Chapter 2: Time to snitch

1616 Words
Lucas I couldn’t believe Elena had allowed her loser boyfriend to push Anita like that. I don’t know what happened to her, but she had turned into a real b.itch. You’d think being triplets would make us close, but we weren’t. Maybe that was because we had different fathers, I don’t know, but me and Elena couldn’t stand each other. I hated how she treated Anita, especially in public. Anita was doing so much better these days, our stepmum Linda, had really helped with that. I liked her, she was nice, but as much as she had helped Anita and she was able to live much more independently, I was still crazy overprotective of her. She was so vulnerable and innocent, and I couldn’t stand the thought of anyone being horrible to her. I was telling our dad, Romulus, when I got home, I wasn’t one for snitching, but f***k Elena, I was sick of her bulls.hit. When college finished, I kissed my girlfriend Krystal goodbye and walked home. It was almost a half-hour walk. Usually I waited for one of our parents to pick us up, but Anita was craving more independence and wanted to live as an adult like the rest of us. She’d started walking home even though her dad, Jax, hated it. He was a dad to me too, but it got complicated if I went into all that, so I’ll just refer to him as her dad to keep it simple. Anita would be upset if she saw me, so I kept back behind the crowd of students leaving, and I followed her home to make sure she was safe. When we reached our place, I hung back for ten minutes before walking in so she wouldn’t know I followed her. “Hey buddy,” Fenris, who was my dad, said when I walked in. I looked at him with a raised eyebrow, and he asked, “what?” “Nothing, just shocked you’re not in your office.” “Just grabbing a snack, but if you think I’m spending too much time working and not enough time with you, I’ll make time, work can wait.” “It’s fine, Dad, I wasn’t hinting at anything,” I laughed. “You sure? I really wouldn’t mind.” “Dad, go, I’m tired and want to chill in my room anyway.” He looked at me a minute longer, making sure, and then he ruffled my hair and kissed the top of my head. He was the only one who could still do that to me, well, Mum too. The others knew they weren’t getting anywhere near me, I wasn’t a kid anymore. Pfft, I’m thinking that then Jax comes into the hallway when Dad leaves, and he grabs me into a buddy hug. “Cheers,” he murmured. “For what?” I asked, pushing him away. “I know you follow Anita home and make sure she gets back safe, so thanks.” I shrugged. “Sure.” “You know I love you, right?” He asked. I raised an eyebrow, it always weirded me the hell out when Jax, of all people, showed any sort of love or affection. He used to when we were little, but it stopped when I hit my teen years, probably my fault because I always ducked away from it. “Yeah,” I mumbled. “You sure? Sometimes I feel like you don’t like me much these days,” he said. That was new, Jax was the dad who never got emotional about anything. The fact he said that meant he was opening up and showing me some vulnerability. I dropped the teenage moody act and hugged him. “We’re good. I love you too, Dad.” “Good,” he grinned. Did I mention he was the local psychopath? A full-on serial killer? And if that wasn’t scary enough, he was also a werewolf. We all were, but he was the only one who killed because he enjoyed it, because he needed to. I didn’t know all the details, but I figured it out for myself when a friend of mine from another pack showed me the video my grandfather had sent to all packs as a show of what would happen if you messed with ours. Jax would be sent out to hunt you down and do the same to you. I’d watched the video and been shocked, horrified. Slowly I’d come to terms with it. We always heard the rumours growing up that he was a psycho or he killed people. I saw in that video that he enjoyed what he did, it wasn’t a job or a punishment, he did it for fun. I’d learned later on that he didn’t hurt innocent people, he only went after the worst of humankind and the supernaturals, those who deserved it. Looking at him, I asked, “where’s Dad?” “Which one? There’s f.ucking thirty of us.” I snorted a laugh. There was a lot of dads, he wasn’t wrong, dramatic in the number but not wrong. There was himself, my biological father Fenris, Romulus, and Nick. “Romulus,” I said. “Still doing a class, should be back soon. Why?” “Nothing, I just need to talk to him.” The last thing I was doing was snitching about Elena to Jax. She was a b.itch but I wasn’t that cruel. For all I knew, he might decide to skin her alive. Anita was his biological daughter, after all, and if I was overprotective, it was nothing compared to how he was with her. No one else was even allowed to bathe her, just Mum, which made sense, especially when Anita hit her teen years, but there had been times he had lost his s.hit to the point he had to be taken to the cage, so no, I wasn’t telling him. I went to the kitchen and waited for Romulus, eating snacks while I did. About an hour passed by when he finally walked through the door looking a sweaty mess. He was wearing black sweatpants and a loose white vest top that was drenched in sweat and probably had all the females swooning and drooling over him, especially when it clung to his muscular body like it was now. Damn, maybe I should join his classes, build up more muscle for myself, and learn to fight at the same time. I wouldn’t mind having girls drooling over me like they all did my dads.’ I had Krystal, and I was happy with her, but that didn’t mean I wouldn’t mind being checked out. I wouldn’t do anything to encourage anything. Mum had drummed it into me to always respect girls and treat them right, and it stuck with me. I would never cheat on or intentionally hurt Krystal. I wasn’t sure how long we could last, though. she was human, and werewolves weren’t allowed to date humans for obvious reasons, but I didn’t want to break up with her, I didn’t want to lose her. “I need to talk to you,” I said to Romulus. Dropping his keys on the side, he looked over at me. “Alright, mate, let me shower and get changed, and I’ll be back.” I nodded, and he went upstairs to shower. I was drumming my fingers on the table while I waited, leaning my chin in my other hand when I heard crying. Sighing, I tried not to listen, but I was bored, and wolf hearing meant you couldn’t really drown things out unless you had earplugs, and even then, it only dulled the noise to human hearing. Linda was crying, and I heard Nick say in that cold and cruel voice he had. “You’re always f.ucking crying. Grow up, Linda.” I heard something hit the wall and knew she’d thrown something at him. She came down the stairs, and I tried not to stare at her face. The entire left side of her face was covered in badly burned scars, her eye looked kind of a milky colour, she’d been really badly t.ortured by some sickos, I didn’t know the details, but I knew she was super self conscious about the injuries. “Oh, hello, Lucas,” she smiled when she saw me. “Hey,” I gave a lazy wave and continued drumming my fingers. Nick came in, and I rolled my eyes when I realised what they were arguing about. “Linda, all I said was to wear your glasses, I don’t understand why you’re crying,” Nick said. “It’s the way you say it, Nick, you talk so coldly, and calling me stupid isn’t nice either.” “Fine, I’m sorry,” he said and tried to move closer, but she stepped back and said, “no you’re not.” Thank God Romulus came into the room. I got up and made him follow me to somewhere more private. “What’s up?” He asked. “Can you talk to Elena?” “About what?” He frowned. “How she treats Anita, she’s horrible to her and acts embarrassed in public. Anita wanted to hang out with her and her friends at break, but Elena told her to leave her alone, and then she let her boyfriend push Anita. She fell to the floor, and Elena didn’t even care.” It wasn’t often Romulus got angry, but he looked p.issed and said, “yeah, I’ll deal with her, don’t worry, thanks for telling me.” Nodding, I left to go up to my room and call Krystal.
