Fate in the Forest

Ariella had always considered the forest a familiar place. She gathered herbs there almost every day, and the whisper of the wind through the leaves felt like a language she had learned over the years. But walking through it now with Kael felt different. Every sound seemed sharper. Every rustle felt like a warning. The memory of the strange wolf from earlier refused to leave her mind. Kael stayed close beside her, quiet and alert. He walked with the focus of someone who had spent his whole life expecting danger. Ariella watched him from the corner of her eye, still taking in the truth he had revealed. A Starborn. A living legend. And the magic that had reacted to her… she still could not understand what that meant. Kael noticed her staring. What is it? I am still trying to understand everything, Ariella admitted. Yesterday, you were just the quiet boy who visited the market. Today you are… this. He smiled faintly. I am still the quiet boy, I promise. The rest is just a part of me I have learned to hide. She looked down at her hands, remembering the strange glow that had surrounded them when he touched her. Kael, has your magic ever reacted to anyone before? Never, he said. And it should not have reacted to you either. That is what scares me. A chill went through her. She wanted to ask more, but the forest suddenly grew silent. Birds stopped singing. Even the breeze paused, as if the trees themselves were holding their breath. Kael stopped walking. Stay close to me. Ariella moved instantly. Kael’s posture changed; every muscle was tight and ready. Ariella followed his gaze, scanning the trees, but she saw nothing. Kael whispered, Something is watching us. They waited. Seconds passed, like minutes. Then a branch snapped somewhere behind them. Kael grabbed her hand and pulled her into the shade of a thick oak tree. Do not move. Ariella pressed against the rough bark, her heart pounding. She could hear footsteps now. Not light ones. Heavy. Slow. Too deliberate to be an animal. Kael leaned toward her and whispered, If something happens, run toward the river. Do not look back. I am not leaving you, she whispered back. You will if I tell you to. The footsteps grew nearer. Ariella held her breath. A dark figure emerged between the trees, tall and covered in thick armor. Its face was hidden behind a mask shaped like a snarling animal. Kael tensed. A Shadow Guard, he muttered under his breath. Ariella had heard rumors about them. Soldiers who served the darker corners of the kingdom. Silent. Deadly. Loyal to no crown except the one that promised power. The masked figure stepped forward and spoke in a hollow voice. Starborn. Reveal yourself. Ariella felt Kael’s hand tighten around hers. The figure knew what he was. That alone was enough to terrify her. Kael stepped slightly in front of her. You have no place in these woods. The guard lifted his head as if smelling the air. The Starborn bloodline should not be here. Yet I sense it. Stronger than expected. Kael raised his hand, and light flickered faintly around his fingertips. Leave. Now. The guard drew a long blade that glistened with black metal. Ariella had never seen anything like it. There was something wrong about the way it reflected the light. Almost as if it absorbed it. The Shadow Guard charged. Kael pushed Ariella back as he threw up a burst of light. The two forces collided, sending a shockwave through the trees. Ariella stumbled but caught herself on a root. Kael fell to one knee, breathing hard. Ariella rushed toward him. Kael, are you alright? Stay back, he warned, fighting to stand again. The guard advanced steadily, hardly affected by Kael’s blast. Kael gritted his teeth and raised his hand again, summoning another flare of light, but it flickered weakly, as though something was draining his strength. Ariella’s panic rose. Kael could not win like this. She looked around desperately for anything she could use. A branch, a stone, anything. The guard reached Kael in two long steps. Ariella screamed, Kael! The guard swung his blade, but Kael managed to dodge, though barely. The blade sliced a deep mark into the tree instead. Kael stumbled again, his face pale. Ariella acted without thinking. She grabbed a thick piece of fallen wood and ran toward the guard. She swung it with all the strength she had, hitting him across the back of the head. The wood snapped in half, but the force made the guard stagger forward. Ariella gasped. She expected him to ignore her completely. Instead, he turned toward her slowly, the hollow mask facing her. A girl, he said. The one who awakened the Starborn magic. Ariella froze. How did he know? Kael forced himself between them. Do not touch her. The guard raised his blade again. Kael shouted something in a language Ariella had never heard. Suddenly, the surrounding air exploded with light far brighter than before. The guard was thrown back violently, crashing into a tree with a metallic thud. Silence returned to the forest. Ariella stood frozen, breathing hard. Kael swayed, his knees buckling. She ran to him and caught his arm before he collapsed. Kael, talk to me. Are you hurt? He shook his head weakly. The magic used too much energy. I pushed past my limit. Ariella helped him sit down against a tree. His skin felt cold, and his breathing was uneven. For the first time since she met him, he looked fragile. Thank you for helping me, he said softly. That was reckless but brave. Ariella tried to smile. I could say the same about you. Kael’s eyes drifted to the fallen guard. He will not stay down for long. We need to leave. Ariella swallowed hard. The thought of that terrifying figure waking again made her stomach twist. Can you walk? I will manage. With Ariella supporting him, Kael stood. Together they moved deeper into the forest, away from the battle site. Ariella felt Kael leaning on her more than he admitted, his steps heavy and unsteady. For a long time, neither of them spoke. Finally, Kael said quietly, That was not a random attack. Someone knows I am alive. Someone sent the guard for me. And maybe… for you. Ariella felt her blood turn cold. What does that mean, Kael? It means we are out of time. Something dangerous is coming. And we need answers before it finds us. He looked at her with the same seriousness as before. Ariella… our lives changed the moment our hands touched. And now we have to figure out why. Ariella nodded slowly. Fear tightened her chest, but she did not want to let go of him. She felt the pull again, the strange connection she could not explain. Whatever happens, she said, I am with you. Kael looked at her with something soft and grateful in his eyes. Then we face this together. They continued walking deeper into the forest, unaware that from the shadows, something else was watching them. Something far more ancient than the guard. Something that recognized the spark now growing between them. Something that had been waiting for it.
