Chapter 1
He Said I Faked My Pregnancy, So He Forced Me to Lose His Child
1
After seven years together, Jeffery Shepherd and I broke up for good.
After we called off our engagement, I unexpectedly found out that I was three months pregnant.
This day, I went to the hospital for a prenatal checkup. With a cold expression, Jeffery stopped me.
"Bold move. Trying to use a baby to claw your way back up?"
Then I pulled my marriage certificate out of my bag and said calmly, "Look closely. I'm married. This isn't your child."
He stared at my belly like he wanted to tear me apart.
"The child is my husband's. I'm already married. You don't have to worry that I'll cling to you."
I was brought up in the Shepherd Family, and we grew up side by side. At eighteen, after a drunken night, we had s*x. And for years after, I stayed by his side as his fiancée.
But half a year ago, a new designer named Hailey Brown joined the company.
After that, Jeffery started staying out all night.
Furious, I stormed into his office to demand an explanation and walked in on him embracing Hailey.
That scene was like a sharp knife, digging into my already bleeding heart.
We grew up together, and we were in love for seven years. I couldn't understand why he would do this.
At that time, I had just found out I was pregnant. Foolishly, I tried to use it to win back our love.
I told him about the pregnancy. Instead, he thought I had bribed the doctor to falsely claim I was pregnant just to hold onto my position as his fiancée, refusing to let him and Hailey have their happiness.
He angrily threw me out of the car, and, regardless of the heavy rain outside, left me on the highway. I lay in the pouring rain for two hours until I miscarried.
After that day, I finally came to my senses.
Looking back, that absurd, self-destructive love already felt like a lifetime ago.
Jeffery had always been a campus legend back in school. Brilliant in class, unstoppable on the court—he had every girl wrapped around his finger, me included.
Every time I thought about how that dazzling, brilliant boy was going to be my future husband, I'd wake up in the middle of the night grinning like an i***t.
I loved Jeffery so much. So much so that when I was eighteen and we first had s*x, I believed we would become the closest people in the world from then on.
It never once crossed my mind that to him, I was just a burden his family had forced on him.
After my miscarriage, I asked him why he had suddenly changed—whether everything between us over all those years had been a lie.
He hesitated for a long time before finally confessing to me for the first time. "Evelyn, I accepted you only because of my grandfather's request. Because your parents died saving my parents, but why should I sacrifice my happiness to repay their kindness?"
I froze.
I just wanted to ask him, "You're right, why should you?"
Even as I understood where he was coming from, I suddenly felt overwhelmingly wronged. I had never known that he had been with me because he was forced by his grandfather.
Since he had always resented this engagement arranged for us as children, why didn't he say so earlier?
Why did he let me fall so deeply in love with him before revealing this cruel truth?
After my heart died, I no longer hesitated. I went straight to David Shepherd, Jeffery's grandfather, and asked him to help us dissolve the engagement.
The Shepherds valued deep bonds.
Even though Jeffery and I broke off our engagement, David had been kind to me since I was a child and had always been there for me.
He knew I had loved Luminara since I was young, and that I had only stayed in this country for Jeffery, so he specifically asked people to find eligible bachelors in Luminara for me to go on dates with.
From hundreds of dating profiles, I picked out the man who was now my husband.
Once I finished this project today, I could go to Luminara and settle down there with Jason.
