"The season ended right." Came the relieved reply. It was a code they learned long ago to know that they weren't calling under duress and that all was well. Trent had called Cyril. His closest and oldest friend. They hadn't spoken in almost 5 years but he had stayed away because he cared.
Cyril wasn't a shifter but something more ancient. His people were spoken of in fables and scary stories. Reduced to nothing more than blood-sucking rodents. But he was much more than that. Sure, he needed blood to survive but he was not related to any rodent and the sun didn't bother him.
Trent had to be careful. No names ever spoken. No locations. No magic.
“I need your help. I think I’ve met the one.” Silence on other end of the line.
“The one?” Cyril seemed unconvinced.
“Yes. THE ONE. Like until death. Bonded forever. That one.” Trent knew his friend understood and was only seeking to torture him. Mates were very rare and spoken of in jest. Neither one of them personally knew anyone with a mate who was still alive.
“s**t, that sucks!” Cyril choked out.
“f**k you!” Trent laughed good-naturedly. Knowing that his friend was teasing him. “But there’s a problem. She’s not kin.”
“Are you sure? That’s unheard of. She might be not be kin. But she’s got something extra I reckon. Watch yourself with that one.”
“What do you mean?” Cyril knew more about magic than Trent did. He was almost certain that he was trying to hint that the girl wasn’t completely human. But what else could she be?
“I mean there must be something in her that recognizes something in you. It don’t happen unless there’s something extra. Is she a beauty?” Glad Cyril was changing the subject, Trent took a moment to reflect on his Lily.
“Oh man. Are you joking? I’ve never seen a girl more beautiful. But it’s a natural beauty, come from within. When I first met her, she was all dressed up, gobs of make-up, tight dress, high heels….”
“The whole lot.” Cyril chuckled.
“Yeah man. The whole lot. But I could only see her eyes. They were magnets. I couldn’t look anywhere else. Later when I saw her without that stuff, curly hair and freckles… It was like she was even more beautiful to me without even trying. And she’s sweet and funny. Not to mention her smell. It’s the best part. The way she tastes…”
“Spare me. I get it. She’s tops. How long have you known her?”
“Almost three days?” Trent admitted sheepishly.
“Wow!” Cyril exclaims.
“I know. I know. But it’s the real deal. I’m certain of it. Can I go through with it? I’m afraid of hurting her.”
“I’m telling you. She might not be kin but something about her makes her strong enough to be with you. Trust your instincts. If she really is for you, you won’t be able to hurt her.”
“Thanks man. I wish you could come round.” Trent hated hiding what he was. Being separated from the only ones who did really know him.
“Maybe in a few years. Time to go. Trust yourself and guard your heart.” Cyril cautioned.
“Thanks my friend.” Closing the phone, Trent flopped back on the bed and fell into a fitful sleep.
