Chapter 1
ANITA’S POV
A tear drop falls to the paper I was holding in my shaky hands, the words DIVORCE PAPERS boldly written at the top.
I still couldn’t believe what was going on, I can’t wrap my head around this whole thing.
It wasn’t true, I was just imagining things. Jason would never do that to me.
You were never good enough Nita
You have no right to speak to her that way! You don’t possess the kind of standards that she has!
You would be nothing without me Anita.
His words ring in my head, my hands flying to my ears as the events once again replay in front of me.
FLASHBACK
I park the car Jason had got for me in the company’s garage and I clamber out of it with a smile.
I had decided to surprise him today and I wanted to go to lunch with my husband.
Being home alone could be so exhausting and boring sometimes, but it was what Jason wanted, saying he didn’t want to stress over work, that he preferred to take care of me.
It brings a smile to my face anytime I think about our moments together. Jason is the only man in my life and I want to keep it that way forever.
I walk through the company’s lobby, walking towards the private elevator my husband uses, feeling slightly nervous as a wide grin refuses to leave my face.
I couldn’t wait to surprise him. I take a peek inside the little bag I had got for him, the gift I had bought for him carefully places in the little box resting in the bag and I knew he was going to love it.
Gifting a man who has everything already, might be the hardest thing to do, especially if that person happens to be your husband.
But anytime I make such complaints, Jason is sweet about it and would usually say I am the best gift he could ever have.
Thinking of that, just brought a smile to my face.
The elevator bell dings again as the doors open, I step out of the enclosed space, heading to my husband’s office, I knew I didn’t have to knock because I would be ruining the surprise if he heard my voice first.
I walk Into the office and my eyes widen at the sight in front of me. The bag in my hand falls to the ground on it’s own accord.
“Jason” I mutter, unable to find my voice. He separates his lips from the strange woman’s… sitting on his lap as I blink rapidly, trying to make sense of the situation.
“What are you doing here Nita?” He frowns, adjusting his stance on his seat, making sure the woman was sitting comfortably on his lap.
“What is happening?” I ask, still unable to find my voice.
“What does it look like?” He asks, standing to his feet as he rounds his table, walking towards me. He showed no remorse whatsoever as he closed the distance between us
“I’ll make this easy for you Nita. You were never good enough. You were just some liability in my house and I needed to find myself a better woman. One that would be fit to be by my side” He states, pushing his hands into his pockets.
“What?” I blurt, I was still yet to understand this whole thing.
Jason is cheating on me with that lady sitting on his chair right now. Is that it?
“You heard him right” Her high pitched voice interrupts us and I throw daggers with my eyes.
“I am not talking to you weasel!” I raise my voice
“You have no right to speak to her that way! You don’t possess the kind of standards that she has!” Jason raises his voice at me, practically startling me.
“Jason, how could you do this to me?” I whimper and he rolls his eyes.
“Go back home Anita, we can talk about it when I get home, right now, as you can see, I am very busy” He states, turning around casually.
“I would no longer be there when you get home! You can sign the divorce papers instead!” I raise my voice, trying to sound defiant.
A bitter laugh rings through the space as he turns back around to face me, taking purposeful steps towards me before he speaks again.
“You would be nothing without me Anita”
END OF FLASHBACK
I stare at the bag I had packed in the corner, picking up the pen with shaky hands and signing the divorce papers.
Just as I drop the pen, the room door opens and Jason walks in, looking between the bag and me.
“I see that you have packed your things” He states nodding thoughtfully as he ignores my tear patched face.
“Leave and never come back” He states.
In an hour, I am standing in front of my uncle’s house, where my family lived. I didn’t come from the best of backgrounds and I still had to take care of my family. My mom, my little brother and my little sister.
I have had to cater for them for the past few years and it got easier when I married Jason. But now all of that was gone.
I had called my Mom on the way here and she had told me to come home and that she would make me some soup.
I rushed into my mother’s arms as I stepped into the house, the tears flowing freely as I cried.
“I didn’t do anything wrong Mom, I promise” I cry on her shoulder.
“It’s okay…. Baby, it’s alright….I believe you” She mutters softly, tightening her arms around me.
“He cheated on me Mom, he cheated and insulted me and he showed no remorse!” I wail into my mom’s shoulder.
“It’s alright baby”
“I don’t want to go back. I swear I am never going back to that sorry excuse of a man!” I raise my voice as my Mom pats my back.
Even if it’s the last thing on earth, I would never go back to him.
