CHAPTER FIVE

1964 Words
The next day, Nicholas took Lena out to dinner at a fancy restaurant. The conversation was light, and Lena found herself laughing and enjoying the evening despite her initial reservations. As they walked back to the car, Nicholas suddenly grabbed her hand and pulled her into a dark alleyway. Lena's heart raced as she looked around, wondering what was happening. "We have to go," Nicholas said urgently, pulling her along behind him. Lena could hear footsteps behind them, and she knew that they were in danger. As they reached the end of the alleyway, they saw a group of men waiting for them. Nicholas quickly pulled out a gun and fired, forcing the men to retreat. Lena stood frozen, unable to believe what was happening. "Come on," Nicholas said, grabbing her hand and pulling her along. "We have to get out of here." They ran back to the car, but as they drove away, Lena could hear the sound of police sirens in the distance. "What's going on?" Lena asked, her voice shaking. "I don't know," Nicholas said, his eyes focused on the road ahead. "But we have to get out of here before they catch us." Lena couldn't believe what had just happened. She turned to Nicholas, her eyes wide with fear. "What are we going to do?" she asked, her voice shaking. Nicholas kept his eyes on the road, his expression unreadable. "We have to lay low for a while," he said. "Maybe leave the city until things calm down." Lena nodded, still in shock. "But where will we go?" "I have a friend who can help us," Nicholas said. "He owes me a favour. We can stay with him for a while until things blow over." Lena didn't respond, her mind racing with questions. She had never imagined herself in a situation like this. But deep down, she knew that she had no choice but to trust Nicholas. As they drove, Lena couldn't help but feel a strange sense of freedom. For the first time in her life, she was truly living in the moment, with no idea what the future would hold. Nicholas must have sensed her apprehension because he reached over and took her hand. "Don't worry," he said. "I'll protect you." Lena looked at him, her heart racing. Despite everything that had happened, she couldn't deny the way that he made her feel. She knew that she was falling for him, and she didn't know how to stop it. As they settled into the cabin, Nicholas disappeared into another room to make a phone call. Lena sat on the edge of the bed, feeling uneasy about their situation. After a few moments, Nicholas emerged from the other room. "We have a problem," he said, his voice tense. "What is it?" Lena asked, her heart racing. Nicholas sat down next to her. "I just got off the phone with my contact. It seems that the men who attacked us last night were hired by a rival businessman who wants to take me out of the picture." Lena's eyes widened in shock. "What does that mean?" "It means that we're not safe here," Nicholas said. "We have to keep moving, keep changing our location until we can figure out what to do next." Lena felt a sense of panic rising in her chest. She had never been in a situation like this before, and she didn't know if she was strong enough to handle it. Nicholas seemed to sense her far because he reached over and took her hand. "We'll get through this," he said. "Together." Lena looked at him, her heart racing. Despite everything, she couldn't deny the way that he made her feel. She knew that she was falling for him, and she didn't know how to stop it. As they packed their bags and prepared to leave the cabin, Lena couldn't help but wonder what the future held. She didn't know if they would make it out of this alive, but she knew that she would do anything to protect Nicholas. Nicholas pressed his foot down on the accelerator, his eyes scanning the road ahead. He knew that they had to get as far away as possible before their pursuers caught up to them. Lena sat beside him, her knuckles white as she clutched the door handle. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest as they weaved in and out of traffic, their car barely missing other vehicles. As they rounded a bend in the road, they saw a police checkpoint up ahead. Nicholas knew that they couldn't afford to stop, but there was no way to turn around. "We have to go through," he said, his voice calm but urgent. Lena nodded her heart in her throat. She watched as Nicholas slowed the car down and rolled down the window. "Good evening, officers," he said, his voice steady. "Is there a problem?" The officers shone a flashlight into the car, their eyes scanning the interior. "License and registration," one of them said. Nicholas fumbled in his pocket for his ID, his heart racing. Lena could see the fear in his eyes, but she also knew that he wouldn't give up without a fight. As the officers checked their documents, Lena held her breath. She could hear the sound of approaching sirens in the distance, and she knew that their time was running out. Finally, the officers handed back their documents and waved them through. Nicholas put his foot down on the accelerator once again, their car speeding away from the checkpoint. As they drove off into the night, Lena couldn't help but wonder how much longer they could keep this up. They had been on the run for what felt like an eternity, and she knew that they couldn't keep running forever. As they drove away from the police checkpoint, Lena turned to Nicholas with a worried expression