Chapter1 -BLOOD IN THE MOONLIGHT
SERAPHINA’S POV
I could feel my feet scrape against the floor, my toes digging into the dirt of the soil, my heart pounding inside my chest.
The voices were growing closer, my heart racing with every step I took.
I need to get out of here
I grip my dress as I storm through the forest, and the voices are deeper and more violent.
Don’t Look Back
I tell myself, as I keep running.
I had no idea what was coming after me. Human or Beast?
The voices turned into growls, and their feet against the ground increased in intensity.
What had I gotten myself into?
My dress gets stuck in a tree branch as I struggle to let go.
The dirty soil is getting harder as I run.
This was it. The day I die.
This wasn’t supposed to happen. A fun picnic turned into a blood bath.
Moments from earlier suddenly flash in my head.
************
One Hour Earlier…..
‘Seraphina, I hope you are having a good time.’ My best friend's boyfriend, Jace, says as he nudges my arm, a huge smile on his face, as he arranges the picnic baskets on the ground.
We were having a mini get-together; it was my best friend’s birthday. Caitlyn turned 23 today, and she wanted to be with us one last time before she travelled to New York for her Master's program.
She has always dreamed of being a marine biologist, so when she received mail from NYU letting her know that she had gotten into the program, I was more than proud of her.
I turn to face Jace and say, ‘Would have been so much better if I weren’t in charge of organizing.’
Caitlyn overhears me and turns to give me an annoying look ‘That’s the only thing you are good at, Sera.’
I raise my middle finger at her and flash her a look of disgust.
I go back to arranging the snacks and fruits I brought. My spread looked nice as usual.
The vanilla whipped cream cheese cake sat nicely on the hardwood board alongside the chopped mango slices and the strawberry serving.
The red and green grapes glistened in the late afternoon sun, lying beautifully beside the bits of biscuits and baguettes.
Caitlyn hands me two glasses of white wine, and I carefully place them on my board.
Viola!
‘See, I told you this was your thing,’ She says with a laugh. ‘Want to help me with the rest of the boards ?’
‘Like I could say no if I wanted to’
She rolls her eyes, and I rise to my feet.
Jace was still seated on the ground, still placing his snacks on his board.
Yeah, that doesn’t look right.
‘You know what, Sera, ’ Caitlyn adds, ‘Why don’t you go ahead with the other boards while I help Jace fix his board?’
I’m sure he wants you to fix other things.
Jace had that evil smirk plastered on his face.
‘Whatever, love birds, ’ I say with a dull tone.
I doubt they heard any of that.
I walk away, leaving them to the heated make-out session they had going on.
A very good day to be a third wheel
I’ve never wanted to be in a relationship, but Caitlyn and Jace had one of the best ones I'd seen.
Sometimes it makes me crave being in one.
I walk over to the shed where the rest of the boards where.
Then I hear a sharp cry.
My heart skips a beat.
Caitlyn?
I run back to the picnic area.
My sandals were slipping off my feet as I made my way back.
I stand in horror.
The picnic boards and snacks were scattered around the ground, and the blankets were torn into pieces.
That wasn’t the worst part of the sight that was right before me.
Caitlyn and Jace lay lifeless, their organs sitting outside their bodies, blood pooling around them.
I place my hand over my mouth as tears roll down my cheeks.
That’s when I hear the sounds..…
I was being watched.
I didn’t know who, but I could feel it.
The sun was no longer as hot as it was; I felt a sudden chill run through my spine.
The sky was dark and gloomy.
I could swear I had seen a bit of red.
Run
An unfamiliar voice fills my head.
Now I could hear the sounds of footsteps approaching.
I was going to be next. They were coming for me.
I turn around quickly, my feet leading me to the unknown.
There had to be a way out.
An escape
I will not die, not today.
SERAPHINA VALE, YOU WILL LIVE.
****The Present****
My feet were starting to hurt.
Whatever it was that had killed Caitlyn and Jace wasn’t human.
It couldn’t be.
No human could have done that. I had seen enough animal attacks to know this was one of them.
A bear?
This place wasn’t known to have bears.
I pause as I stare at the large tree right in front of me.
This tree, I had seen before.
I look around the forest, my eyes feeling heavy.
My eyes landed on the ground, spotting paw prints as they led towards the tree.
I follow the prints, then pause.
This wasn’t the way out.
I take a second look at the paw prints on the ground.
These paw prints could only mean one thing….
The sound of a tree branch breaking fills the air.
I tried to turn around, and that’s when I felt it.
A huge s***h down my back.
WOLVES.
************
‘Do you think she would have survived that ?’ A deep voice utters.
My eyes were still shut as I slowly regained consciousness.
I could feel the cold wind against my bare back.
My dress was cut open, and pain filled my body as I tried to hold back tears.
The last thing I wanted was to be seen alive.
‘I don’t think so,’ Another voice says.
Two men?
Humans did this?
‘She better not be, she almost went into the pack house.’ The first voice says, ‘She wouldn’t last a second if she got in.’
‘’What are we going to do with her body ?’’ the second voice says ‘ We can’t leave it here, we don’t want any humans coming close to our territory.’
I hear a sharp sound in my ears, and the ground beneath me starts to shake.
‘Do you hear that ?’ One of the men says.
‘What the actual f-’
I feel my body levitating off the ground.
The ground tore open beneath me, moonlit runes flaring to life.
A sudden burst of energy pulses through my veins.
I had no idea what was happening, but it felt powerful.
Dreadful but familiar.
The ground shook with so much ferocity.
Out of all the ways to die, my fate chose this one?
My blood had slowly absorbed into the soil.
‘It can’t be what I think this is,’ One of the men says.
‘We need to tell Boss, ’ the other says, ‘Something tells me that he is not going to like the look of this.’
The runes burned brighter, casting an eerie glow over my torn dress.
The men look shocked as they step back away from me.
I hovered above the cracked earth, my body limp, my blood glowing silver as it seeped into the soil like an offering.
Then the air shifted.
Something ancient… awakened.
From deep beneath the ground, a howl erupted.
Not just any howl, this one sounded angry. Wild. Familiar.
The two men backed away, their voices trembling.
“Tell the Alpha,” one whispered. “She’s not just a human...”
“No,” the other murmured. “She’s the prophecy.”
My eyes flew open, glowing the same silver as the runes pulsing beneath me.
And I screamed.
