News about us spread like wildfire throughout San Lorenzo High. Students were shocked to see the school’s most feared and popular boy walking around holding hands with the quiet, once-outcast transferee. Some were happy for us, admiring how we had overcome everything together. But there were also many who doubted us, whispering that our relationship wouldn’t last, or that I was just using Elias for status.
I would often hear comments like:
“He only likes her out of pity, right?”
“They used to be enemies. How can they suddenly be in love?”
“She’s so lucky, but I bet she’ll mess it up soon enough.”
Hearing those words still hurt, but this time I didn’t feel alone. Whenever I looked at Elias, he would squeeze my hand tighter or give me a reassuring smile, letting me know that none of it mattered.
“Let them talk,” he would tell me whenever I felt down. “They don’t know what we’ve been through. As long as we trust each other, nothing else matters.”
And true enough, he showed me every single day how serious he was about us. He was sweet, caring, and always put my needs before his own. He would bring me my favorite snacks, walk me home after school, and even helped me join the school’s Arts Club, knowing how much I loved writing and drawing.
But while things were going well for us, Kian and Trina were still lurking in the shadows, waiting for their chance to strike again. They had been quiet ever since their schemes were exposed, but we both knew that it was only a matter of time before they tried something new.
Their opportunity came during the school’s annual Cultural Festival, the biggest event of the year. Each class had to prepare a performance, and our section was assigned to stage a romantic play. Since Elias was popular and had great stage presence, he was immediately chosen as the male lead. And to everyone’s surprise, including mine, our adviser assigned me as his leading lady.
“I know you two have been through a lot,” Ms. Cruz said with a smile. “But I believe you are the perfect pair for this role. You already have the chemistry and connection that actors take years to build.”
I was nervous at first. I had never performed in front of a big crowd before, and the thought of acting love scenes with Elias made my heart race. But Elias was excited, seeing it as another chance to be close to me.
“Don’t worry,” he whispered to me after the meeting. “I’ll guide you every step of the way. And besides… it won’t just be acting for me. Everything I say and do on stage will be true.”
His words made me blush, and I found myself looking forward to the rehearsals.
But during one of our practice sessions, Kian approached us. He had managed to stay in good standing with the school despite what happened, acting as if he had also been fooled by Trina’s lies.
“Hey,” he said casually, standing near the stage. “I heard you two are the leads. That’s great. But I just wanted to warn you… there are people who still don’t accept your relationship. They might try to ruin the performance just to make you look bad.”
Elias immediately stepped in front of me, his expression cold. “Is that so? And why would you tell us that? Are you planning something again?”
Kian raised his hands in surrender, putting on an innocent look. “I’m just being a concerned classmate. After all, we used to be friends, Elias. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you. Or to Lila.”
He looked at me briefly, and I could see the malice hidden behind his eyes. “Just be careful. You never know what could happen backstage.”
He walked away leaving us both feeling uneasy. Elias held my hand tightly. “Don’t listen to him. He’s just trying to scare us. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
But as the day of the festival arrived, strange things started happening again.
First, my costume went missing. Then, the script pages for my lines were torn and scattered. Just before the performance, someone even cut the wires to the microphone we were supposed to use.
Elias was furious, but he kept his composure. He helped me look for solutions, and we managed to find replacements just in time.
When we finally stepped onto the stage, the whole auditorium was filled with students, teachers, and parents. The lights were bright, and for a moment I felt overwhelmed. But when I looked at Elias standing beside me, all my nervousness disappeared.
“Ready?” he asked softly, smiling only at me.
I nodded, smiling back. “Ready.”
The play went smoothly at first. We acted out our lines perfectly, and the audience was captivated by our performance. But during the most important scene—the confession scene where the lead character declares his love—something unexpected happened.
Just as Elias was about to speak his lines, Trina suddenly walked onto the stage from the side. She was wearing a beautiful gown, looking like the main character herself. She walked straight toward Elias, took his hand, and looked at me with a triumphant smile.
“Elias,” she said loudly, so everyone could hear. “Why are you pretending to love her? You know you belong with me. We’ve known each other since we were kids. We’re from the same world. She’s just an outsider who doesn’t belong here.”
The whole audience gasped and started murmuring loudly. I felt my chest tighten, and I looked at Elias, waiting to see what he would do. My heart was pounding, afraid that her words would affect him.
But Elias immediately pulled his hand away, his expression filled with disgust. He stepped back and stood right next to me, wrapping his arm protectively around my waist.
“Are you done?” he asked coldly, looking at Trina. “Because what you just said is nothing but lies. You’re the one who doesn’t belong here. You belong in a world full of lies and tricks, while Lila belongs here—with me.”
He turned to face the audience, his voice clear and strong.
“Everyone here knows what happened in the past. I was blind and foolish, and I hurt the person who truly deserves to be loved. Lila came into my life and changed everything. She taught me what it means to be honest, kind, and genuine. She is not an outsider. She is the best thing that ever happened to me.”
He looked down at me, his eyes soft and full of love, completely ignoring the crowd and Trina who was standing there shocked and humiliated.
“And this part right here…” he said, holding both my hands. “This is not acting. Everything I feel is real. I love you, Lila Marquez. More than words can say. And nothing—nothing anyone says or does—will ever change that.”
The audience erupted into loud cheers and applause. Some even started shouting our names. I felt tears of happiness streaming down my face as I looked at the boy who had once been my worst enemy but was now my whole world.
“I love you too, Elias,” I whispered, loud enough for only him to hear.
Elias smiled and leaned down, placing a gentle kiss on my forehead, making the cheers grow even louder.
Trina stood there frozen, realizing that she had lost completely. She ran off the stage in tears, and later that day, she was called to the principal’s office for disrupting the event. As for Kian, he was nowhere to be seen—he knew that his plans had failed once again, and there was nothing more he could do to tear us apart.
After the performance, as we walked out of the school building hand in hand, the sun was setting, painting the sky in beautiful shades of orange and purple. It reminded me of the drawings Elias made for me, and how our story had started from pain but turned into something beautiful.
“Look,” Elias said, pointing toward the sky. “Just like your notebook pages. Filled with colors and stories.”
I leaned my head on his shoulder, feeling completely happy and safe. “Yes. And this is only the beginning. We still have so many pages left to write.”
Elias squeezed my hand gently. “And I’ll be right there with you, writing every single line.”
