Chapter 3: Unexpected Encounters

531 Words
The first week at Ryder Media passed in a blur for Eva. Between the never-ending meetings, presentations, and trying to keep up with Rana’s relentless schedule, she barely had time to breathe. But somehow, she managed to avoid any major disasters—until Friday afternoon. She was in the break room, taking a much-needed coffee break, when she heard a deep, familiar voice behind her. “Ms. Sinclair.” Eva nearly spilled her coffee as she spun around to see Damien standing in the doorway. She hadn’t seen him since that nerve-wracking first day, and now, here he was, looking every bit as intimidating as before. “Mr. Ryder,” she stammered, trying to sound composed. He stepped into the room, his gaze sharp and focused as always. “How are you finding your first week?” Eva swallowed. “It’s… intense. But I’m managing.” There was a brief pause as Damien studied her, his expression unreadable. She wondered if he could tell how overwhelmed she was, but she wasn’t about to admit it. “You’ll find it gets easier,” he said finally, though his tone remained cool. Eva nodded, unsure what to say. She expected him to leave, but instead, he walked over to the counter, poured himself a cup of coffee, and leaned against the counter, his eyes on her the entire time. It was unnerving, the way he seemed so calm, so in control. She was the exact opposite—a bundle of nerves. “Do you enjoy working here?” he asked suddenly. The question caught her off guard. Did she enjoy it? She hadn’t really thought about it yet. She was too busy trying to survive. “I—yes,” she said after a moment, though her voice lacked conviction. Damien raised an eyebrow. “You don’t sound very convinced.” Eva let out a small laugh, trying to ease the tension. “It’s just a lot to take in. I’m still finding my footing.” He nodded, as if he understood. “It can be overwhelming at first. But if you’re willing to work hard, you’ll find your place.” His words were straightforward, but there was something almost reassuring in the way he said them. For a moment, she saw a different side of him—one that wasn’t quite so intimidating. “I’ll keep that in mind, thank you” she said with a small smile. Damien didn’t return the smile, but his stare was so intense. Eva felt really hot and uncomfortable and started fidgeting about and cupped her hot cup of coffee more tightly in her hands. There was a flicker of something in his eyes—something she couldn’t quite place. Then, without another word, and a curt nod he turned and walked out of the room, leaving her standing there, her heart racing for reasons she couldn’t fully explain. As the door swung shut behind him, Eva let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. What just happened? Why am i feeling so weird, and bothered. He is my boss, my boss. Whatever it was, she had a feeling this was only the beginning.
