Chapter 2

He was a hulking mass of flesh and even with the trench coat, I could see that he was muscular. The man took a step forward and I took two backwards. My eyes never left his, my brain a blank page. But the man walked past me, his gaze now on the figures before me. I slowly turned around, my eyes never leaving his figure. It was a m******e. The vampires all dived at him, claws and fangs bared. He made quick work of them. Limbs were torn, hearts were removed and he smashed their skulls into the ground. He finished them off by beheading them in one harsh jerk of his arm, blood splashing onto the ground and on the walls of the alleyway. I was frozen in fear and disbelief. I couldn’t even move when he walked past me again, his hands drenched in blood and some splatters of the deceased blood on his coat and face. The first vampire was trying to crawl away, his spine no doubt broken – and unfortunately for him, Low Level Vampires had slow regeneration. I watched as my savour grabbed up of my would-have-been assaulter’s head and he beheaded himself well. He released the severed head and it dropped onto the ground with a loud thud, blood trickling from it. I was too deep in shock to even have the urge to vomit. The man slowly turned to me and my heart skipped a beat. Was I going to be next? The gods seemed to be on my side because the only thing he asked me was, “Are you okay?” I didn’t reply, still in shock, and he outstretched a hand toward me. I scrambled back, my eyes wide. This seemed to draw a reaction from him as his browser furrowed. Suddenly, be grunted, going down on a knee as he clutched his stomach in pain. All reservations given to me by nature disappeared and I ran towards him. Before he could get on his second knee, I was already there and holding him up a little. When he removed his hand away from his stomach, I noticed the blood. With my mind made up, I made a choice. The rush of the morning hours woke me up and I slowly came into consciousness. I blinked tired and heavy eyes, groaning as I stood up from my bent over position. I rubbed my face before looking around, slowly becoming more aware. Then, I met the stare of golden eyes. My own eyes went wide and I suddenly remembered the events of the last hours. After being saved by the man – was he even human? With what I saw last night, I highly doubted it – laying on my bed with the duvet covering his naked lower body, I had decided to take the injured man to my apartment, half dragging the near unconscious individual to my home. It was pure luck that I didn’t meet others on the road, but then again with the spring of murders happening, no smart person would be outside when the time for curfew had hit. I had taken the elevator with him, and I pressed my thumb against the door, said door opening when my identity had been confirmed. I immediately took him to my bed and the moment his head hit the soft mattress, he was out. It was a difficult task removing his dirty attire, but I made due. What I saw made me gasp in horror. The man had so many injuries that I didn’t know where to start. He had what seemed to be claw marks on his stomach, as if someone or something tried to dig into his guts, and various cuts on his body. What worried me most was the injuries on his back where his arms were connected. One of them even had a big sliver rode still stuck in it and let’s just say that me pulling it out almost got me killed – thankfully, he wasn’t that far gone and just glared at me after he stopped screaming, then he fainted. It took two hours for me to wash him up with a cloth rag and liquid soap along with warm water, before cleaning up his injuries and bandaging them up. Let’s just say that my bed became a mess. I had him laying on his side, some of my pillows barricading him. He had developed a fever when I was done so after I took a shower, I started watching over him and laying a cool towel over his forehead. I must have slept off due to exhausting because it was daybreak right now. “Hello...” I greeted tentatively, a small smile on my face. “How are you feeling?” “...” The man kept on staring at me, but there was no malice in his eyes – only curiosity. “... were you the one who cleaned me up?” Holy s**t, his voice was sexy! I nodded. “Yes.” “Why? I’m practically a stranger to you, and after what you saw yesterday, you should be frightened.” I chuckled a little. “Oh, I’m frightened alright. Its not everyday you witness murder of such brutal proportions. But then again, you did save me from getting...” I trailed off, unable to say what I knew my fate was going to be yesterday. “It would be a disservice to leave you like that, after the help you provided for me.”“... i see...” He trailed off, still giving me a confused look, as if he wasn’t expecting my kindness. “You have my gratitude.” I beamed at him. “Let me get you something to eat. You must be starving.” He gave a hesitant nod and I walked out of the room to get some food ready. I prepared a quick breakfast that would be best suited for an injured person. As I did so, I called up my boss, letting him know that I had a run in with some Vampires and I managed to escape with the help of an unknown individual, taking my time to sooth his worries and accept his apologies of being the one to put me in that situation. He gave me the day off and I thanked him. It took me thirty minutes to prepare a large breakfast for my guest and I carried a tray loaded with a plate of food, water, orange juice and a bottle of pain killers over to the man in my room and presented it to him. He thanked me once again and I watched as he age the food with his face pinched with pain as he moved, and when he took the painkillers, he almost emptied it. I was worried at first but j took into consideration that my guest might jot be human, so human painkillers won’t have the desired effect if taken the regular amount. I took the dishes back to the kitchen and got some few snacks from the pantry. When I presented the energy bars to him, he gave a small smile of gratitude. “So, how much will you take as payment for the help you gave to me?” My guest blinked, stating at me in confusion. “What?” He grunted in that deep and sexy voice of his. “Money. Id like to pay you for your help last night.” “I don’t need your money.” He snapped, making me reel back a little. “Apologies for my outburst, but please, you’ve already done enough.” “I... I see...” It honestly left a bad taste to my mouth that my offer of payment was being rejected. Honestly, i had more than enough for being a top class Blood Seller for the National Vampire Blood Bank, so money was nothing to me. I didn’t let up and instead said; “If you don’t like taking monetary payment, what would you like in return? I’d do the best in my power to provide it.”
