CHAPTER THREE

887 Words
As Lena walked out of the hotel, she couldn't stop replaying the events of the past few days in her mind. She had been so close to uncovering the truth about Nicholas's business empire, but now it seemed like all her hard work had gone to waste. Feeling defeated, Lena decided to take a break from her investigation and clear her head. She went on a long hike in the mountains and spent some time reflecting on her life and career. As she reached the summit, Lena felt a sense of clarity wash over her. She realized that she had been too focused on the end goal and had forgotten why she became a journalist in the first place - to uncover the truth and hold people accountable for their actions. With renewed determination, Lena decided to continue her investigation, but this time, she would approach it differently. Instead of trying to sneak around and gather evidence on her own, she would try to get someone on the inside to help her. After some digging, Lena found a former employee of Nicholas's company who was willing to talk to her. The employee revealed some shocking information about Nicholas's business practices, including illegal dealings and shay partnerships. Armed with this information, Lena knew that she had enough evidence to write a story that would expose Nicholas and bring him to justice. But she also knew that she had to be careful. Nicholas was a powerful man, and he wouldn't take kindly to being exposed. The next morning, Lena woke up to the sound of her phone ringing. Groggily, she picked it up and saw that it was her editor at the newspaper. "Good morning, Lena," the editor said. "I just wanted to congratulate you on your article. It's incredible, and it's already getting a lot of attention. I think you might have just won the Pulitzer." Lena couldn't believe it. After all the hard work and setbacks, she finally made a breakthrough. She thanked her editor and hung up, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. But her joy was short-lived. As she was getting dressed, there was a loud knock on her door. Lena hesitated for a moment, wondering if it could be Nicholas or someone from his company. She cautiously opened the door and saw two men standing outside. They introduced themselves as FBI agents and asked to speak with her. Lena's heart raced as she let them in. They explained that they had received a tip about Nicholas's illegal activities and were conducting an investigation. Lena realized that her article had finally caught up with Nicholas and that he was being held accountable for his actions. She couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction, knowing that she had played a part in bringing him down. As the FBI agents left, Lena collapsed onto her couch, feeling a mix of emotions. She was relieved that justice was being served, but she also knew that her life would never be the same. Lena spent the next few weeks in a whirlwind of interviews and press conferences. Her article had gained national attention, and people were eager to hear more about the investigation into Nicholas's business empire. As she navigated the newfound attention, Lena found herself reflecting on her journey. She had always been driven and passionate about her work, but the events of the past few months had taken her to a whole new level. Lena also found herself thinking about the man who had started it all - Nicholas. Despite his criminal actions, Lena couldn't deny that there had been a connection between them. She wondered what would have happened if she had met him under different circumstances. But she knew that those thoughts were dangerous and quickly pushed them aside. Nicholas was a criminal, and he deserved to be punished for his actions. One day, as Lena was leaving a press conference, she saw a familiar face in the crowd - Nicholas. He was being led away in handcuffs, and Lena couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness. She wondered what had led him to a life of crime and if things could have been different for him. Despite the intense media attention and the FBI investigation, Lena tried to maintain some sense of normalcy in her life. She went back to her job at the newspaper and continued to report on the issues that mattered to her. But she couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. As much as she loved her work, she couldn't deny that her encounter with Nicholas had left an impact on her. One day, as Lena was walking to her car after work, she saw a familiar car parked on the street - Nicholas's black Ferrari. Her heart raced as she approached the car, wondering if he was inside. But as she got closer, she saw that the driver's seat was empty. There was, however, a note on the dashboard addressed to her. Lena hesitated for a moment before opening the note. It read, "Meet me at the pier tonight at 8 pm. I need to talk to you." Lena's mind raced as she tried to make sense of the situation. Was this a trap? A setup? Or was Nicholas trying to reach out to her?
