Eva didn’t have much time to dwell on the tension between the brothers. The following days were a blur of meetings, deadlines, and new projects. But despite her efforts to focus on work, she couldn’t escape the feeling that things were getting more complicated by the day.
Alex continued to pop daily into the office, always finding an excuse to chat with her, and while his lighthearted presence was a welcome distraction, Eva couldn’t ignore the growing tension with Damien. Every time she spoke to Alex, Damien’s mood seemed to darken, his usual stoic demeanor cracking slightly at the edges. And everyone in the office seems to be bearing the brunt of it, she more than the others.
One evening, after staying late to finish a project, Eva found herself alone in the office with Damien once again. She was packing up her things when she heard his voice from the doorway.
“Eva.”
She turned, surprised to see him standing there, his expression unreadable as usual.
“Mr. Ryder?” she asked, her voice cautious.
He stepped into the room, his presence filling the space. There was a heaviness in the air between them, something unspoken that had been building for weeks.
“I’ve noticed you’ve been spending a lot of time with my brother,” Damien said, his voice low, measured.
Eva’s heart skipped a beat. “We’ve just had a few lunches together. It’s nothing serious.”
Damien’s jaw tightened slightly. “Be careful with Alex. He’s not as harmless as he seems.”
Eva frowned, confused. “What do you mean?”
Damien hesitated, as though weighing his words carefully. “He has a tendency to… complicate things. Especially when it comes to matters of business. And I don’t want you caught in the middle of whatever game he’s playing.”
Eva blinked, taken aback by the intensity in his voice. “I’m not caught in anything. We’re just—”
“You are,” Damien interrupted, his tone sharp. “Alex doesn’t do anything without a reason. He’s testing me, and you’re part of that.”
Eva’s breath caught in her throat. “Testing you? I don’t understand.”
Damien’s eyes darkened, his frustration evident. “It’s a long story. But trust me when I say that Alex’s involvement is never simple.
He enjoys stirring things up, especially when it comes to me.”
For a moment, Eva didn’t know what to say. The dynamic between the two brothers was far more complicated than she had realized, and now she was caught in the middle of it.
“I didn’t mean to cause any trouble,” she said softly.
Damien’s gaze softened slightly, and for the first time, she saw a flicker of vulnerability in his eyes. “I know. But just… be careful. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”
Eva’s heart skipped a beat. There was something in his tone—something protective, almost possessive—that made her chest tighten.
“I’ll be careful,” she promised, her voice barely above a whisper.
For a long moment, they stood there in the quiet office, the weight of unspoken words hanging between them. And then, without another word, Damien turned and left, leaving Eva with a whirlwind of emotions she didn’t know how to process.
Damien's POV
He didn’t like the way his brother smiled at her. He didn't like that they go for lunches together. He didn't like that she was smiling at him. And he didnt know what to do with this myriad of emotions running through him.
Damien watched from the corner of the room, pretending to be focused on the conversation with Rana, but his eyes kept drifting back to Eva and Alex. Their laughter echoed softly through the office, that effortless charm of Alex wrapping her in a bubble of lightheartedness. It grated on Damien more than he cared to admit.
It was stupid. Ridiculous, even. Eva was an employee, and he had no business caring who she spent her time with. But there was something about the way Alex acted around her that made Damien’s chest tighten with a frustration he hadn’t felt in years.
This wasn’t just about business anymore.
Alex had always been his little brother, the playful, carefree sibling who skated through life without a care. But this—this was different. Damien had built his company with discipline and hard work, keeping emotions tightly locked away where they belonged.
Alex had no such boundaries. He stirred up chaos with a grin, always one step away from trouble, and now he was pulling Eva into his orbit.
And that thought—it burned Damien in ways he couldn’t fully understand. He didn't want to acknowledge it, but the truth gnawed at him. It wasn’t just annoyance that Alex was interfering with his work life.
He was jealous.
Jealous of the ease with which Alex could make Eva laugh. Jealous of how, when Alex leaned in close to tell her something, she didn’t pull back, but leaned in, too. And most of all, jealous that despite all of Damien’s success, he still couldn’t figure out how to act around her without messing things up.
Damien turned his attention back to the conversation with Rana, forcing himself to focus on the numbers and projections she was discussing. But his thoughts were far from the meeting. All he could think about was Eva—how she had been slowly but surely dismantling the walls he had carefully built around himself.
Eva's POV
The days that followed were a blur of mixed signals. Damien’s warning about Alex weighed heavily on her, but at the same time, Alex had never given her a reason to distrust him. He was kind, fun, and unpredictable in a way that kept her on her toes. Yet, every time she thought about Damien’s intensity, her heart twisted in confusion.
On a Friday afternoon, Damien called her into his office. The atmosphere was tense, his desk cluttered with papers as he reviewed a stack of contracts. He barely glanced at her as she entered, but she could feel the weight of his presence.
“You wanted to see me?” Eva asked, standing awkwardly by the door.
“Close the door,” Damien said without looking up.
She did as he asked, the sound of the latch clicking into place louder than it should have been. When she turned back to face him, he had finally looked up, his dark eyes studying her with an intensity that made her stomach flutter.
“About Alex,” Damien began, his voice measured. “I don’t want to make things awkward, but it’s important you understand. He’s good at drawing people in, making them feel special. But his loyalty… it’s not as reliable as you might think.”
Eva frowned, unsure how to respond. “Are you trying to warn me off him? Because if you are—”
“I’m not,” Damien interrupted, standing up and walking around the desk to face her more directly. “I’m trying to make sure you don’t get caught up in something you don’t fully understand. Alex isn’t just my brother—he’s complicated.”
Eva crossed her arms, suddenly feeling defensive. “You’re both complicated.”
Damien’s expression softened slightly, his frustration giving way to something deeper. “You’re right. I am. But at least with me, you know what you’re dealing with.”
She shook her head, taking a step back. “No, I don’t. I don’t understand you at all, Damien. One minute, you’re distant and cold, and the next, you’re… this.”
“This?”
“Protective. Like you care, but you won’t admit it.”
Damien’s jaw tightened, and for a long moment, neither of them spoke. The tension between them was thick, crackling in the air like static. Finally, he stepped closer, his eyes searching hers.
“I do care, Eva,” he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. “More than I should.”
Her breath caught in her throat, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to fade away. There was only Damien—his presence overwhelming, his confession hanging in the air between them like a fragile thread.
But before she could respond, the door to the office swung open, and Alex strolled in with his usual carefree grin.
“Interrupting something?” he asked, his eyes flicking between them with obvious amusement.
Damien’s expression hardened instantly, the vulnerability vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. He took a step back, his posture stiffening. “We’re done here.”
Eva glanced between the two brothers, her heart pounding. The tension between them was palpable, and she was standing right in the middle of it.
