“Are you and Dila safe?” It was the first thing that Dominic asked me after I called him to tell him about my encounter with Ruis and that the town leaders were ready and willing to cooperate.
I was dumbfounded, not by his question but by the tone that he used. I don’t think I’ve ever heard so much worry in his voice before. It was both surprising and fascinating. The old me would have been over the moon hearing him worry about me like this. It would give me hope, more than I should put on.
This was actually the first time I’ve called him first over the phone. I was still reluctant but chose to follow Callista’s advice because she was also right about it. I’m still skeptical and don’t think I could forgive myself if something ever happened, and Dominic blames me for not telling him