on her face. "How much longer can we keep doing this, Nicholas?" she asked. "We can't keep running forever." Nicholas gritted his teeth, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. "We'll figure something out," he said, his voice determined. "I won't let them catch us." Lena nodded, but she knew that their options were limited. They were both wanted for crimes they didn't commit, and the authorities were closing in on them. "We have to clear our names," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "We need to find a way to prove that we're innocent." Nicholas nodded, his eyes focused on the road ahead. "I have a plan," he said. "But it's risky." Lena's heart skipped a beat. She knew that Nicholas was a man of action, but she also knew that his plans often came with a high degree of danger. "What is it?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. "We're going to break into the police station," he said, his voice low. "We'll find the evidence we need to clear our names and get out before they catch us." Lena's eyes widened in shock. Breaking into a police station was an insane idea, but at the same time, it was their best shot at getting out of this mess. "Okay," she said, her voice firm. "Let's do it." Nicholas and Lena drove through the night, their eyes scanning the roads for any sign of danger. They knew that the authorities were looking for them, and they couldn't afford to be caught. Suddenly, they saw a roadblock up ahead. Nicholas swerved to avoid it, but he lost control of the car and it spun out of control. The car came to a stop, and they both got out quickly. They saw the flashing lights of police cars in the distance, getting closer by the second. "We have to run," Nicholas said, grabbing Lena's hand. They took off, sprinting through the trees and bushes, the sound of police sirens ringing in their ears. They ran for what felt like hours, their hearts pounding in their chests. Finally, they reached a small abandoned cabin in the woods. "We can hide here," Nicholas said, pulling Lena inside. They barricaded the door and waited, listening to the sounds of the police searching the area. After what felt like an eternity, the sounds faded away. They waited a few more minutes before cautiously peeking out the window. "The coast is clear," Lena whispered. They stepped outside, the cool night air washing over them. But before they could take another step, they heard the sound of footsteps behind them. They turned around to see a figure emerging from the shadows, a gun pointed straight at them. The figure pulled the trigger, and Nicholas felt a searing pain in his shoulder. He fell to the ground, clutching the wound. Lena screamed and tried to run towards him, but the figure grabbed her, holding the gun to her head. "Stay back," the figure growled. "Or she dies." Nicholas struggled to his feet, trying to ignore the pain in his shoulder. He knew he had to do something to save Lena. He looked around frantically, searching for anything he could use as a weapon. His eyes fell on a large rock nearby, and he lunged towards it. The figure saw him coming and fired another shot, narrowly missing his head. Nicholas kept running, adrenaline pumping through his veins. He reached for the rock and picked it up, turning around to face the figure. Lena was still in his grasp, her eyes wide with fear. Nicholas threw the rock with all his might, hitting the figure square in the head. The figure stumbled backwards, dropping the gun. Nicholas ran towards Lena, grabbing her hand and pulling her towards the car. "Get in," he shouted, opening the door. They jumped in the car and Nicholas hit the gas pedal, speeding away from the scene. But as they drove away, Lena couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. She turned around, and her heart sank as she saw a line of police cars in hot pursuit. Nicholas and Lena were driving as fast as they could, trying to put as much distance as possible between themselves and the police. "We have to lose them," Nicholas said through gritted teeth. "How are we going to do that?" Lena asked, her voice shaking with fear. Nicholas took a deep breath. "I have an idea. Hold on tight." He swerved the car onto a dirt road and hit the gas pedal even harder. Lena held on for dear life as the car bounced and jolted over the rough terrain. Suddenly, Nicholas slammed on the brakes, skidding to a stop. Lena looked around, confused. "What are you doing?" she asked. "Get out of the car," Nicholas said, his voice urgent. Lena hesitated for a moment before following his lead. They both got out of the car and ran towards the nearby forest. "Why did we stop?" Lena asked, out of breath. Nicholas pulled her into a tight embrace. "We have to leave the car and run on foot. They'll never find us in the forest." They started running deeper into the woods, the sounds of police sirens and helicopters growing fainter in the distance. But as they ran, Lena couldn't shake the feeling that they were being followed. She turned around and saw a shadowy figure lurking in the trees behind them. "Nicholas, someone's following us!" she cried. Nicholas spun around, reaching for the gun in his pocket. But before he could use it, the figure stepped out of the shadows. It was the same figure from before - the one who had tried to kill them. "You thought you could get away from me?" the figure sneered. "You two are in for a world of hurt."
